Participation in scientific conferences is a fundamental part of neuroscience and student training. Many conference opportunities have been cancelled, limited, or changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper is a conference report from a joint virtual 2021 meeting of two regional undergraduate neuroscience conferences, the Midwest/Great Lakes Undergraduate Research Symposium in Neuroscience (mGluRs) and the Midwest Regional Neuroscience Conference (MidBrains).

Background: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in heart failure (HF) patients are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. We hypothesized that HF reduces bioelectrical activity underlying peristalsis. In this study, we aimed to establish a method to capture and analyze slow waves (SW) in the small intestine in mice with HF.

Together, these traits -plant height, stem specific density, leaf area, leaf mass per area, leaf nitrogen content per dry mass, and diaspore (seed or spore) mass - define the primary axes of variation in plant form and function. The dataset is based on ca.

Purpose: The third International Cognitive-Communication Disorders Conference was held in early 2022, providing an opportunity for researchers and clinicians to discuss management of cognitive-communication disorders (CCDs). Presentations that addressed social discourse initiated broader conversations about implementing sociolinguistic methods in research and clinical contexts. Given the heterogeneity of CCDs and sociocultural contexts, a person-centered approach is needed.

In group-living species, cooperative tactics can offset asymmetries in resource-holding potential between individuals and alter the outcome of intragroup conflicts. Differences in the kinds of competitive pressures that males and females face might influence the benefits they gain from forming intragroup coalitions. We predicted that there would be a female bias in intragroup coalitions because females (1) are more like to live with kin than males are, and (2) compete over resources that are more readily shared than resources males compete over.

Purpose: This study examined the perceptions of health care experiences by individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) across the recovery continuum, regarding care received by a variety of health care providers following their TBI. It sought to identify whether perceptions differed across mild, moderate, and severe participants, as well as acute, subacute, and chronic recovery.
Method: Eighteen individuals with TBI were interviewed, using the Sydney Psychosocial Reintegration Scale-Second Edition (SPRS-2) and a semistructured interview about health care perceptions.

Resident acuity, Medicaid's increased role in funding assisted living, and the COVID-19 pandemic have brought increased attention to the regulatory environment of assisted living facilities (ALFs) and the responsibilities of ALF administrators (ALFAs) are growing increasingly complex. This study explores, describes, and compares the education (degree and assisted living-specific training), experience, exam (competency), and continuing education requirements for ALFAs across all states, and how states' requirements compare to national assisted living associations' suggested standards for entry-level and ongoing practice. Wide variation in ALFA qualifications are identified, with some states found to have extremely low qualification requirements.

IVC filters (IVCF) perform an important function in select patients that have venous blood clots. However, they are usually intended to be temporary, and significant delay in removal can have negative health consequences for the patient. Currently, all Interventional Radiology (IR) practices are tasked with tracking patients in whom IVCF are placed.

Chronic studies in the fasting and fed states of conscious subjects are fundamental for understanding the pathophysiological significance of functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders and motility dysfunctions. To study the electrophysiology of the GI tract in the long term, the development of gastric implants is essential. This paper presents the development of an implantable system capable of monitoring the bioelectrical activity of the gastric system and modulating the activity in freely behaving rodents.

Purpose: Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a concern that cyberbullying incidents would increase as youth were spending more time online. Additionally, reports emerged that Asian American citizens were being disproportionately targeted due to the purported origination of the disease. The current study explores whether cyberbullying incidents increased among adolescents overall-and Asian American youth in particular-since the onset of the coronavirus.

Critical social scholarship highlights the power philanthropic foundations wield on the collective agency of groups, yet analyses specific to nursing are absent in the literature. In this second of a 2-part series, we employed critical discourse analysis to examine how control of enunciative privilege in Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's (RWJF) 2010 and 2020-2030 Future of Nursing (FON) initiatives challenge nursing's ability to enact its collective agency, particularly through professional nursing organizations. Findings are discussed within the context of nursing's self-regulatory privileges, history, and agentic obligations that are bestowed on the discipline by the greater public for the public good.

Aims: The first aim was to learn what books and other media the study participants would recommend for inspiring people to let go of anger towards themselves or others and have a kinder intention towards themselves or others. The second aim was to learn which media had these effects on participants, and how. The third aim was to compile lists of cited media that can be available to nurses and other healthcare professionals who want to utilize media therapy for the facilitation of forgiveness.

DNA methylation is a process that can affect gene accessibility and therefore gene expression. In this study, a machine learning pipeline is proposed for the prediction of breast cancer and the identification of significant genes that contribute to the prediction. The current study utilized breast cancer methylation data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), specifically the TCGA-BRCA dataset.

In this article, we examine external agents' effect on nursing's professional evolution and the consequences for the discipline's collective agency, social contract, and self-regulation. Situated within Foucault's theories of power, we review how the power of organizations reaches into the fabric of everyday life and explore how philanthropic foundations have influenced a diverse array of disciplines, including nursing. Through a genealogic lens, we examine nursing history and professionalization and conclude with concerns surrounding nursing's exercise of its collective agency during one of the most significant, discipline-shaping activities of modern times-Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Future of Nursing initiatives.

Background: Policies that restrict access to and use of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Special Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) by legal status may disproportionately disadvantage particular racial and ethnic groups. While immigrant legal status, race, and ethnicity are recognized as independent social determinants of health, studies examining the extent to which legal status structures racial and ethnic health disparities are limited. Research is needed to identify factors that mitigate disparate health outcomes, such as SNAP and WIC.

Using molecular dynamics simulations, the protein-protein interactions of the receptor-binding domain of the wild-type and seven variants of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 spike protein and the peptidase domain of human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 were investigated. These variants are alpha, beta, gamma, delta, eta, kappa, and omicron. Using 100 ns simulation data, the residue interaction networks at the protein-protein interface were identified.

The Lake Michigan Ozone Study 2017 (LMOS 2017) was a collaborative multiagency field study targeting ozone chemistry, meteorology, and air quality observations in the southern Lake Michigan area. The primary objective of LMOS 2017 was to provide measurements to improve air quality modeling of the complex meteorological and chemical environment in the region. LMOS 2017 science questions included spatiotemporal assessment of nitrogen oxides (NO = NO + NO) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) emission sources and their influence on ozone episodes; the role of lake breezes; contribution of new remote sensing tools such as GeoTASO, Pandora, and TEMPO to air quality management; and evaluation of photochemical grid models.
