The prevalence of allergic diseases is increasing globally, most particularly in middle- to low-income countries. This article examines the burden of allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria in the Asia-Pacific region, unmet clinical needs, and the potential role of bilastine in the management of these conditions. An International Advisory Group meeting was convened in association with the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology Annual Congress in November 2014, followed by a literature review, and consensus-based outcomes from the meeting and literature review are described.

Background: In recent years, use of prosthetic material for inguinal hernia repair has increased dramatically. Tension-free repairs have gained popularity not only for recurrent or complicated hernias, but for primary hernia repairs as well. Although routine use of prophylactic antibiotics is not recommended in the Philippines for open nonimplant herniorrhaphy, there is little direct clinical evidence on which to base recommendations when implantable mesh is used.

Background: Planned relaparotomies have generated renewed interest because of the high mortality rates associated with conventional management techniques in severe intraabdominal sepsis. The use of abdominal zippers for temporary abdominal closure was devised to facilitate repeated explorations, allowing daily cleansing of the peritoneal cavity and the detection and management of septic complications.

Methods: In our institution, eight patients were managed in a 4-year period, using abdominal zippers for peripancreatic sepsis.
