Objectives: Information-based decision making is important to modern medical practice. This report identifies learning objectives, teaching innovations, and student outcomes for teaching medical informatics (MI) in medical schools that participated in the Undergraduate Medical Education for the 21st Century (UME-21) curriculum project.
Methods: Project reports by the UME-21 schools were analyzed, and curricular content was classified in terms of the five categories for MI literacy adapted from the Medical School Objectives Project.

Research in cognitive development has highlighted important differences between conceptions of natural kinds and artifacts. One interpretation of the distinction is that natural kinds are categories one discovers, whereas artifactual kinds are invented. Four studies assessed whether children and adults saw categorization decisions as objective matters of fact or as invented conventions.

In C. elegans, germline mitosis depends on induction by the somatic distal tip cell (DTC) and on activity of the glp-1 gene. Using antibodies to GLP-1 protein, we have examined GLP-1 on western blots and by immunocytochemistry.

Direct intercellular signal transduction is achieved by the passage of small molecules through gap junctions (GJ). Previous studies in our laboratory showed that the liver tumor promoter phenobarbital (PB) reversibly decreases the abundance of the GJ protein connexin32 (Cx32) in both preneoplastic-altered hepatic foci and centrolobular hepatocytes (M. J.

The electrophoretic mobility of single-stranded DNA in denaturing polyacrylamide gel-filled capillaries is analyzed as a function of the applied electric field. The resultant mobility plots are complex functions of the fragment size and electric field. Traditionally, these plots are separated into three mobility regimens corresponding to Ogston sieving, reptation without stretching and reptation with stretching theories.

We have isolated overlapping cDNA clones from human and hamster libraries which comprise the entire coding sequences for the prepro-alpha 1(V) collagen chains of both species. The translated polypeptide has a signal peptide of 36 amino acids, a central triple helical domain of 338 uninterrupted Gly-X-Y triplets, and 266 amino acids which comprise the C-telopeptide and propeptide. The N-propeptide and telopeptide are comprised of 522 residues in humans and 524 residues in hamsters.

Tracheal blood flow before and after division of the segmental tracheal blood supply with and without application of a polypropylene spiral prosthesis was measured in dogs by radiolabeled microsphere injection. Ischemia of the central part of the trachea, from the mid-cervical to mid-thoracic regions, was observed immediately after division of the segmental tracheal blood supply with and without polypropylene spiral prosthesis application. On day 3, tracheal blood flow was significantly decreased in the central part of the trachea with and without polypropylene spiral prosthesis application.

Empirical computation of expected wealth is hampered by two problems: mortality risks vary in the population and over time; and observation of net estates for most cohorts is truncated, as some individuals in a cohort survive the calendar date on which observation is terminated. These two problems are solved in estimating cohort wealth for a sample of Wisconsin taxpayers. Hazard rate models of differential occupational mortality risks were estimated from the occupational information on the tax records.

The Newton-Raphson algorithm is an effective reconstruction method. However, it exhibits degraded performance for ill-conditioned problems, especially in the presence of measurement error. This paper uses the regularisation method to improve the system's conditioning, which stabilises the reconstruction method.
