Sex differences in cooperative coalitions: a mammalian perspective.

Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci

January 2023

School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Institute of Human Origins, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287-2402, USA.

In group-living species, cooperative tactics can offset asymmetries in resource-holding potential between individuals and alter the outcome of intragroup conflicts. Differences in the kinds of competitive pressures that males and females face might influence the benefits they gain from forming intragroup coalitions. We predicted that there would be a female bias in intragroup coalitions because females (1) are more like to live with kin than males are, and (2) compete over resources that are more readily shared than resources males compete over.

Purpose: This study examined the perceptions of health care experiences by individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) across the recovery continuum, regarding care received by a variety of health care providers following their TBI. It sought to identify whether perceptions differed across mild, moderate, and severe participants, as well as acute, subacute, and chronic recovery.

Method: Eighteen individuals with TBI were interviewed, using the Sydney Psychosocial Reintegration Scale-Second Edition (SPRS-2) and a semistructured interview about health care perceptions.

An Examination of Assisted Living Facility Administrator Qualifications Across States.

J Aging Soc Policy

January 2024

Professor and Program Director, Health Care Administration Program, Department of Management and Marketing, University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA.

Resident acuity, Medicaid's increased role in funding assisted living, and the COVID-19 pandemic have brought increased attention to the regulatory environment of assisted living facilities (ALFs) and the responsibilities of ALF administrators (ALFAs) are growing increasingly complex. This study explores, describes, and compares the education (degree and assisted living-specific training), experience, exam (competency), and continuing education requirements for ALFAs across all states, and how states' requirements compare to national assisted living associations' suggested standards for entry-level and ongoing practice. Wide variation in ALFA qualifications are identified, with some states found to have extremely low qualification requirements.

An Inductively Powered Implantable System to Study the Gastrointestinal Electrophysiology in Freely Behaving Rodents.

Bioengineering (Basel)

October 2022

Bioinstrumentation and Medical Diagnostic Systems (BioMDS) Laboratory at the Department of Materials Science and Biomedical Engineering, The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Eau Claire, WI 54702, USA.

Chronic studies in the fasting and fed states of conscious subjects are fundamental for understanding the pathophysiological significance of functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders and motility dysfunctions. To study the electrophysiology of the GI tract in the long term, the development of gastric implants is essential. This paper presents the development of an implantable system capable of monitoring the bioelectrical activity of the gastric system and modulating the activity in freely behaving rodents.

Philanthropic Foundations' Discourse and Nursing's Future: Part II: A Critical Discourse Analysis of RWJF Future of Nursing Initiatives.

ANS Adv Nurs Sci

May 2023

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Nursing (Dr Kneipp); Department of Nursing, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (Dr Canales); and School of Nursing & Healthcare Leadership, University of Washington Tacoma (Dr Drevdahl).

Critical social scholarship highlights the power philanthropic foundations wield on the collective agency of groups, yet analyses specific to nursing are absent in the literature. In this second of a 2-part series, we employed critical discourse analysis to examine how control of enunciative privilege in Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's (RWJF) 2010 and 2020-2030 Future of Nursing (FON) initiatives challenge nursing's ability to enact its collective agency, particularly through professional nursing organizations. Findings are discussed within the context of nursing's self-regulatory privileges, history, and agentic obligations that are bestowed on the discipline by the greater public for the public good.

Philanthropic Foundations' Discourse and Nursing's Future: Part I: History and Agency.

ANS Adv Nurs Sci

May 2023

Sarah Frances Russell Distinguished Term Professor, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Nursing (Dr Kneipp); School of Nursing & Healthcare Leadership, University of Washington Tacoma (Dr Drevdahl); and Department of Nursing, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (Dr Canales).

In this article, we examine external agents' effect on nursing's professional evolution and the consequences for the discipline's collective agency, social contract, and self-regulation. Situated within Foucault's theories of power, we review how the power of organizations reaches into the fabric of everyday life and explore how philanthropic foundations have influenced a diverse array of disciplines, including nursing. Through a genealogic lens, we examine nursing history and professionalization and conclude with concerns surrounding nursing's exercise of its collective agency during one of the most significant, discipline-shaping activities of modern times-Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Future of Nursing initiatives.

The role of SNAP and WIC participation and racialized legal status in U.S. farmworker health.

PLoS One

August 2022

School of Biological and Population Health Sciences, College of Public Health and Human Sciences, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, United States of America.

Background: Policies that restrict access to and use of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Special Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) by legal status may disproportionately disadvantage particular racial and ethnic groups. While immigrant legal status, race, and ethnicity are recognized as independent social determinants of health, studies examining the extent to which legal status structures racial and ethnic health disparities are limited. Research is needed to identify factors that mitigate disparate health outcomes, such as SNAP and WIC.
