Previous psycholinguistic findings showed that linguistic framing - such as the use of passive voice - influences the level of agency attributed to other people. To investigate whether passive voice use relates to people's personal sense of agency, we conducted three studies in which we analyzed existing experimental and observational data. In Study 1 (N = 835) we show that sense of personal agency, operationalized between participants as recalling instances of having more or less power over others, affects the use of agentive language.

Article Synopsis
  • - Surgical decompression is typically recommended for treating nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas (NFPMAs) that cause visual impairment and other symptoms, but even asymptomatic patients may face increased health issues if they opt for conservative treatment.
  • - A study of 55 patients who were conservatively treated for NFPMAs revealed that many developed new symptoms, including headaches, hypertension, and hypopituitarism, along with higher rates of emergency department visits.
  • - The findings indicate that early surgical intervention for NFPMAs could potentially reduce the risk of developing additional health problems and enhance overall well-being for these patients.

Many bacteria possess proteasomes and a tagging system that is functionally analogous to the ubiquitin system. In this system, Pup, the tagging protein, marks protein targets for proteasomal degradation. Despite the analogy to the ubiquitin system, where the ubiquitin tag is recycled, it remained unclear whether Pup is similarly recycled, given how the bacterial proteasome does not include a depupylase.

J Am Coll Cardiol

September 2024

INSERM U-1148, Université de Paris-Cité, Paris, France; Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris, France; FACT (French Alliance for Cardiovascular Trials), Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between triglyceride levels and the cardiovascular benefits of alirocumab compared to placebo in patients with recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) who are on statin therapy.
  • Results showed that higher baseline triglyceride levels were linked to an increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), whereas alirocumab significantly lowered LDL cholesterol and reduced MACE risk.
  • While alirocumab led to a notable decrease in triglycerides, the reduction did not correlate with a lower risk of MACE, suggesting baseline triglyceride levels are more important for cardiovascular risk than reductions achieved through treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Transistor-based biosensing (BioFET) is explored as a promising method for future medical diagnostics but faces challenges with solution gating, as standard measurements affect the equilibrium of double layers where biomolecules interact.
  • The study investigates a new BioFET design that separates the solution potential from the current gating process, allowing electrochemical equilibrium to be maintained while measuring biomolecule interactions.
  • Results show that this decoupled approach significantly improves sensing performance for detecting ferritin in diluted plasma, achieving high sensitivity and a wide dynamic range compared to traditional methods.
