Evidence of human exposure and associated risk factors to Rift Valley fever in selected districts of Central and Western Zambia.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an important viral zoonotic disease that not only affects ruminants but causes serious morbidity and mortality in humans. In humans, its symptoms range from mild flu-like signs to a severe form such as retinal damage, meningoencephalitis to haemorrhagic fever. In this study, 202 human serum samples were collected from central and western parts of Zambia and tested for RVF-specific antibodies using a commercially available ELISA kit.

Awareness and willingness to use pre-exposure prophylaxis among the University of Zambia students: A cross-sectional study.

Background And Aims: Despite a quick rollout of PrEP as a preventive method against Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections in Zambia, adolescent and young adult populations have remained very vulnerable to HIV infection. This study assessed the awareness and willingness to use PrEP among University of Zambia (UNZA) students.

Methods: Three hundred forty-six students participated in this cross-sectional study at UNZA between March and June 2021.

Background: Obesity-related cancers in the 16 Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries is quite prominent. The changes and time trends of the burden of obesity-related cancers in developing countries like SADC remain largely unknown. A descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted to assess the burden of obesity-related cancers, (liver, esophageal, breast, prostate, colon/rectal, leukemia, ovarian, uterine, pancreatic, kidney, gallbladder/biliary tract, and thyroid cancers) in SADC countries.

Fight against cholera outbreak, efforts and challenges in Malawi.

Cholera is endemic in many African countries with recurrent seasonal outbreaks in parts of the region. Malawi has been experiencing seasonal outbreaks of Cholera since 1998, and it is one of the major public health problems. The current cholera outbreak is one of Malawi's worst cholera outbreaks in the past 10 years.

Bloodstream infections (BSI) caused by antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Third-generation cephalosporins (3GCs) have been used as empiric treatment for BSI and other invasive infections for years; however, their overuse could promote the emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs). Thus, this study aimed to determine the epidemiological, clinical and microbiological features and the effects of antimicrobial resistance on the outcomes of BSIs at a referral hospital in Lusaka, Zambia.

Species dynamics in natural bacterial communities over multiple rounds of propagation.

Our experimental work illustrates how microbial ecosystems can be shaped by selective pressures over long-term ecological time scales. Natural microbial ecosystems generally consist of various co-existing species, where community composition describes the frequency at which species or types are present. Overall functionality of the system is achieved by interacting species.

Effect of agricultural diversification on dietary diversity in rural households with children under 5 years of age in Zambia.

Micronutrient deficiencies in low-income countries are associated with the monotonous consumption of nutrient-deficient crops, contributing to childhood stunting with far-reaching socioeconomic consequences. To promote nutrition sensitive agriculture, policy makers in such countries have embarked on policy initiatives that encourage agricultural diversification in smallholder farming systems. This paper investigates the link between agricultural diversification and two key indicators of food and nutrition security among children under 5 years in rural Zambia.

Background: High body mass index (BMI) is associated with stroke, ischemic heart disease (IHD), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). An epidemiological analysis of the prevalence of high BMI, stroke, IHD, and T2DM was conducted for 16 Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) using Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) Study data.

Methods: GBD obtained data from vital registration, verbal autopsy, and ICD codes.

This study sought to document health beliefs and health seeking behavior towards MMDP services for LF in Luangwa District, Zambia.

Drinking Water Quality and Provision in Six Low-Income, Peri-Urban Communities of Lusaka, Zambia.

Lusaka, Zambia, is a rapidly growing city located on a vulnerable karstic dolomite aquifer that provides most of the city's drinking water. Over 65% of residents live in peri-urban communities with inadequate sanitation leading to widespread groundwater contamination and the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera. To fill the water service gap, Water Trusts were created: public/private partnerships designed to provide clean water to peri-urban community residents.

Background People living with HIV (PLWH) are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, which persists despite effective plasma viral suppression on antiretroviral therapy. HIV infection is characterized by long-term alterations in immune function, but the contribution of immune factors to hypertension in PLWH is not fully understood. Prior studies have found that both innate and adaptive immune cell activation contributes to hypertension.

Factors influencing referrals for ultrasound-diagnosed complications during prenatal care in five low and middle income countries.

Background: Ultrasound during antenatal care (ANC) is proposed as a strategy for increasing hospital deliveries for complicated pregnancies and improving maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. The First Look study was a cluster-randomized trial conducted in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, Kenya, Pakistan and Zambia to evaluate the impact of ANC-ultrasound on these outcomes. An additional survey was conducted to identify factors influencing women with complicated pregnancies to attend referrals for additional care.
