Increasing Graduate Student Awareness of Cultural Competence Through Bias Exploration Related to Diverse Cultural Families.

Emphasis by the American Nurses Association and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing regarding the importance of cultural competence in nursing education led to the development of a strategy to address personal bias in graduate nursing students. With the updated Essentials and a change to competency-based education, a need to address culturally congruent practices while increasing awareness of professional organization recommendations exists. Since Domain 2 of the Essentials highlights that culturally competent care is essential to person-centered care, a strategy that enhances knowledge by expanding the definition of culture beyond ethnicity and race was developed.

Early intervention speech-language pathologists' beliefs and practices related to assessing dual language learners.

Introduction: Early intervention (EI) speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are required to provide culturally and linguistically responsive assessments for dual language learners (DLLs). However, SLPs consistently report feeling underprepared to assess DLLs and research demonstrates gaps in implementation of best practices in pediatric outpatient and school-based settings. This study was designed to understand EI SLPs' beliefs and practices related to assessing DLLs referred to early intervention programs.

Virtual Reality Videos for Symptom Management in Hospice and Palliative Care.

Objective: To learn more about the effect of virtual reality videos on patients' symptoms near the end of life, including which are most effective, how long the effect lasts, and which patients benefit the most.

Patients And Methods: We conducted a prospective study of 30 patients in a regional hospice and palliative care program from March 11, 2022, through July 14, 2023. Using a head-mounted display virtual reality, all participants viewed a 15-minute video of serene nature scenes with ambient sounds.

Conformational fluidity of intrinsically disordered proteins in crowded environment: a molecular dynamics simulation study.

The class of intrinsically disordered proteins lacks stable three-dimensional structures. Their flexibility allows them to engage in a wide variety of interactions with other biomolecules thus making them biologically relevant and efficient. Understanding the reasons why people consume alcohol is a critical health issue. Alcohol produces a variety of effects, including a reduction in stress or negative emotional states termed an anxiolytic effect. The anxiolytic effect of alcohol is an often-reported reason for why people begin consuming the drug.

Supporting Participation Through Project-Based Intervention: A Tutorial for Working With People With Aphasia in Individual Sessions.

Purpose: Participation is an integral focus of services to people with aphasia and is considered best practice within the scope of practice for speech-language pathology. The Life Participation Approach to Aphasia encourages meaningful participation in life for people living with aphasia. In theory, providing participation-based services to people with aphasia seems logical; however, embedding these constructs of participation into practice can be challenging for speech-language pathologists (SLPs).

Predicting pharmaceutical supply chain disruptions before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Disruptions to the pharmaceutical supply chain (PSC) have negative implications for patients, motivating their prediction to improve risk mitigation. Although data analytics and machine learning methods have been proposed to support the characterization of probabilities to inform decisions and risk mitigation strategies, their application in the PSC has not been previously described. Further, it is unclear how well these models perform in the presence of emergent events representing deep uncertainty such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Psychosocial factors play a central role in determining SNAP utilization for farm workforce.

Introduction: Federal food safety net programs, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), may not reach vulnerable populations like rural residents, immigrants, and Latinx individuals. Because these groups are overrepresented among the farm workforce, exploring SNAP utilization among farm communities may clarify the role it plays in alleviating food insecurity.

Objective: To describe the nursing strategies used to mitigate the impact of forced separation between hospitalized acute and critical care patients and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research Methodology/design: A scoping review was performed in accordance with JBI methodology.

Settings: Those acute and critical care areas in which sudden, often unexpected, emergent episodes of illness or injury were treated.

Melatonin is vital in human circadian rhythm and infant development. This scoping review summarized the current knowledge about melatonin's presence and effects in human milk to promote better understanding of its secretion pattern and clinical advancement of maternal-infant health. The review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute guideline and answered the question: What is the current knowledge about melatonin hormone in human milk? The databases searched were PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Web of Science, LILACS, Scielo, EMBASE, Science Direct, Eric, Cochrane, in addition to grey literature and reference lists of included sources.

Introduction: Alternatives are needed to traditional care to help patients manage pain and discomfort in acute care settings. Complementary and integrative therapies (CITs) involve alternative medicine practices that are assimilated into conventional care. The degree to which registered nurses (RNs) use CIT in acute care settings, however, remains unclear.

A Comparative Study of Organizational Grief Support and Burnout Among Nursing Home Staff.

Background And Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dimensions of grief support (recognition of the relationship, acknowledgement of the loss, and inclusion of the griever) and aspects of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) among nursing home staff.

Research Design And Methods: Data were collected from 553 nursing home workers from 37 nursing home facilities in 5 states during fall of 2022. Responses to the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Grief Support Health Care Scale were analyzed for this study.

Virtual Screening of Molecules via Neural Fingerprint-based Deep Learning Technique.

Unlabelled: A machine learning-based drug screening technique has been developed and optimized using convolutional neural network-derived fingerprints. The optimization of weights in the neural network-based fingerprinting technique was compared with fixed Morgan fingerprints in regard to binary classification on drug-target binding affinity. The assessment was carried out using six different target proteins using randomly chosen small molecules from the ZINC15 database for training.

A Virtual Communication Workshop to Increase Confidence Using Telehealth Modalities.

Introduction: COVID-19 ended in-person communication training workshops at our institution, so we sought to provide a way for family medicine residents to hone their telephone and audio-visual skills online.

Methods: We developed a 2-hour online workshop where residents practiced delivering serious news to family members via telephone or videoconferencing call and measured participant confidence via pre-, post-, and 6-month surveys.

Results: Participant confidence in delivering serious news via telephone and videoconferencing increased.
