Unlabelled: Diaphragmatic atrophy (DA) and lung injury (LI) have been associated with mechanical ventilation (MV). We aimed to assess the ultrasonographic changes in diaphragmatic thickness and LI during MV and their prediction for extubation failure in preterm infants. In this prospective observational study, mechanically ventilated preterm infants, < 30 weeks gestation, within the first 24 h of life underwent a baseline, within 24 h of MV, and serial diaphragmatic and lung ultrasounds scans until their first extubation attempt.

Introduction: New-onset postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common complication following cardiac surgeries. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) showed a significant reduction in the incidence of POAF. This review aimed to systematically summarize and Meta-analyze data from previously published Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs).

Background: Hearing impairment has frequently been described in β-thalassemia patients with a significant impact on the patients' quality of life. Most studies provided evidence of deferoxamine (DFO) dose-related ototoxicity, however, the data is scarce regarding deferasirox (DFX) as a sole iron chelator.

Aim: We aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and vestibular dysfunction in regularly transfused β-thalassemia patients who had been treated with DFX film coated tablets.

Background: This in vitro study assessed the wear behavior of different CAD-CAM blocks and the abrasion of the enamel antagonist against these materials.

Methods: 64 disk-shaped specimens were prepared from 8 different CAD/CAM blocks as follow: one lithium disilicate glass ceramics block "IPS Emax CAD" as control group, two zirconia reinforced lithium silicate "Vita Suprinity & Celtra DUO," one interpenetrating network ceramic block "Vita Enamic," Three resin-based block composites "Lava Ultimate, Cerasmart & Brilliant-crios" as well as one hybrid nanoceramic "Shofu block HC". All specimens were mounted against canine and tested for two body wear analysis using a chewing simulating loading machine (100,000 cycles, 50 N, 5/55 °C).

Myrrh Essential Oil Mitigates Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion-Induced Injury.

Curr Issues Mol Biol

February 2023

College of Clinical Pharmacy, King Faisal University, Al-Ahsa 31982, Saudi Arabia.

Background: Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced renal injury is a common reason for kidney injury in clinical settings; therefore, continuous investigation of novel nephroprotective agents is crucial. Myrrh, the oleoresin exudates generated by the genus , display numerous pharmacological actions. This study tried to assess the preventive effects of myrrh essential oil against I/R-induced renal damage.

Objectives: To describe our experience in excision of the submandibular gland (SMG) without drain insertion and with preservation of the facial artery as a day case surgery as well as evaluation of the surgical outcomes of this procedure.

Methods: Prospective case series study of 42 cases of chronic calcular submandibular sialadenitis that underwent SMG excision by the same surgical team during the period from 2017 to 2021. The initial surgical plan in all cases was to excise the SMG with preservation of the facial artery and without drain insertion.

Among the world's leading causes of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects the arteries. Both vasodilation and vasoconstriction, low levels of nitric oxide and high levels of reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory factors characterize dysfunctional blood vessels. Hypertension, and atherosclerosis, all start with this dysfunction.

The role of ivabradine in doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity: exploring of underlying argument.

Inflammopharmacology

December 2022

Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Damanhour University, Damanhour, 22511, AlBeheira, Egypt.

This study investigated the potential role of ivabradine (IVN) in the attenuation of doxorubicin (DXR)-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. A total of 28 Swiss-Albino male mice were used, divided into four equal groups: the negative control did not receive any agents (n = 7), the DXR group received a single dose of DXR 20 mg/kg (n = 7), the treated group A was pretreated with IVN 5 mg/kg plus DXR (n = 7), and the treated group B was pretreated with IVN 10 mg/kg plus DXR (n = 7). The duration of this study was 10 days.

This study investigated the dietary effect of phycocyanin (SPC) on growth performance (body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR)) at starter, grower, and finisher stages, intestinal histomorphology, serum biochemical parameters, inflammatory and antioxidant indices, and proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α and caspase-3) immune expression in broiler chickens. In total, 250 one-day-old chicks (Ross 308 broiler) were randomly allotted to five experimental groups (5 replicates/group, 10 chicks/replicate) and fed basal diets supplemented with five levels of SPC (0, 0.25, 0.

Objective: To determine the early treatment response after microwave ablation (MWA) of inoperable lung neoplasms using the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value calculated 24 h after the ablation.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 47 patients with 68 lung lesions, who underwent percutaneous MWA from January 2008 to December 2017. Evaluation of the lesions was done using MRI including DWI sequence with ADC value calculation pre-ablation and 24 h post-ablation.

Background: Galectin-3 protein encoded by lectin galactoside-binding soluble-3 (LGALS-3) gene is an important genetic factor in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its cardiovascular obstacles in various populations. We aimed to elicit the pro-inflammatory effect of galectin-3 as determined by interleukin-6 (IL-6) serum levels and to explore the relationship between galectin-3 (LGALS-3 rs4652) gene variant and its expression levels with coronary artery disease (CAD) risk among T2DM Egyptian patients.

Methods: 112 lean subjects were compared to 100 T2DM without CAD and 84 T2DM with CAD.

Genet Test Mol Biomarkers

September 2021

Medical Biochemistry Department, and Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagazig, Zagazig, Egypt.

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 () is an enzyme in the family of proprotein convertases implicated in lipid metabolism and is a significant genetic risk factor in cardiovascular diseases among various populations. This study explored the correlation between the alleles of the rs505151 (E670G) locus of the gene and its expression levels with coronary artery disease (CAD) risk in Egyptian patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A case-control study was performed on 112 lean subjects compared to 100 T2DM patients without CAD and 84 T2DM patients with CAD to investigate the relationships among expression levels, the E670G (rs505151) gene variant, lipid concentrations, and CAD risk in an Egyptian diabetic population.

Background: The restricted effect, significant toxicity, and emerging resistance of anti-toxoplasmosis synthetic agents impose the search for alternatives. The current research aimed to evaluate the prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy of Rosmarinus officinalis extracts and their mixtures against chronic murine toxoplasmosis and to clarify the phenomenon of delayed death.

Methods: This research included two experimental designs, the first to test the preventive and curative efficacy of the extracts and the second to assess delayed death in mice infected with the ME49 strain of Toxoplasma gondii.
