First introduced over 20 years ago as a treatment for progressive keratoconus, the original "Dresden" corneal cross-linking (CXL) protocol involved riboflavin saturation of the stroma, followed by 30 min of 3 mW/cm-intensity ultraviolet-A (UV-A) irradiation. This procedure generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cross-link stromal molecules, thereby stiffening the cornea and counteracting the ectasia-induced weakening. Due to their large size, riboflavin molecules cannot readily pass through the corneal epithelial cell tight junctions; thus, epithelial debridement was performed.

Biochemical and neurophysiological effects of deficiency of the mitochondrial import protein TIMM50.

TIMM50, an essential TIM23 complex subunit, is suggested to facilitate the import of ~60% of the mitochondrial proteome. In this study, we characterized a disease-causing mutation in human fibroblasts and noted significant decreases in TIM23 core protein levels (TIMM50, TIMM17A/B, and TIMM23). Strikingly, TIMM50 deficiency had no impact on the steady-state levels of most of its putative substrates, suggesting that even low levels of a functional TIM23 complex are sufficient to maintain the majority of TIM23 complex-dependent mitochondrial proteome.

The functional diversity structure of a community can be represented as a combination of three additive components (species dominance D, functional redundancy R, and functional diversity Q) (DRQ approach in which different facets of functional differences between species are considered simultaneously). We applied this concept to assemblages of fleas and gamasid mites parasitic on small mammals at continental (across regions of the Palearctic) and regional (across sampling sites in Slovakia) scales and asked: What are the relative effects of host species, biome/habitat type, and geographic locality on the DRQ composition of a parasite assemblage? At the continental scale, regions were partitioned according to predominant biome or geographic position in a continental section. How do roses build failure-resistant anchoring tools?

Rose prickles are small-scale, plant-based anchoring tools of multifunctional biomechanical roles, combining physical defense against herbivores and growth support on surrounding objects. By employing multiscale structural observations, nanomechanical characterizations, and finite-element simulations, we unveil that the dog rose ( Linnaeus) prickle incorporates structural-mechanical modifications at different length scales, resulting in macroscopic stress-locking effects that provide the prickle extreme damage-resistant capabilities and secure its functional form against catastrophic failures. These functional design strategies, unique to plant-based biomechanical tools, may promote futuristic micro-engineered anchoring platforms for micro-robotics locomotion, biomedical microinjection, and micromechanical systems.
