Background And Objective: Leptospirosis is a disease caused by pathogenic prevalent in tropical countries like the Philippines. Some studies have shown that the role of currently used antibiotics for leptospirosis is unclear since trials have found no significant benefit to patient outcomes compared to placebo. This signals the need for alternative therapies, such as herbal medicines, which may provide effective therapeutic regimens in treating this infection.

Sodium metabisulfite is widely used as a preservative in many food and beverage products, yet its potential effects on cognitive and motor functions at low concentrations remain poorly understood. Evaluating learning, short-term memory, and motor activity is essential, as these functions are critical indicators of neurological health and could be impacted by low-level exposure to sodium metabisulfite. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sublethal concentrations of sodium metabisulfite on cognitive and motor functions using (fruit flies) as the model organism.

Introduction: Evolving human-wildlife interactions have contributed to emerging zoonoses outbreaks, and pandemic prevention policy for wildlife management and conservation requires enhanced consideration from this perspective. However, the risk of unintended consequences is high. In this study, we aimed to assess how unrecognised complexity and system adaptation can lead to policy failure, and how these dynamics may impact zoonotic spillover risk and food system outcomes.

African swine fever (ASF), caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV), is a highly contagious disease with devastating effects on the global pig industry. This warrants the development of effective control strategies, such as vaccines. However, previously developed inactivated vaccines have proven ineffective, while live-attenuated vaccines carry inherent safety risks.

Background: Diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis for surveillance relies on microscopic detection of ova in Kato-Katz (KK) prepared slides. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based platforms for parasitic eggs may be developed using a robust image set with defined labels by reference microscopists. This study aimed to determine interobserver variability among reference microscopists in identifying parasite ova.

As a putative lung specific oncogene, the transducin-like enhancer of split 1 (TLE1) corepressor drives an anti-apoptotic and pro-epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) gene transcriptional programs in human lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) cells, thereby promoting anoikis resistance and tumor aggressiveness. Through its survival- and EMT-promoting gene regulatory programs, TLE1 may impact drug sensitivity and resistance in lung cancer cells. In the present study, a novel function of TLE1 was uncovered as an inhibitor of the antitumor effects of the epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) gefitinib in the human LUAD cell line A549, which exhibits moderate sensitivity to EGFR-TKI.

Axial Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the spine associated with the gene HLA-B27. Non-radiographic spondyloarthritis (nr-SpA), an early stage of axial SpA often goes unrecognized in many settings including the Philippines. We describe five Filipinos from a tertiary health care facility who fulfill the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) 2009 criteria for non-radiographic SpA with the aim of increasing awareness of this disease in the Philippines.

Background And Objective: There is no strict by-the-book rule as to which approach is the best strabismus surgery for patients with sensory exotropia. More commonly, a monocular lateral rectus recession and a medial rectus resection (monocular R & R; MRR) is performed in the eye with a poorer prognosis. Rarely, for larger deviations, a third or fourth horizontal muscle in the better eye is added.
