Determining the thermal profile of ignition is important because the desired ignition behavior varies with the objective. For example, extended ignition prolongs the time that the engine runs; however, fast ignition offers a higher power gain. The pollution caused by undesirable chemical reactions, as determined by the ignition profile, is another important aspect.

Article Synopsis
  • PTSD is associated with changes in brain communication, specifically lower connectivity in the uncinate fasciculus and between the hippocampus and ventromedial prefrontal cortex.
  • Exposure-based therapy can reduce PTSD symptoms and alter resting-state functional connectivity, but how these changes relate to each other was previously unclear.
  • A study found that improvements in functional connectivity after therapy are linked to better structural connectivity and reduced PTSD symptoms over time.

Article Synopsis
  • The DSM's criteria for mental disorders allow for varied symptoms among individuals, but this has led to concerns about the reliability of these classifications in research due to inconsistent symptom combinations.
  • The study investigates how symptom definitions and assessments influence the likelihood of specific symptom combinations in disorders like PTSD, depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety.
  • Analyzing data from over 155,000 participants revealed that while some symptom combinations were more common, most had low probabilities of occurrence, indicating a skewed distribution in the way symptoms manifest across different individuals.

In the search for the origin of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis disease (ALS), we hypothesized earlier (Monselise, 2019) that D-amino acids produced by stressed microbiome may serve as inducers of the disease development. Many examples of D-amino acid accumulation under various stress conditions were demonstrated in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. In this work, wild-type Escherichia coli, members of the digestive system, were subjected to carbon and nitrogen starvation stress.

Role of Trapped Molecules at Sliding Contacts in Lattice-Resolved Friction.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

August 2024

Scientific Computing Laboratory, Center for the Study of Complex Systems, Institute of Physics Belgrade, University of Belgrade, Pregrevica 118, Belgrade 11080, Serbia.

Understanding atomic friction within a liquid environment is crucial for engineering friction mechanisms and characterizing surfaces. It has been suggested that the lattice resolution of friction force microscope in liquid environments stems from a dry contact state, with all liquid molecules expelled from the area of closest approach between the tip and substrate. Here, we revisit this assertion by performing in-depth friction force microscopy experiments and molecular dynamics simulations of the influence of surrounding water molecules on the dynamic behavior of the nanotribological contact between an amorphous SiO probe and a monolayer MoS substrate.

Hebrew University Business School, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem 9190501, Israel.

In the pursuit of mental and physical health, effective pain management stands as a cornerstone. Here, we examine a potential sex bias in pain management. Leveraging insights from psychological research showing that females' pain is stereotypically judged as less intense than males' pain, we hypothesize that there may be tangible differences in pain management decisions based on patients' sex.

Article Synopsis
  • Current estimates of genetic variants linked to Parkinson's disease (PD) show limitations and biases across different populations, complicating patient recruitment for clinical trials focused on genetic therapies.
  • The Rostock Parkinson's disease (ROPAD) study analyzes data from 12,580 PD patients across 16 countries, revealing that 14.8% had a genetic test positive for PD-related variants, particularly in specific genes like GBA1 and LRRK2.
  • Findings indicate higher positivity rates in patients with earlier onset (age ≤ 50) or a positive family history, emphasizing the need for more extensive genetic investigation to improve patient stratification for future clinical trials.

Different substrates pose varied biomechanical challenges that select specific morphologies, such as long limbs for faster running and short limbs for balanced posture while climbing narrow substrates. We tested how gecko locomotion is affected by the microhabitat they occupy and by a key adaptation-adhesive toepads-through analyzing how those are related to limb morphology. We collected microhabitat and toepads data for over 90% of limbed gecko species, and limb measurements for 403 species from 83 of the 121 limbed gecko genera, which we then used in phylogenetic comparative analyses.
