Introduction: Peripheral neurotoxicity and neuropathic pain are well-known complications of several anti-cancer chemotherapeutic agents. Such pain might cause an impairment of the patient's quality of life and is a common limiting factor of anti-cancer chemotherapy. Neurotoxicity in orofacial structures has been previously described as diffuse jaw pain or numbness.

Dendritic cells (DCs) play a critical role in CD8(+) T cell priming following DNA vaccination. In contrast to other DNA injection routes or immunization with viral vectors, Ag presentation is delayed following needle injection of plasmid DNA into the skin. The contribution of various skin DC subsets to this process is not known.

[Dentinal hypersensitivity].

Refuat Hapeh Vehashinayim (1993)

January 2010

Dept. of Oral Rehabilitation, The Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel.

Dentinal hypersensitivity is defined as short and transient painful response of exposed dentin, usually cervical, to different stimuli, such as thermal, mechanical osmotic or chemical. The etiology of dentinal hypersensitivity is open tubules (because of enamel loss or gingival recession), allowing painful stimulus to reach the pulp. The hydrodynamic theory explains the mechanism through which pain is aroused.

Article Synopsis
  • The study challenges the idea that dental treatment should be delayed for 6-12 months after a stroke, suggesting that dental care is crucial and may outweigh the risks.
  • Two groups were compared: patients who had a cerebrovascular event within the last year and those with cardiovascular disease, both receiving necessary dental treatments.
  • Results showed that dental procedures were carried out safely with no complications in either group, indicating that dental care can be safely managed shortly after a stroke with proper medical oversight.

Aim: The purpose of the current study was to assess whether an unsweetened ice-popsicle imparts a positive feeling to children after dental treatment in which local anaesthesia is administered, and whether it reduces the tendency of children to self-mutilate (bite the lip, cheek or tongue) after the administration of local anaesthesia.

Design: Crossover study of 31 children aged 4-11 years old who needed similar dental treatments on both sides of the mandible or maxilla under local anaesthesia. At the end of each appointment the child received a toy or an ice-popsicle especially made for this study.

Although skin dendritic cells (DCs) have been shown to directly present Ag to CD8(+) T cells after intradermal immunization with lentivectors, the contribution of the different skin DC subsets to this process remains unclear. Using langerin-diphtheria toxin receptor transgenic mice we demonstrated that ablation of langerhans cells and langerin-expressing positive dermal DCs (Ln(+)dDCs) did not interfere with the generation of CD8(+) T cells by lentiviral vectors. Consistent with these findings, the absence of langerhans cells and Ln(+)dDCs did not hamper the presentation level of lentiviral-derived Ag by skin DCs in vitro.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess parents' perceptions of aesthetic defects in their children's maxillary primary incisors and how these views related to demographic factors and treatment choices.
  • In the analysis, 73% of parents with children showing aesthetic defects recognized a problem, compared to only 17% in the control group, with many advocating for dental treatment despite low success odds.
  • The findings indicated a preference for conservative treatment to preserve damaged teeth, while parents were less inclined to consider prosthetic replacements for lost incisors.

  • High lip cancer rates have been observed among Israelis over the past 40 years, but detailed epidemiological data has been lacking.
  • The study analyzed lip cancer incidence, trends, and demographic factors from 1970-2006 using data from the Israel National Cancer Registry, revealing that most cases were among men, older adults, and individuals with lighter skin tones.
  • The findings indicate that squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type, particularly on the external lower lip, with suggestions that sun exposure is a significant risk factor, highlighting the need for further investigation into public awareness and occupational effects related to sun exposure.

Oral amyloidosis is usually presented in the tongue and is often associated with multiple myeloma. We present three patients with unusual oral manifestations of primary amyloidosis, which to the best of our knowledge have not been previously published. In two cases the oral manifestation was overt at the time of diagnosis and all cases ended in patient mortality.

  • Oral cancer varies by subtype and location, with different causes and survival rates; squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common among older men, while lymphoma and sarcoma are most prevalent in those under 20.
  • Data from the Israel National Cancer Registry (1970-2006) reveals that the lips have the highest survival rate, whereas the tongue and gums have the lowest.
  • Early detection is key for improved survival, and routine oral examinations should be performed, especially for high-risk individuals and areas.

Objectives: To examine the association between psychological distress (PD) and perception of oral health status among a group of Ethiopian immigrants compared to the 'gold standard' of clinical diagnosis.

Design: Three hundred and forty Ethiopian immigrants, aged 18 years or more, were interviewed using a version of the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (World Health Organization) for the assessment of psychological status and perceived dental and periodontal health status. Clinical data for dental and periodontal health status were used as the 'gold standard' against the self-perceived assessment scores among the PD and no psychological distress (NPD) groups.

MyD88 is an adaptor molecule that functions in the innate signaling induced by proinflammatory adjuvants that interact with TLRs. Mice lacking MyD88, for example, resist active experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) induced by immunization with an encephalitogenic myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) peptide in CFA. We reasoned that MyD88(-/-) mice, nevertheless, should be susceptible to EAE mediated by adoptive transfer of activated encephalitogenic T cell lines, which do not require adjuvant signaling for their effector functions.

Proteolysis is a common microbial virulence mechanism that enables the destruction of host tissue and evasion from host defense mechanisms. Antimicrobial peptides, also known as host defense peptides, are effector molecules of the innate immunity that demonstrate a broad range of antimicrobial and immunoregulatory activities. Deficiency of the human LL-37 antimicrobial peptide was previously correlated with severe periodontal disease.

The influence of handheld mobile phones on human parotid gland secretion.

Oral Dis

March 2010

Salivary Gland Clinic, Department of Oral Medicine, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel.

Background: Handheld mobile phones (MPHs) have become a 'cultural' accessory device, no less so than a wrist watch. Nevertheless, the use of MPHs has given rise to great concern because of possible adverse health effects from exposure to the radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emitted by the device. Previous studies suggested correlation between MPH and salivary gland tumors.
