The modern global food system is highly unsustainable, shaped by industrialisation and corporate consolidation, with negative repercussions on the environment and biodiversity as well as human health. This paper looks at the burgeoning economy in neglected and underutilised species (NUS) in the Western Cape, South Africa, as a potential innovation that could make the local food system more socially and ecologically resilient. Although, at present, NUS are only marginally included in the local food system and policy discussions, NUS increasingly appear in the high-end food industry, driven by international gastronomic trends.

The preparation of highly active, rare earth, non-platinum-based catalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) in alkaline solutions would be useful in realizing green hydrogen production technology. Perovskite oxides are generally regarded as low-active HER catalysts, owing to their unsuitable hydrogen adsorption and water dissociation. In this article, we report on the synthesis of LiZrO perovskites substituted with samarium and terbium cations at A-sites for the HER.

Learning about how to evaluate implementation-focused networks is important as they become more commonly used. This research evaluated the emergence, legitimacy and effectiveness of a multi-country Quality of Care Network (QCN) aiming to improve maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) outcomes. We examined the QCN global level, national and local level interfaces in four case study countries.

The availability of clinical trial data, advocacy, and increased funding has facilitated the implementation of pharmacometrics in Africa, resulting in the establishment of additional training programs for pharmacometricians. This study conducted a systematic review to evaluate the progress made from the implementation of pharmacometrics in clinical drug development and its adoption into drug approval by regulatory authorities in Africa. We performed a comprehensive literature search using major databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar.

Artificial Intelligence is transforming drug discovery, particularly in the hit identification phase of therapeutic compounds. One tool that has been instrumental in this transformation is Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) analysis. This computer-aided drug design tool uses machine learning to predict the biological activity of new compounds based on the numerical representation of chemical structures against various biological targets.

Background: Naringenin has shown great promise in the realm of cancer therapeutics, demonstrating excellent cytotoxic action toward cancer cells and the enhanced effects of radiation therapy . However, the medicinal value of naringenin is severely limited clinically by poor bioavailability. Thus, multiple drug-delivery strategies for overcoming this limitation have been developed, of which liposomes are considered the most suitable due to their amphiphilic, modifiable, and biocompatible characteristics.

Polymer modification has been established as a cost-effective, simple, in situ method for overcoming some of the inherent disadvantages of boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes, and its application has been extended to reliable, low-cost environmental monitoring solutions. The present review focuses on modifying BDD electrodes with semi-conductive polymers acting as redox mediators. This article reports on the development of a 3-methyl thiophene-modified boron-doped diamond (BDD/P3MT) sensor for the electrochemical determination of total phenolic compounds (TPCs) in tea samples, using gallic acid (GA) as a marker.

Bioethanol is one of the most important bio-resources produced from biomass fermentation and is an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil-based fuels as it is regarded as renewable and clean. Bioethanol and its derivatives are used as feedstocks in petrochemical processes as well as fuel and fuel additives in motor vehicles to compensate for the depletion of fossil fuels. This review chronicles the recent developments in the catalytic conversion of ethanol to diethyl ether, ethylene, propylene, long-chain hydrocarbons, and other important products.

Digital health technology interventions have shown promise in enhancing self-management practices among adolescents living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (ALHIV). The objective of this scoping review was to identify the preferences of ALHIV in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) concerning the use of digital health technology for the self-management of their chronic illness. Electronic databases, including PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) (Plus with Full Text), Central (Cochrane Library), Epistemonikos, and Medline (EbscoHost), were searched.

Aim: The aim is to determine the use, ethical practice and sharing of dental photography on social media among qualified and undergraduate oral health practitioners at a dental school in South Africa.
Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used on staff and students at the University of the Western Cape's Dental Faculty in 2022.
Statistics indicate a high prevalence of TBI in South Africa, with many individuals with TBI not returning to work. The lack of return to work among TBI survivors is particularly due to factors such as injury severity, preinjury educational and occupational status, and age at injury. However, in addition to the above factors, there was the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the de-escalation of nonessential outpatient services in order to assist with curbing the spread of the virus.

BACE-1 plays a pivotal role in the production of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides, implicated in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathology. We previously described edaravone N-benzyl pyridinium derivatives (EBPDs) that exhibited multifunctional activity against multiple AD targets. In this study we explored the EBPDs BACE-1 inhibitory activity to potentially enhance the compounds therapeutic profile.

Background: Sustained implementation of facility-level quality improvement (QI) processes, such as plan-do-study-act cycles, requires enabling meso-level environments and supportive macro-level policies and strategies. Although this is well recognised, there is little systematic empirical evidence on roles and capacities, especially at the immediate meso-level of the system, that sustain QI strategies at the frontline.
Methods: In this paper we report on qualitative research to characterize the elements of a quality and outcome-oriented meso-level, focused on sub/district health systems (DHSs), conducted within a multi-level initiative to improve maternal-newborn health (MNH) in three provinces of South Africa.
