The objective of this observational study was to examine the effect of lameness on the resting behavior of dairy cattle through the transition period in a mattress-bedded commercial freestall facility, and explore the relationships between lameness, behavior, and metabolic indicators of disease. A convenience sample was used, comprised of 40 multiparous and 17 primiparous Holstein cows that were recruited as they entered the close-up pen and tracked through the maternity, hospital, and fresh pens. At recruitment, 87.

Rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells were grown in 0, 10, 25, or 50 microM lead-containing growth media for up to twelve weeks. High-threshold whole-cell calcium currents from these PC12 cells were recorded in lead-free recording media (control), then in 1 microM lead-containing recording media (acute challenge), and finally again in lead-free recording media (wash). The acute lead challenge decreased calcium currents in all treatment groups (including 0 microM lead).

A yearling horse was presented with a septic, transverse fracture in the frontal plane of the distal phalanx. The fracture fragment was surgically removed from the parent bone via the sole. The foot was managed by corrective farriery and the horse was able to be ridden for pleasure.

We evaluated bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) immunohistochemistry of paraffin-, methyl methacrylate (MMA)-, and epon-araldite (epon)-embedded canine bone specimens to establish an optimal technique for studying cell kinetics of fracture healing in a canine tibial gap model. Dogs were sacrificed 4 months after tibial ostectomy and 1 hr after i.v.

The free-surface of the tapeworm's tegument was examined for morphological evidence of secretion after fixation by rapid freezing-freeze substitution and alternatively by immersion in low concentrations of glutaraldehyde maintained at room temperature. After low-aldehyde fixation, omega profiles were at the bases of tegumental microvilli, arguing for the participation of some of the ectocytoplasm's vesicles in secretion of their contents to the intestinal lumen. The almost instantaneous fixation provided by the rapid freezing-freeze substitution technique documents the constitutive production of 0.

The effects of spontaneous and experimentally induced congestive heart failure on serum thyroxine (T4), 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3), 3,3'5'-triiodothyronine (reverse T3), free T4, free T3 concentrations, and the serum T4 and T3 concentrations in response to administration of thyrotropin were studied. Serum thyroid hormone concentrations were not different between eight dogs with spontaneous congestive heart failure and normal age matched control dogs. Seven dogs with experimental heart failure were tested before and after induction of congestive heart failure by rapid ventricular pacing.

The effect of 5 fracture fixation methods on bone mineral density (BMD) measurement of femurs, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was determined in a canine model. Six regions of interest were measured, including the entire femur, the diaphysis of the femur, and small regions centered over the middiaphysis of the bone (lateral middiaphyseal cortex, medial middiaphyseal cortex, middiaphyseal medullary canal, and total middiaphysis). Eight unpaired femurs were collected and scanned by use of DXA before (5 separate scans/femur) and after (5 separate scans/femur) fixation by use of 1 of 5 fixation methods.

Volvulus of the ascending colon (ACV) in the horse results in microvascular injury and necrosis of the intestinal mucosa. This study investigated the site and type of microvascular injury which occurs within the mucosa and submucosa following ACV. Histopathology of volvulus treated ponies demonstrated mucosal necrosis with microvascular hemorrhage and thrombosis.

N-(5-nitro-2-thiazolyl)-N'-carboxymethylurea (NTCU) has been identified as a urinary metabolite of the antischistosomal drug niridazole [1-(5-nitro-2-thiazolyl)-2-imidazolidinone]. When DBA/2J mice were treated with [14C]niridazole, a metabolite comprising 12-14% of the total radioactivity in 24-hr urine samples was resolved by HPLC. The compound was subsequently isolated from pooled urine of niridazole-treated patients.
