Myelin oligodendrocyte antibody disease is a demyelinating disorder that usually presents with a monophasic course. Relapse in this demyelinating disorder is rare, and those who relapse have a weaker response to standard therapy. In this case report, we report a three-year follow-up on a case of a female patient who was diagnosed with myelin oligodendrocyte antibody disease at 21 years old.

Optimization of inpatient medication administration among persons with Parkinson's disease: recommendations on pharmacy technology and workflow.

Front Pharmacol

November 2023

Center for Neurological Restoration, Department of Neurology, Neurological Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, United States.

Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) are vulnerable during hospitalizations due to the underlying complexities o1f symptoms, and acute illness or medication changes often lead to decompensation. Complications during hospitalizations are often due to worsening motor and nonmotor symptoms and commonly result from inaccurate medication regimens. Although the accuracy of medication administration relies on an interplay of factors, including patient status, transitions of care, coordination between the hospital prescriber and outpatient neurologist, etc.

For adopting recently introduced hypertension phenotypes categorized using office and out of office blood pressure (BP) for the diagnosis of hypertension and antihypertension drug therapy, it is mandatory to define the corresponding out of office BP with the specific target BP recommended by the major guidelines. Such conditions include white-coat hypertension (WCH), masked hypertension (MH), white-coat uncontrolled hypertension (WUCH), and masked uncontrolled hypertension (MUCH). Here, the authors review the relevant literature and discuss the related issue to facilitate the use of corresponding BPs for proper diagnosis of WCH, MH, WUCH, and MUCH in the setting of standard target BP as well as intensive target BP.

The most prevalent kind of alopecia, androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male or female pattern hair loss, affects both men and women, with the frequency rising with advancing years. Even though practicing dermatologists and hair experts frequently encounter it, it might be one of the most challenging disorders to treat since choosing a course of action frequently requires a comprehensive analysis of several variables and moral judgment. Effectiveness, side effect profiles, practicability, promoting compliance, and treatment cost are the most important factors to take into account, especially given the chronic nature of androgenetic alopecia.

Home blood pressure-centered approach - from digital health to medical practice: HOPE Asia Network consensus statement 2023.

Hypertens Res

December 2023

Department of Hypertension, Centre for Epidemiological Studies and Clinical Trials, the Shanghai Institute of Hypertension, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Hypertension, Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Recent innovations in digital technology have enabled the simultaneous accumulation, and the linking and analysis of time-series big data relating to several factors that influence blood pressure (BP), including biological indicators, physical activity, and environmental information. Various approaches can be used to monitor BP: in the office/clinic; at home; 24-h ambulatory recording; or with wearable and cuffless devices. Of these, home BP monitoring is a reliable and convenient method, and is recommended for hypertension management by current national and international guidelines.

A new tool for evaluating health equity in academic journals; the Diversity Factor.

PLOS Glob Public Health

August 2023

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Laboratory for Computational Physiology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States of America.

Current methods to evaluate a journal's impact rely on the downstream citation mapping used to generate the Impact Factor. This approach is a fragile metric prone to being skewed by outlier values and does not speak to a researcher's contribution to furthering health outcomes for all populations. Therefore, we propose the implementation of a Diversity Factor to fulfill this need and supplement the current metrics.

  • The researchers analyzed 114 CRAO patients within a week of symptom onset, categorizing them based on whether they had an embolic source, and assessed their visual acuity after one month.
  • Results showed that 40.4% of patients experienced visual improvement, with those having an embolic source (CRAO-E) showing better outcomes and a higher likelihood of visual improvement compared to those without an embolic source.
