The amount of scientific literature on conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is growing at a phenomenal rate. Animal studies and clinical trials indicate the possibility that CLA could be useful in improving human health in a number of areas, eg, controlling body fat gain and enhancing immunity while also reducing inflammation and other adverse effects typically associated with immune enhancement. The background of this growing research field and mechanistic insights from animal and cell culture experiments are briefly reviewed.

A multistate cooperative study was conducted to study the current issue of tail length in docked lambs and its relationship to incidence of rectal prolapse. A total of 1,227 lambs at six locations were randomly allocated to two or three tail dock treatments: 1) short--tail was removed as close to the body as possible, 2) medium--tail was removed at a location midway between the attachment of the tail to the body and the attachment of the caudal folds to the tail, and 3) long--tail was removed at the attachment of the caudal folds to the tail. Short-docked lambs had a greater (P < 0.

Wild species of Solanum are excellent sources of disease resistance genes that may be incorporated into S. tuberosum through breeding. This study was initiated to determine whether multiple forms of disease resistance could be identified in interspecific Solanum hybrids.

In early June 2002, yellow spots and bands with erumpent telia on previous year's needles of Colorado blue spruce (Picea pungens) were noted in landscape tree nurseries in both northern (Sawyer County) and southern (Dane County) Wisconsin. Many 1 to 2 m tall trees were symptomatic at each location. Based on the age of affected needles, time of year of telium development, and telial characteristics including the size and shape of teliospores, the pathogen was identified as Chrysomyxa weirii, the cause of Weir's cushion rust (1,2).

A key component of a sound functional genomics infrastructure is the availability of a knockout mutant for every gene in the genome. A fruitful approach to systematically knockingout genes in the plant Arabidopsis thaliana has been the use of transferred-DNA (T-DNA) from Agrobacterium tumefaciens as an insertional mutagen. One of the assumptions underlying the use of T-DNA as a mutagen is that the insertion of these DNA elements into the Arabidopsis genome occurs at randomly selected locations.

Beans with yellow mosaic and/or leaf crumple symptoms were collected in three fields in the southern area of the province of Havana, Cuba in December 2001 and February 2002. DNA was extracted from the fresh bean leaves of 25 samples (1). Dot blot hybridization was performed at high stringency with a specific probe for Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV).

Patient motion, especially respiratory motion, results in various artefacts such as blurring and streaks in tomographic images. The interplay of the movement of the beam aperture and variations of organ anatomy during delivery can create 'hot' and 'cold' spots throughout the field in intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Detection and correction of patient motion is extremely important in tomographic imaging and IMRT.

Our hypothesis was that follicular cysts would develop if cows experienced an estradiol-induced GnRH LH surge in the absence of an ovulatory follicle. Further, we hypothesized that estradiol would fail to induce a subsequent GnRH/LH surge in these cows until they were treated with progesterone. In experiment 1, seven cows were synchronized with a controlled internal drug releasing device (CIDR) for 9 d and each received 500 microg of cloprostenol on d 7.

A number of space-based experiments have been conducted to assess the impact of microgravity on plant growth and development. In general, these experiments did not identify any profound impact of microgravity on plant growth and development, though investigations to study seed development have indicated difficulty in plants completing their reproductive cycle. However, it was not clear whether the lack of seed production was due to gravity effects or some other environmental condition prevailing in the unit used for conducting the experiment.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease involving genetic and environmental risk factors. Geographic, genetic, and biological evidence suggests that one environmental risk factor may be lack of vitamin D. Here, we investigated how 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) (1,25-(OH)(2)D(3)) inhibits experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an MS model.

A 7-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat was referred for worsening gastrointestinal and haematologic abnormalities. Physical status deteriorated further despite intravenous crystalloids, blood transfusion and nutritional support. Cardiorespiratory signs developed and the cat died suddenly while straining to defaecate.

The reduction of Cr(VI) by the thiol-containing compounds cysteine and glutathione and by reduced sulfur in humic substances was monitored with sulfur and chromium X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy in chromium-contaminated soils. Reaction of humic acids with Cr(VI) resulted in a reduction of the peak area of thiols and an increase in the peak area of disulfides in the sulfur XANES spectra. Analysis of the sulfur XANES spectra in various systems indicates that the reduction of Cr(VI) by humic substances involves a thiol/disulfide redox couple analogous to that of the Cr(VI) reduction by the simple thiol-containing compounds cysteine and glutathione.

This verified energy fluence can be used in conjunction with an image in the treatment position to reconstruct the full three-dimensional dose deposited. A method for delivery verification that utilizes a measured database of detector signal is described in this work.

Mapping studies were conducted to delineate the site(s) of action for the arousal-enhancing actions of norepinephrine (NE) within the basal forebrain region encompassing the medial preoptic area (MPOA) and the substantia innominata (SI). Varying doses of NE, the beta-agonist, isoproterenol, or the alpha1-agonist, phenylephrine, were infused into the MPOA or SI in the resting rat. Infusions of NE (4 nmol, 16 nmo/150 nl), isoproterenol (15 nmol/150 nl), and phenylephrine (40 nmol/250 nl) into the MPOA elicited robust increases in waking.

Vessel contrast was measured in the fluoroscopic images produced by a scanning-beam digital x-ray (SBDX) system and an image intensifier/television (II/TV) based system. The SBDX system electronically scans a series of pencil x-ray beams across the patient, each of which is directed at a distant small-area detector array. The reduction in detected scatter achieved with this geometry was expected to provide an increase in image contrast.

GafChromic (MD-55-2) radiochromic film has become increasingly popular for medical applications and has proven to be useful for brachytherapy dosimetry. To measure the absolute dose near a brachytherapy source, the response of the proposed detector in the measurement conditions relative to the response of the detector in calibration conditions must be known. MD-55-2 radiochromic film has been exposed in four different photon beams, a 30 and 40 kVp tungsten anode x-ray beam, a 75 kVp orthovoltage therapy beam, and a 60Co teletherapy beam to measure the relative detector response.

Experiments in Y-1 and primary adrenal cells have established that basal StAR mRNA is sufficient for maximum cAMP-stimulated cholesterol metabolism providing that newly synthesized p37 StAR precursor is phosphorylated, transferred to the matrix and proteolytically cleaved to pp30. This form is active at the inner membrane. The majority of mitochondrial StAR redistributes, perhaps with cholesterol, to matrix vesicles but no longer facilitates intermembrane transfer even when appropriately phosphorylated.
