Based on the assumption that postmortem cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is contaminated depending on the chosen sampling technique in the forensic setting resulting in bloody or at least hemolytic CSF samples, we systematically documented a total of 183 postmortem CSF samples. These samples were all assessed for their quality and color, regardless of the cause of death or the postmortem interval. The investigations were carried out through subjective assessment of color and turbidity, as well as objective measurements of the optical density (OD) of the CSF supernatants after centrifugation of each sample, with standardized photographic documentation.

Preeclampsia is a disorder of pregnancy characterized by endothelial dysfunction, abnormal placentation, systemic inflammation, and altered immune reaction. The aim of this study was to investigate the immune checkpoint molecules TIM-3 and Gal-9 on macrophages and Hofbauer cells (HBC) in the placenta of preeclampsia patients. Immunohistochemistry and Immunofluorescence was used to characterize the expression of the macrophage markers CD68 and CD163, CK7 and the proteins TIM-3 and Gal-9 in the placentas of preeclampsia patients comparing it to the placentas of healthy pregnancies.

In pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), endogenous MYC is required for S-phase progression and escape from immune surveillance. Here we show that MYC in PDAC cells is needed for the recruitment of the PAF1c transcription elongation complex to RNA polymerase and that depletion of CTR9, a PAF1c subunit, enables long-term survival of PDAC-bearing mice. PAF1c is largely dispensable for normal proliferation and regulation of MYC target genes.

Background: Herpesviruses are common animal and human pathogens that cause severe health problems in children, immunocompromised patients, and infected animals with a host range from fish to mammals. Anthocyanin-containing plant extracts have been described as potent antivirals, which might cause fewer harmful side effects than direct-acting antivirals. Here, we report that an extract of Aristotelia chilensis (Molina) Stuntz (Elaeocarpaceae) (MBE) with a high content of the anthocyanin delphinidin suppresses lytic replication of equine, murine and human herpesviruses of replication in vitro.

Blood oxygen saturation is an important clinical parameter, especially in postoperative hospitalized patients, monitored in clinical practice by arterial blood gas (ABG) and/or pulse oximetry that both are not suitable for a long-term continuous monitoring of patients during the entire hospital stay, or beyond. Technological advances developed recently for consumer-grade fitness trackers could-at least in theory-help to fill in this gap, but benchmarks on the applicability and accuracy of these technologies in hospitalized patients are currently lacking. We therefore conducted at the postanaesthesia care unit under controlled settings a prospective clinical trial with 201 patients, comparing in total >1,000 oxygen blood saturation measurements by fitness trackers of three brands with the ABG gold standard and with pulse oximetry.

Session 3 of the lymphoma workshop of the XXI joint meeting of the European Association for Haematopathology and the Society for Hematopathology took place in Florence, Italy, on September 22, 2022. The topics of this session were splenic and nodal marginal zone lymphomas, transformation in marginal zone lymphomas, and pediatric nodal marginal zone lymphomas and their differential diagnosis as well as related entities. Forty-two cases in these categories were submitted to the workshop, including splenic lymphomas (marginal zone and diffuse red pulp lymphomas), transformed marginal zone lymphomas (splenic and nodal), nodal marginal zone lymphomas with increased TFH-cells, and pediatric nodal marginal zone lymphomas.

Ferroptosis is a form of cell death characterized by phospholipid peroxidation, where numerous studies have suggested that the induction of ferroptosis is a therapeutic strategy to target therapy refractory cancer entities. Ferroptosis suppressor protein 1 (FSP1), an NAD(P)H-ubiquinone reductase, is a key determinant of ferroptosis vulnerability, and its pharmacological inhibition was shown to strongly sensitize cancer cells to ferroptosis. A first generation of FSP1 inhibitors, exemplified by the small molecule iFSP1, has been reported; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying inhibition have not been characterized in detail.
