December 2024

Laboratory of Molecular Cell Biomedicine, Department of Biology, University of the Balearic Islands, Palma 07122, Spain. Electronic address:

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer´s (AD) and physiological ageing are characterized by a decline in neurogenesis and in the polysialylated isoforms of neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM) expression within the hippocampus and specifically in the dentate gyrus (DG). In the 3xTG-AD mouse model, which mimics the human disease in both pathological and behavioral features, this decline in PSA-NCAM is associated with the presence of Aβ plaques at 9 months and Tau tangles at 12-15 months. In this work we studied the presence of PSA-NCAM at early ages (1-6 months) in the same model.

Cereb Cortex

September 2024

Department of Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience, Central Institute of Mental Health, Medical Faculty Mannheim / Heidelberg University, J5, Mannheim 68159, Mannheim, Germany.

Definitions of human pain acknowledge at least two dimensions of pain, affective and sensory, described as separable and thus potentially differentially modifiable. Using electroencephalography, we investigated perceptual and neural changes of emotional pain modulation in healthy individuals. Painful electrical stimuli were applied after presentation of priming emotional pictures (negative, neutral, positive) and followed by pain intensity and unpleasantness ratings.

Article Synopsis
  • Vertical land movements can create differences between regional relative sea-level changes and climate-driven absolute sea-level changes, which are accurately tracked by satellite since 1992.
  • While vertical land motion is often modeled as a linear process, evidence suggests it can also be nonlinear due to factors like tectonic activity and groundwater extraction, leaving some uncertainties in sea-level rise projections.
  • The study estimates that vertical land motion may cause relative sea-level changes of up to 50 cm by 2150, and not accounting for its nonlinear nature could increase uncertainty in projections by up to 1 meter at a regional level, emphasizing the need to consider these factors in future assessments.

Unpredictable deviations from an otherwise regular auditory sequence, as well as rare sounds following a period of silence, are detected automatically. Recent evidence suggests that the latter also elicit quick involuntary modulations of ongoing motor activity emerging as early as 100 ms following sound onset, which was attributed to supramodal processing. We explored such force modulations for both rare and deviant sounds.
