Recurrence in childhood medulloblastoma.

Thirty-eight consecutive children treated according to the HIT2000 and HIT91 studies for medulloblastoma who suffered 40 recurrence events were identified from a neuroradiological database. The objective of this study was to examine vaccination coverage in children and factors associated with parental acceptance during the first years after recommendation. In a regional surveillance area, cross-sectional parent surveys were conducted in 2006, 2007 and 2008 in random samples (n=600) of children aged 18-36 months; data were obtained for 372, 364 and 352 children, respectively.

Although a few novel antibiotics have been recently introduced into clinical practice, the search for alternative strategies to efficiently combat staphylococcal infections is urgently demanded to decrease the enormous burden caused by pathogenic staphylococci.

First survey of metallo-beta-lactamases in clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a German university hospital.

A total of 489 clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated for metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) production. Molecular analysis detected a blaVIM-1 gene in the chromosome of one isolate and a blaVIM-2 gene carried on the plasmid in seven isolates. Moreover, we showed that an initial screening by combined susceptibility testing of imipenem and ceftazidime followed by a confirmatory EDTA combination disk test represents a valid alternative to the molecular investigation of MBL genes, making MBL detection possible in routine diagnostic laboratories.

Treating multiple sclerosis (MS) with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) has been marked by both progress and setbacks in the past 2 years, which are reviewed here. The natalizumab section of the article centers around progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), and discusses PML risk in relation to treatment duration, bioassays for individual risk prediction, the concept of drug holidays, clinical course and treatment of PML, as well as safety-related regulatory actions. The rituximab section critically analyzes recent clinical trial results, discusses the clinical relevance of anti-idiotypic mAbs and makes a short excursion to neuromyelitis optica.
