Unlabelled: Person-centred care is an international healthcare priority. Strategies are needed to support nurses and midwives to understand the meaning of person-centredness and support them to embed this philosophy into practice. Clinical supervision has been proposed as a strategy to support this but requires more evidence.

Article Synopsis
  • Colorectal cancers (CRCs) linked to biallelic germline variants show specific mutational signatures (SBS18+SBS36 and SBS30) that could also be present in adenomas, which are precursors to CRCs.
  • A study sequenced DNA from adenomas and CRCs in biallelic cases and compared them with sporadic cases to investigate these signatures.
  • Results indicated that adenomas in biallelic cases had similar mutational signature proportions as their corresponding CRCs, suggesting testing adenomas could enhance the detection of biallelic cases and improve variant classification for better CRC prevention strategies.

Micro RNA Dysregulation in Keratinocyte Carcinomas: Clinical Evidence, Functional Impact, and Future Directions.

Int J Mol Sci

August 2024

Molecular Horizons, School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience, University of Wollongong, Wollongong, NSW 2500, Australia.

The keratinocyte carcinomas, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), are the most common cancers in humans. Recently, an increasing body of literature has investigated the role of miRNAs in keratinocyte carcinoma pathogenesis, progression and their use as therapeutic agents and targets, or biomarkers. However, there is very little consistency in the literature regarding the identity of and/or role of individual miRNAs in cSCC (and to a lesser extent BCC) biology.

Brain and heart activity during interactions with pet dogs: A portable electroencephalogram and heart rate variability study.

Int J Psychophysiol

October 2024

Graduate School of Medicine, Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health, University of Wollongong, Australia; Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute, University of Wollongong, 2522, Australia. Electronic address:

Dog ownership has been linked to numerous benefits to human health and wellbeing. However, due to the lack of previous research on changes to brain activity during interactions with pet dogs, the underlying psychophysiological mechanisms are still unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine changes in heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), and electroencephalogram (EEG) power during interactions between dog owners and their pet dog.

Three-dimensional (3D) tissue models have gained recognition for their improved ability to mimic the native cell microenvironment compared to traditional two-dimensional models. This progress has been driven by advances in tissue-engineering technologies such as 3D bioprinting, a promising method for fabricating biomimetic living tissues. While bioprinting has succeeded in generating various tissues to date, creating neural tissue models remains challenging.

Parsing the effect of co-culture with brain organoids on Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) using quantitative proteomics.

Int J Biochem Cell Biol

September 2024

Children's Cancer Research Unit, Kids Research, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Westmead, Australia; The University of Sydney, Discipline of Child and Adolescent Health, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Westmead, Australia. Electronic address:

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas (DIPGs) are deadly brain cancers in children for which there is no effective treatment. This can partly be attributed to preclinical models that lack essential elements of the in vivo tissue environment, resulting in treatments that appear promising preclinically, but fail to result in effective cures. Recently developed co-culture models combining stem cell-derived brain organoids with brain cancer cells provide tissue dimensionality and a human-relevant tissue-like microenvironment.

Repressor element-1 silencing transcription factor (REST) is a transcriptional repressor involved in neurodevelopment and neuroprotection. REST forms a complex with the REST corepressors, CoREST1, CoREST2, or CoREST3 (encoded by , , and , respectively). Emerging evidence suggests that the CoREST family can target unique genes independently of REST, in various neural and glial cell types during different developmental stages.

Factors affecting dietary progression post cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

Clin Nutr ESPEN

October 2024

School of Medicine, Smart Foods Centre, Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute, University of Wollongong, Building 32, Northfields Ave, Keiraville, NSW, 2500, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how patients recovering from cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) progress with their diets postoperatively and the factors influencing this progression.* -
  • Out of 42 patients, those with fast dietary progression (FDP) started a full fluid diet within 7 days, while the slow dietary progression (SDP) group took longer and faced more complications, such as prolonged ileus and longer hospital stays.* -
  • The findings suggest that addressing the dietary progression speed and implementing timely nutritional strategies, such as parenteral nutrition, could improve recovery outcomes for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis.*

Background: The emergency resuscitation nurse is a challenging and specialised role at the forefront of critical care practice in the emergency department. Despite their extensive specialist knowledge and skill requirements, in Australia there is no state-wide or nationally agreed approach to how to best provide training that meets a set of fixed objectives and requisite skills for resuscitation nurses. Due to an ageing nursing population and increasing workforce attrition, an efficacious accelerated pathway to acquire specialist resuscitation nursing knowledge, is necessary.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is characterized by increasing fibrosis, which can enhance tumor progression and spread. Here, we undertook an unbiased temporal assessment of the matrisome of the highly metastatic KPC (, , ) and poorly metastatic KPC (, , ) genetically engineered mouse models of pancreatic cancer using mass spectrometry proteomics. Our assessment at early-, mid-, and late-stage disease reveals an increased abundance of nidogen-2 (NID2) in the KPC model compared to KPC, with further validation showing that NID2 is primarily expressed by cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs).

  • The study examines the effects of timing for esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) in adults with food bolus impaction, comparing results to European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) guidelines.
  • A total of 248 patients were reviewed, revealing complication rates of 31.6% for minor issues, 6.9% for tears, and 0.8% for perforations, with no significant links between delays in EGD and adverse outcomes.
  • The findings suggest that age and the severity of complications are better predictors of hospital stay than the timing of EGD following ingestion or presentation.

Disrupted proteome homeostasis (proteostasis) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been a major focus of research in the past two decades. However, the proteostasis processes that become disturbed in ALS are not fully understood. Obtaining more detailed knowledge of proteostasis disruption in association with different ALS-causing mutations will improve our understanding of ALS pathophysiology and may identify novel therapeutic targets and strategies for ALS patients.
