Department of Pharmacy Practice, Thomas J Long School of Pharmacy, University of The Pacific Stockton, CA, USA.

Objective: Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) and ranolazine are approved treatments for patients with chronic stable angina by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Whether EECP offers clinical benefits regardless of underlying ranolazine therapy needs further investigation.

Methods: This was a retrospective evaluation of patients referred to a specialized EECP center.

Cities are rapidly expanding, and global warming is intensified in urban environments due to the urban heat island effect. Therefore, urban animals may be particularly susceptible to warming associated with ongoing climate change. We used a comparative and manipulative approach to test three related hypotheses about the determinants of heat tolerance or critical thermal maximum ( ) in urban ants-specifically, that (a) body size, (b) hydration status, and (c) chosen microenvironments influence .

A fundamental knowledge of microbial community structure in petroleum reservoirs can improve predictive modeling of these environments. We used hydrocarbon profiles, stable isotopes, and high-density DNA microarray analysis to characterize microbial communities in produced water from four Alaskan North Slope hydrocarbon reservoirs. Produced fluids from Schrader Bluff (24-27°C), Kuparuk (47-70°C), Sag River (80°C), and Ivishak (80-83°C) reservoirs were collected, with paired soured/non-soured wells sampled from Kuparuk and Ivishak.

The methylotrophic yeast, Pichia pastoris, has been genetically engineered to produce many heterologous proteins for industrial and research purposes. In order to secrete proteins for easier purification from the extracellular medium, the coding sequence of recombinant proteins is initially fused to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae α-mating factor secretion signal leader. Extensive site-directed mutagenesis of the prepro-region of the α-mating factor secretion signal sequence was performed in order to determine the effects of various deletions and substitutions on expression.

Medication use among elderly patients in ambulatory care, home health care, and long-term care settings has become increasingly complicated during the past decade. Home intravenous therapy, multiple drug regimens to treat multiple chronic diseases, increased acuity of nonhospitalized patients, and increased longevity have placed elderly patients at increased risk for drug-related problems.
