Introduction: In recent years, fedratinib, a selective JAK2 inhibitor, has emerged as a potential therapeutic option for patients who have failed or are intolerant to ruxolitinib. Despite the promising results observed in clinical studies, real-world evidence from the USA and Europe suggests that the efficacy of fedratinib may be less conclusive. We report the characteristics, treatment patterns, and clinical outcomes of patients with myelofibrosis (MF) treated with fedratinib following ruxolitinib failure in Israel's clinical practice.

Importance: Stereotypical motor movements (SMMs) are a form of restricted and repetitive behavior, which is a core symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Current quantification of SMM severity is extremely limited, with studies relying on coarse and subjective caregiver reports or laborious manual annotation of short video recordings.

Objective: To assess the utility of a new open-source AI algorithm that can analyze extensive video recordings of children and automatically identify segments with heterogeneous SMMs, thereby enabling their direct and objective quantification.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent guidelines advocate for quick initiation of lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) to achieve significant reductions in LDL cholesterol levels.
  • A European study involving 286 ACS patients evaluated the effectiveness of two LLT strategies: high-intensity statin monotherapy (mono-HIS) and a combination of high-intensity statins with ezetimibe (combo-HIS).
  • Findings showed that while LDL-c targets were met in under half of the patients, combo-HIS was linked to a significantly greater reduction in LDL-c levels compared to mono-HIS, suggesting its potential for more effective management in post-ACS care.*

Intersectionality has become a central analytical framework in the study of exclusion and empowerment experiences among women from marginalized communities. However, the relevance of intersectionality to informal caregiving in mental healthcare has hardly been explored to date. The purpose of the current study is to examine the exclusion experiences and coping resources of immigrant women caring for a family member with a severe mental illness (SMI) through the lens of intersectionality theory.

A color-digit Stroop task shows numerical influence on numerosity processing.

Mem Cognit

September 2024

Department of Psychology and The Zelman Center for Brain Science, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel.

The numerical Stroop task involves presenting participants with two digits that differ in physical size and numerical value and asking them to report which digit had the larger size or value while ignoring the other dimension. Previous studies show that participants have difficulty ignoring the irrelevant dimension and thus have implications on the automaticity of numerical processing. The present study investigates the automatic influence of numerical value on numerosity processing in a novel Stroop-like task.

HIV-1 infection requires passage of the viral core through the nuclear pore of the cell, a process that depends on functions of the viral capsid. Recent studies have shown that HIV-1 cores enter the nucleus prior to capsid disassembly. Interactions of the viral capsid with the nuclear pore complex are necessary but not sufficient for nuclear entry, and the mechanism by which the viral core traverses the comparably sized nuclear pore is unknown.

Pathological crystallization within soft tissues often yields biominerals with properties differing from those of their geological or synthetic counterparts. Microcalcifications (MCs) are abundant in breast tumors, particularly in non-invasive lesions, such as ductal carcinoma (DCIS). Given the challenge of predicting DCIS progression into invasive cancer, it has been suggested that MCs can be leveraged to inform DCIS prognosis.

Terminal α1,2-fucosylation of glycosphingolipids by FUT1 is a key regulator in early cell-fate decisions.

EMBO Rep

October 2024

Avram and Stella Goren-Goldstein Department of Biotechnology Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Sciences, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, 8410501, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how glycosphingolipids (GSLs), specifically α1,2-fucosylated GSLs, influence the differentiation of human pluripotent cells (hPCs) during early embryogenesis.
  • Overexpression of these GSLs hinders hPC differentiation into mesodermal cells and cardiomyocytes, while their reduction enhances differentiation and responsiveness to external signals such as BMP4.
  • The research suggests that α1,2-fucosylated GSLs play a crucial role in regulating cell signaling pathways involved in early embryo development and cell fate decisions.

Correlates of protection for recent emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants have not been determined. In this test-negative case-control study, we report lower odds of infection with XBB variants among those boosted during the last six months. Additionally, we demonstrate that XBB-specific neutralizing antibodies are independent correlates of protection.

Performing joint analysis of gene expression datasets from different experiments can present challenges brought on by multiple factors-differences in equipment, protocols, climate etc. "Cross-study normalization" is a general term for transformations aimed at eliminating such effects, thus making datasets more comparable. However, joint analysis of datasets from different species is rarely done, and there are no dedicated normalization methods for such inter-species analysis.

Host populations often vary in the magnitude of coinfection they experience across environmental gradients. Furthermore, coinfection often occurs sequentially, with a second parasite infecting the host after the first has established a primary infection. Because the local environment and interactions between coinfecting parasites can both drive patterns of coinfection, it is important to disentangle the relative contributions of environmental factors and within-host interactions to patterns of coinfection.
