Changing environmental conditions and the need to reduce the environmental impact of food systems highlight the importance of analyzing the direct and indirect environmental impacts of agricultural production systems. This paper embraces a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach Using a cradle to farm gate framework to analyze a range of environmental interactions of almond production in three climatic regions - Mediterranean, semi-arid, and arid. Data was collected from 94 farmers across the state of Israel, representing 75 % of the country's almond orchard area.

The spinterface mechanism was suggested as a possible origin for the chirality-induced spin-selectivity (CISS) effect and was used to explain and reproduce, with remarkable accuracy, experimental data from transport experiments showing the CISS effect. Here, we apply the spinterface mechanism to explain the appearance of magnetization at the interface between nonmagnetic metals and chiral molecules, through the stabilization of otherwise fluctuating magnetic moments. We show that the stabilization of surface magnetic moments occurs for a wide range of realistic parameters and is robust against dephasing.

Sugar is the largest agricultural crop by mass and has seen a rapid increase in consumption around the world. There are widespread public health efforts to curb sugar intake through targeted policies given its association with noncommunicable diseases. Although curbing sugar intake aligns with sustainable diets that meet essential environmental and health targets, such a shift may be challenging from a political economy perspective.

Ketogenic diet (KD) is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate (CHO) diet, designed to induce a metabolic state of ketosis in which the body metabolizes primarily lipids for energy production. Various forms of KD are being promoted as promising treatments for numerous health conditions from chronic headaches to weight-loss and even different forms of cancer and are becoming increasingly more popular. KD appears to be an efficacious approach for weight-loss, and maintenance, improved glycemia, cognitive function and cancer prognosis.

Purpose: In this study, a comprehensive analysis of costs of chronic kidney disease (CKD) was performed, to understand factors associated with the economic burden of the disease in a multicentre international framework.
Methods: The impact on costs of demographics, socio-economics, clinical, and functional variables was tested in 2204 subjects aged 75 years or more attending outpatient clinics in Europe using a multicentre 2-year prospective cohort study. By means of collected resources consumption and unit cost data a comprehensive cost database was built and then investigated using multilevel regression modeling.

Natural products serve as a valuable resource in drug discovery and the identification of bioactive molecules in the field of epimedicine, which targets epigenetic regulator enzymes through epidrugs. In this study, β-1,3-glucan (BG), a natural storage polysaccharide in a well-known immunostimulatory agent, is propounded as a promising epidrug. To elucidate the therapeutic efficacy of BG against ovarian cancer, the molecular interactions between BG and epigenetic regulators, Protein Arginine Methyltransferases (PRMTs) and Sirtuins (SIRTs) were investigated using computational methods followed by gene expression studies in SKOV-3 ovarian cancer cell line.

Bile acids (BAs) undergo extensive microbial metabolism in the gut and exert hormone-like functions on physiological processes underlying metabolic risk. However, the extent to which gut BA profiles predict cardiometabolic risk and explain individual responses to dietary interventions in humans is still unclear. In the DIRECT-PLUS Trial, we conducted a multi-omics analysis of 284 participants randomized into three groups: healthy dietary guidelines and two Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) groups.

Background: Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) are associated with risks of device-related infections (DRI) impacting major adverse outcomes. Staphylococcus aureus (SA) is a leading cause of early pocket infection and bacteremia. While studies in other surgical contexts have suggested that nasal mupirocin treatment and chlorhexidine skin washing may reduce colonization and infection risk, limited data exist for CIED interventions.

Background: Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) with endocardial leads crossing the tricuspid valve can lead to or worsen tricuspid regurgitation (TR), causing substantial morbidity and mortality. Despite a recent randomized controlled study revealing a low short-term incidence of device-related TR (DRT) post-CIED implantation, uncertainties persist regarding the efficacy of intra-procedural 2-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography (2DTTE) in preventing long-term TR.
Objectives: To conduct a long-term follow-up study on patients with CIED implants based on a previous study conducted at our hospital.

The quest to understand and mimic proton translocation mechanisms in natural channels has driven the development of peptide-based artificial channels facilitating efficient proton transport across nanometric membranes. It is demonstrated here that hierarchical peptide self-assembly can form micrometers-long proton nanochannels. The fourfold symmetrical peptide design leverages intermolecular aromatic interactions to align self-assembled cyclic peptide nanotubes, creating hydrophilic nanochannels between them.

Background: Mass Casualty Incidents (MCIs) pose significant challenges for healthcare systems. While policies are typically crafted based on past experiences, the lessons learned from each incident play a crucial role in enhancing emergency preparedness. On October 7th, 2023, Israel came under the largest terror attack in its history.

Associating sensory stimuli with behavioral significance induces substantial changes in stimulus representations. Recent studies suggest that primary sensory cortices not only adjust representations of task-relevant stimuli, but actively participate in encoding features of the decision-making process. We sought to determine whether this trait is innate in sensory cortices or if choice representation develops with time and experience.

Introduction: Individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of thrombotic events and bleeding. Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), an effective antiplatelet agent, is one of the most frequently used medications for both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, it can also contribute to bleeding events due to its inherent antiplatelet effect.

Purpose: Given research inconsistency, this study aimed to assess whether attention control changes from pregnancy to postpartum, focusing on the moderating role of maternal objective and subjective sleep. Our second objective was to evaluate attention control's role in predicting psychological outcomes in peripartum women.
Method: A cohort of 224 pregnant women completed the Antisaccade task, a measure of attention control, during the third trimester and again four months post-delivery.

In this Perspective, the use of DNA nanotechnology is explored as a powerful tool for studying a family of enzymes known as topoisomerases. These enzymes regulate DNA topology within a living cell and play a major role in the pharmaceutical field, serving as anti-cancer and anti-bacterial targets. This Perspective will provide a short historical overview of the methods employed in studying these enzymes and emphasizing recent advancements in assays using DNA nanotechnology.

The growing demand for energy and the shift towards green energy solutions have led to the conversion of open spaces and agricultural fields into photovoltaic (PV) power plants, exacerbating the "food-energy-environment" trilemma. Agrophotovoltaics (APVs), a dual-use system combining agriculture and energy production on the same land, presents a potential solution to this challenge. While the environmental impacts of ground-mounted utility-scale PV (USPV) power plants and the effects of APV systems on agricultural yields have been extensively studied and reviewed, the implications for wildlife and biodiversity remain largely unexplored.

As one of the most efficacious glaucoma surgical techniques, trabeculectomy is considered by many surgeons to be the "gold standard" intra-ocular pressure (IOP)-reducing intervention. The purpose of this study is to present our intra-operative flow-adjusted surgical method, which aims to provide safety and efficacy more simply than previous methods. Retrospectively, we evaluated outcomes for trabeculectomy or phacotrabeculectomy in surgery-naïve eyes over three years for patients with glaucoma not associated with other ocular co-morbidities.
