Self-insertion of foreign objects into the lower urinary tract is an uncommon presentation with diverse underlying motivations, including psychiatric illness, sexual gratification, intoxication, and perceived contraception. A wide variety of objects may be inserted, leading to varied symptom presentations. We report the case of a 51-year-old male with a history of post-traumatic stress disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and prior self-mutilation, who presented to the ED following self-insertion of multiple foreign objects into the lower urinary tract.

Plants direct substantial amounts of carbon toward the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids (AAAs), particularly phenylalanine to produce lignin and other phenylpropanoids. The topical elastase murine model of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is enhanced when combined with ß-aminopropionitrile (BAPN)-supplemented drinking water to reliably produce true infrarenal aneurysms with behaviors that mimic human AAAs. Topically applying elastase to the adventitia of the infrarenal aorta causes structural damage to the elastic layers of the aortic wall and initiates aneurysmal dilation. Co-administering BAPN, a lysyl oxidase inhibitor, promotes sustained wall degeneration by reducing collagen and elastin crosslinking.

The long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) CARMN (cardiac mesoderm enhancer associated noncoding RNA) is a highly conserved lncRNA that expresses primarily by smooth muscle cells (SMCs). Recent literature demonstrates that CARMN plays a critical role in the differentiation and maintaining of the contractile state of vascular SMCs. Because aortic SMCs show diminished contractile proteins in abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), we hypothesize that the expression of CARMN is downregulated in the aortic wall affected by aneurysm.

Background: Published reports suggest that exclusion of antegrade hypogastric artery flow may have deleterious effects on erectile function after abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. Off-label and open surgical hybrid procedures and, more recently, purpose-built branched devices have been developed to maintain antegrade pelvic perfusion in patients undergoing endovascular repair. Aromatic aminotransferases (Aro ATs) are pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzymes that catalyze the transamination reactions of an aromatic amino acid (AAA) or a keto acid. Aro ATs are involved in biosynthesis or degradation of AAAs and play important functions in controlling the production of plant hormones and secondary metabolites, such as auxin, tocopherols, flavonoids, and lignin. Most Aro ATs show substrate promiscuity and can accept multiple aromatic and non-aromatic amino and keto acid substrates, which complicates and limits our understanding of their in planta functions.
