The population of most countries in the world is increasing and understanding risk factors that can influence the health of the older population is critical. Older adults consume alcohol often in a risky, binge manner. Previous work has demonstrated that aged rats are more sensitive to many of the effects of acute ethanol.

Introduction: Shoulder arthroplasties have been demonstrated to provide reliable pain relief as well as functional benefits. The advent of the reverse shoulder arthroplasty allowed for expanded indications for shoulder replacement. Several studies comparing the outcomes of anatomic and reverse total shoulder arthroplasties have demonstrated decreased range of motion in the reverse arthroplasty cohort, especially in internal rotation.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a flexible, nontoxic polymer commonly used in biological and medical research, and it is generally regarded as biologically inert. PEG molecules of variable sizes are also used as crowding agents to mimic intracellular environments. A recent study with PEG crowders revealed decreased catalytic activity of prolyl-tRNA synthetase (Ec ProRS), where the smaller molecular weight PEGs had the maximum impact.

Background: Simulations are an important modality for practicing high-acuity, low-frequency events. We implemented a deliberate practice simulation-based workshop to improve pediatric end-of-life care skills (PECS) competence.
Purpose: To understand pediatric subspecialty fellows' perceptions about influences of a simulation-based workshop on PECS provided at the bedside several months following participation.

The tapetum, a tissue that elsewhere ensures correct spore development, is missing in some bryophytes. A new study shows that, in the liverwort, Marchantia polymorpha, a gene controlling spore wall deposition is expressed in the capsule lining, so these cells essentially function as a tapetum.

Moore Nursing Research Professor (Meiers), College of Nursing and Health Sciences, University of Wisconsin Eau Claire.
Purpose/objectives: The aim of the project was to discern whether a collaborative, consultative-rich, clinical nurse specialist-led project could increase completion rates of a patient health questionnaire for depression and a generalized anxiety disorder questionnaire with appropriate referrals in adult patients in the ambulatory and hospital settings of a robust cardiovascular surgery practice before cardiovascular surgery.
Description Of Project: The Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control implementation methodology guided this quality improvement project. The workflow was analyzed in collaboration with stakeholders, and barriers to and facilitators of questionnaire completion were identified.
Background: Individuals who sustain an ACL injury and undergo reconstruction (ACLR) are at risk for the development of osteoarthritis. Recent investigations have applied the Englund criteria to categorize people with a history of ACLR as someone with a symptomatic or asymptomatic knee.
Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in health-related quality of life (HRQL) and psychological outcomes in people with a history of ACLR who were categorized as symptomatic or non-symptomatic by application of the Englund criteria.

Background: The University of Wisconsin System Incentive Grant, Nurses for Wisconsin: Learn, Teach, Lead (N4WI) was a workforce initiative to address the nursing faculty shortage at four universities and included funding nurses to their terminal degree, postdoctoral fellowships, and loan forgiveness for faculty hires. It also included professional development opportunities for awardees.
Purpose: The purpose of the article is to disseminate the evaluation of N4WI and discuss the impact of the project.

Background: There are limited data on objectively measured activity and postural behaviors of law enforcement officers (LEOs) in relation to risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS).
Objectives: To examine the associations between objectively measured activity and postural behaviors and MetS risk among LEOs.
Methods: Thirty-one LEOs, mean (SD) age 33 (10) years, participated in the study.

A literature review is an important part of conducting academic research. Knowing how to conduct a literature search and write a high-quality literature review is a valuable skill. Herein, the authors describe the method of introducing a literature review writing exercise in an upper-level biochemistry course.

This study analyzed data from the nationally representative Health and Retirement Study (HRS) to examine the association between widowhood and depression. The results revealed that both men and women experienced increased depression after widowhood, with women exhibiting a better recovery pattern over time. Religiosity, especially attending religious services, was found to be a beneficial coping mechanism for both genders, although men were less religious than women.

Intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy is an important tool for examining the effects of molecular crowding and confinement on the structure, dynamics, and function of proteins. Synthetic crowders such as dextran, ficoll, polyethylene glycols, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and their respective monomers are used to mimic crowded intracellular environments. Interactions of these synthetic crowders with tryptophan and the subsequent impact on its fluorescence properties are therefore critically important for understanding the possible interference created by these crowders.

Science is among humanity's greatest achievements, yet scientific censorship is rarely studied empirically. We explore the social, psychological, and institutional causes and consequences of scientific censorship (defined as actions aimed at obstructing particular scientific ideas from reaching an audience for reasons other than low scientific quality). Popular narratives suggest that scientific censorship is driven by authoritarian officials with dark motives, such as dogmatism and intolerance.

Objectives: The study's aim was to gain a qualitative understanding of vaccine beliefs and attitudes toward COVID-19 among Somali residents living in Northern Wisconsin (WI). While vaccination rates are significantly lower among Black and Hispanic populations, those with lower educational levels, and in rural areas, minimal is known about Somali population perspectives of COVID-19 vaccination rates.
Methods: Through qualitative methodology employing focus groups for data collection and the inclusion of Somali interpreters, we explored Somali community viewpoints regarding these topics.

Sensory integration theory predicts natural selection should favour adaptive responses of animals to multiple forms of information, yet empirical tests of this prediction are rare, particularly in free-living mammals. Studying indirect predator cues offers a salient opportunity to inquire about multimodal risk assessment and its potentially interactive effects on prey responses. Here we exposed California ground squirrels from two study sites (that differ in human and domestic dog activity) to acoustic and/or olfactory predator cues to reveal divergent patterns of signal dominance.

Purpose: Storytelling is an integral part of human life, providing opportunities for social closeness, relationship development, and identity exploration. Having aphasia can disrupt the ability to convey stories across a variety of settings. Structured songwriting frameworks may provide people with aphasia an opportunity to successfully engage in this medium for storytelling.

Understanding fraction magnitudes is foundational for later math achievement. To represent a fraction x/y, children are often taught to use partitioning: Break the whole into y parts and shade in x parts. Past research has shown that partitioning on number lines supports children's fraction magnitude knowledge more than partitioning on area models.

Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is commonly used to measure the mRNA expression of target genes in zebrafish. Gene expression values from RT-qPCR are typically reported as relative fold-changes, and relative quantification of RT-qPCR data incorporates primer amplification efficiency values for each target gene. We describe the influence of the primer amplification efficiency analysis method on RT-qPCR gene expression fold-change calculations.

Hallucinogenic mushrooms have been used in religious and cultural ceremonies for centuries. Of late, psilocybin, the psychoactive compound in hallucinogenic mushrooms, has received increased public interest as a novel drug for treating mood and substance use disorders (SUDs). In addition, in recent years, some states in the United States have legalized psilocybin for medical and recreational use.

Binge-like ethanol exposure during adolescence has been shown to produce long lasting effects in animal models including anxiety-like behavior that can last into young adulthood and impairments in cognition that can last throughout most of the lifespan. However, little research has investigated if binge-like ethanol exposure during adolescence produces persistent anxiety-like behavior and concomitantly impairs cognition late in life. Furthermore, few studies have investigated such behavioral effects in both female and male rats over the lifespan.
