Department of Microbiology, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA.

Acetic acid bacteria are used in many industrial processes such as the production of vinegar, vitamin C, the antidiabetic drug miglitol, and various artificial flavorings. These industrially important reactions are primarily carried out by an arsenal of periplasmic-facing membrane-bound dehydrogenases that incompletely oxidize their substrates and shuttle electrons directly into the respiratory chain. Among these dehydrogenases, GOX in was predicted to be a pyrroloquinoline quinone-dependent dehydrogenase of unknown function.

Recent research has shown that transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals are at risk of experiencing interpersonal violence, yet there may be differences within this group and across victimization types. The current study examined rates of seven types of interpersonal victimization based on six gender identities (cisgender women, cisgender men, trans women, trans men, nonbinary, and another identity) among a national study of college students. Data from the Spring 2021 American College Health Association's National College Health Assessment III (ACHA-NCHA III), a national-level study of U.

Despite being the second largest family of flowering plants, orchids represent community structure variation in plant-microbial associations, contributes to niche partitioning in metacommunity assemblages. Yet, mycorrhizal communities and interactions remain unknown for orchids that are highly specialized or even obligated in their associations with their mycorrhizal partners. In this study, we sought to compare orchid mycorrhizal fungal (OMF) communities of three co-occurring hemiepiphytic Vanilla species (V.

Department of Pediatrics and Department of Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, United States of America.

Herpesviruses have two distinct life cycle stages, latency and lytic replication. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a gamma-herpesvirus, establishes latency in vivo and in cultured cells. Cell lines harboring latent EBV can be induced into the lytic cycle by treatment with chemical inducing agents.

Neuromorphic computing is a new field of information technology, which is inspired by the biomimetic properties of the memristor as an electronic synapse and neuron. If there are electronic receptors that can transmit exterior impulses to the internal nervous system, then the use of memristors can be expanded to artificial nerves. In this study, a layer type memristor is used to build an artificial nociceptor in a very feasible and straightforward manner.

Article Synopsis
  • Bilaterally implanted cochlear implant users often struggle with interaural time differences (ITDs), which are essential for sound localization and understanding speech in noisy settings.
  • The challenge arises from a lack of coordination between the processors in each ear and the need for high stimulation rates to improve speech comprehension but at the cost of ITD sensitivity.
  • A new "mixed rate" strategy was tested that uses low rates for encoding ITDs on some channels while maintaining higher rates for speech on others, showing similar effectiveness to traditional methods in both speech understanding and sound localization tasks.

Background: In order to overcome obstacles to entry and inclusion in the workplace, individuals with disabilities engage in various impression management strategies to present themselves as the socially acceptable 'ideal employee.'

Objective: This study expands on previous disclosure research by asking individuals with disabilities to share their experiences of identity management and workplace challenges.

Methods: We leveraged qualitative research techniques to explore the reciprocal impact of workplace treatment and disclosure.

Fresh vegetables can harbor antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales. Enterobacter hormaechei is a bacterium belonging to the Enterobacterales order and the most commonly identified nosocomial pathogen of Enterobacter cloacae complex. The purpose of this study was to characterize a multi-drug resistant ESBL-producing E.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful, degenerative disease that affects the tissues of the joint spaces, such as the shoulder. Conventional medical treatment options, such as corticosteroid injections and anti-inflammatory medications, are not always sufficient to alleviate the symptoms from this disease. Low dose radiotherapy is a newer treatment option for patients with shoulder osteoarthritis and has shown positive outcomes.

Background: The estimation of body fat percentage (BF%) in wrestling is used to determine the minimum wrestling weight (MWW) and lowest allowable weight class (MWC) in which wrestlers are eligible to compete. A 12% minimum threshold is currently used for women wrestlers, yet a potential increase for safety has been discussed. Because of the novelty of collegiate women's wrestling, there is a paucity of literature available on the body composition norms of this population.

We investigate the morphological, electrical, magnetic, and resistive switching properties of (Co, Yb) co-ZnO for neuromorphic computing. By using hydrothermal synthesized nanoparticles and their corresponding sputtering target, we introduce Co and Yb into the ZnO structure, leading to increased oxygen vacancies and grain volume, indicating grain growth. This growth reduces grain boundaries, enhancing electrical conductivity and room-temperature ferromagnetism in Co and Yb-doped ZnO nanoparticles.

Considerable use of neonicotinoid insecticides has resulted in their detection in surface waters globally, with imidacloprid (IM) and thiamethoxam (TM) frequently found together. Neonicotinoids are selective agonists for invertebrate nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) leading to paralysis and death. While not overtly toxic to vertebrates, growing evidence suggests that chronic exposure to individual neonicotinoids can cause adverse health effects in fish.

The existence of a professional identity among sport psychology practitioners (SPPs) can increase ethical and effective practice while also leading to more satisfactory careers and advancing awareness of professional roles. There is currently no consensus regarding a sport psychology professional identity (SPPI), a definition of this construct, and the factors influencing it. As such, in the present study, we sought consensus on a definition of SPPI and aimed to identify associated factors.

Article Synopsis
  • This study tracked the performance and pacing trends of Olympic 1500-m race winners from 1924 to 2020, highlighting a significant improvement in finishing times by about 25 seconds over the period.
  • Most of the time improvements occurred in the early years (first 10 finals) with only two world records set and one athlete winning the event twice.
  • The pacing strategy shifted from a fast start, slow middle, and fast finish to a steadier acceleration throughout the race, with winners generally maintaining a tactical approach of staying near the front without leading until the later stages.

Generalized Stressors on Hive and Forager Bee Colonies.

Bull Math Biol

October 2023

Department of Mathematics, University of Tennessee Knoxville, Knoxville, TN, 37916, USA.

Hive-forming bees play an integral role in promoting agricultural sustainability and ecosystem preservation. The recent worldwide decline of several species of bees, and in particular, the honeybee in the United States, highlights the value in understanding possible causes. Over the past decade, numerous mathematical models and empirical experiments have worked to understand the causes of colony stress, with a particular focus on colony collapse disorder.

This research aims to determine the effect photobiomodulation treatment has on oral inflammation after routine dental prophylaxis in canines. Photobiomodulation therapy after dental procedures has been documented to reduce inflammation in human and animal models. Canines were randomly assigned into three groups: control group (CG;  = 15), left side treated group (LTG;  = 15), and right side treated group (RTG;  = 15).

Background: Kinetic asymmetries during sit-to-stand have been consistently observed early after total knee arthroplasty; however, the longer-term outcomes are less clear. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to analyze the results of studies examining inter-limb kinetic symmetry during sit-to-stand performance among individuals who were at least one-year post unilateral total knee arthroplasty.

Methods: PubMed, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, and Health Source databases were searched.
