Quantitative measurements of water content within a single cell are notoriously difficult. In this work, we introduce a single-shot optical method for tracking the intracellular water content, by mass and volume, of a single cell at video rate. We utilize quantitative phase imaging and a priori knowledge of a spherical cellular geometry, leveraging a two-component mixture model to compute the intracellular water content.

CancelRx is a health IT that automatically communicates medication discontinuations from the clinic electronic health record to the community pharmacy's dispensing platform, theoretically improving communication. CancelRx was implemented across a Midwest academic health system in October 2017.

Phase III studies suggest that certain adverse effects (AEs), possibly linked to pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) interactions may be therapy-limiting. We sought to identify these factors that contribute to treatment success and retention of therapy.

Background: Exposure to prescription opioids during adolescence is associated with an increased risk of future opioid misuse. The pervasive and growing impact of the opioid epidemic requires evidence-based, co-designed interventions targeted at adolescents. MedSMA℞T Families is an intervention tailored to educate adolescents and their families about opioid misuse prevention and consists of two parts: the MedSMA℞T: Adventures in PharmaCity videogame and the family medication safety plan (FMSP).

Objective: Methadone is used to prevent opioid iatrogenic withdrawal syndrome (IWS) in children, but the optimal dose and overlap time with an opioid infusion have not been elucidated. The purpose was to compare clinical manifestations among patients who developed opioid IWS within 24 hours (early) versus ≥24 hours (late) of fentanyl discontinuation when enteral methadone was initiated.
Design: A retrospective, descriptive study.
: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are among the most widely prescribed class of medications in the United States. Although effective in the treatment of acid related disease, inappropriate PPI use is prevalent, and long-term PPI use has been associated with adverse effects. This evaluation explores the novelty of a student-pharmacist directed PPI deprescribing telehealth program with the goals of (1) determining whether PPIs are appropriately prescribed in Veterans via remote student-led chart reviews, (2) identifying if a gap exists between urban and rural Veterans prescribed a PPI, and (3) assessing the feasibility of integrating student pharmacists into the PPI deprescribing process utilizing telehealth visits through a pilot study.

Severe exacerbations requiring hospitalization contribute a substantial portion of the morbidity and costs of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Triple therapy (inhaled corticosteroid + long-acting β-agonist + long-acting muscarinic antagonist) is a recommended option for patients who experience recurrent COPD exacerbations or persistent symptoms. Few real-world studies have specifically examined the effect of prompt initiation of triple therapy, specifically among patients hospitalized for a COPD exacerbation.

Introduction: Over 4 billion prescriptions are dispensed each year to patients in the United States, with the number of prescriptions continuing to increase. There is a growing recognition of pharmacists' potential in improving medication safety in community settings, in collaboration with primary care providers (PCPs). However, the nature of collaboration has not been well defined, and barriers and strategies are not articulated.

Background: African Americans are twice as likely to die from diabetes, compared to other racial and ethnic groups in the USA. Poor adherence to diabetes medications is common among African Americans and contributes to these disproportionally worse outcomes. A pilot study was conducted to determine the feasibility and acceptability of a peer-supported intervention targeting diabetes and medication beliefs, communication, and self-efficacy skills to enhance medication adherence among African Americans with type 2 diabetes.

In October 2017, the Food and Drug Administration announced a shortage of intravenous (IV) opioid medications. Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) are particularly vulnerable, as high amounts of IV opioid medications are standard therapy during vaso-occlusive crises (VOC). Our institution responded to the crises by implementing IV to oral (PO) conversions of opioid therapies and encouraging multimodal pain management with non-opioid medications.

To fill the gap in health research capacity-building efforts, we created the 'Virtual Library' (VL) - a web-based repository of context-relevant resources for health researchers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This paper describes the participatory process used to systematically develop the VL, and describes how our interprofessional team - representing both an LMIC (Nepal) and a high-income country (HIC) (USA, US) - engaged in shared meaning-making. A team of researchers and clinicians representing a range of subdisciplines from Nepal and the US created a replicable search strategy and standardized Resource Screening Guide (RSG) to systematically assess resources to be included within the VL.

Opioids are widely prescribed for moderate to severe pain in patients with acute illness, cancer pain, and chronic noncancer pain. However, long-term opioid use can cause opioid tolerance and opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH), contributing to the opioid misuse and addiction crisis. Strategies to mitigate opioid tolerance and OIH are needed to reduce opioid use and its sequelae.

Background: Youth of color growing up in poverty face many challenges that children from more affluent families never experience. These children often reside in disadvantaged neighborhoods with substandard housing, inadequate medical care, and under resourced schools. This places these children at risk for poor academic achievement, school dropout, abuse and neglect, behavioral and socioemotional problems, and physical health problems.

Objective: Patients identified as black and from disadvantaged backgrounds have a twofold higher hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) non-adherence, which contributes to worse lupus outcomes and disparities. Yet, most adherence interventions lack tailored strategies for racially and socioeconomically diverse patients who face unique challenges with HCQ. We aimed to examine a broadly representative group of patients with SLE and physician perspectives on HCQ adherence and adherence strategies to redesign an adherence intervention.
