Harnessing antimicrobial peptides in endodontics.

Int Endod J

July 2024

Applied Oral Sciences and Community Dental Care, Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong S.A.R., China.

Endodontic therapy includes various procedures such as vital pulp therapy, root canal treatment and retreatment, surgical endodontic treatment and regenerative endodontic procedures. Disinfection and tissue repair are crucial for the success of these therapies, necessitating the development of therapeutics that can effectively target microbiota, eliminate biofilms, modulate inflammation and promote tissue repair. However, no current endodontic agents can achieve these goals.

Introduction: Just under half of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) also have gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). These conditions appear to be inter-related and continual positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, the gold standard treatment for OSA to prevent airway collapse, has been shown to reduce GORD. As the impact of mandibular advancement devices, a second-line therapy for OSA, on GORD has yet to be investigated, a feasibility study is needed prior to a definitive trial.

Executive Associate Dean and Professor, University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, San Francisco, California.

Infection prevention and control (IPC) is an essential part of every encounter with patients in a healthcare setting, including oral healthcare. To ensure best practices are being followed, dental healthcare personnel (DHCP) should be familiar with several guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including the Core Infection Prevention and Control Practices. The core practices represent the foundation upon which all other IPC protocols are built.

Statement Of Problem: A hemi-engaging abutment design has been suggested to improve the stability of the implant-to-abutment interface compared with that of a fully nonengaging design to restore implant-supported fixed partial denture. However, controversy persists regarding the benefit of using a hemi-engaging abutment design and prompts the need for specific mechanical testing on the effect of these designs on screw preload under simulated clinical conditions.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine whether significant differences in preload values of the screw before and after cyclic loading exist between hemi-engaging and nonengaging abutment fixed partial denture designs.

Coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, have caused pandemics in the past two decades. The most prevalent SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern can re-infect individuals who have been previously infected with other variants or had protection from vaccines targeting the original SARS-CoV-2 variant. Given the high risk of transmission of coronavirus aerosols produced during dental procedures, it is important to understand the future risk of coronavirus infection for oral health professionals and to diagnose quickly early stages of outbreaks.

Clinical dental treatment is the most exacting and demanding medical procedure that persons with special needs undergo on a regular basis throughout their lifetime. Dental treatment is surgical in nature, usually requiring controlled placement of sharpened instrumentation in intimate proximity to the face, airway, and highly vascularized and inner aged oral tissues. Although approximately 90% of patients with special needs can and should be mainstreamed through any general dental practice, without significant behavioral guidance, techniques, or medical immobilization/protective stabilization, there has been a drastic shift toward pharmacologic management of these patients using various forms of sedation and general anesthesia.

Are teeth superior to implants? A mapping review.

J Prosthet Dent

August 2021

Professor, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, School of Medicine, Stanford University, Stanford, Calif.

Statement Of Problem: There is a long-held assumption that teeth are superior to implants because the periodontal ligament (PDL) confers a preeminent defense against biologic and mechanical challenges. However, adequate analysis of the literature is lacking. As a result, differential treatment planning of tooth- and implant-supported restorations has been compromised.
