Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant tumor of bone usually occurring in young adolescent and children. This disease has a poor prognosis, because of the metastases in the period of tumor progression, which are usually developed previous to the clinical diagnosis. In this paper, a 2000-year-old ancient bone remain with osteogenic sarcoma was analyzed searching for tumor biomarkers which are closely related to this disease.

Despite newly developed antiepileptic drugs to suppress epileptic symptoms, approximately one third of patients remain drug refractory. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop more effective therapeutic approaches to treat epilepsy. A great deal of evidence suggests that endogenous nucleosides, such as adenosine (Ado), guanosine (Guo), inosine (Ino) and uridine (Urd), participate in the regulation of pathomechanisms of epilepsy.

Elements of the nucleoside system (nucleoside levels, 5'-nucleotidases (5'NTs) and other nucleoside metabolic enzymes, nucleoside transporters and nucleoside receptors) are unevenly distributed in the brain, suggesting that nucleosides have region-specific functions in the human brain. Indeed, adenosine (Ado) and non-Ado nucleosides, such as guanosine (Guo), inosine (Ino) and uridine (Urd), modulate both physiological and pathophysiological processes in the brain, such as sleep, pain, memory, depression, schizophrenia, epilepsy, Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Interactions have been demonstrated in the nucleoside system between nucleoside levels and the activities of nucleoside metabolic enzymes, nucleoside transporters and Ado receptors in the human brain.

Endogenous auxins and cytokinins were quantitated in 24 axenic microalgal strains from the Chlorophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae, Ulvophyceae, and Charophyceae. These strains were in an exponential growth phase, being harvested on day 4. Acutodesmus acuminatus Mosonmagyaróvár Algal Culture Collection-41 (MACC) produced the highest biomass and Chlorococcum ellipsoideum MACC-712 the lowest biomass.

Pharmacological and functional data suggest the existence of uridine (Urd) receptors in the central nervous system (CNS). In the present study, simultaneous extracellular single unit recording and microiontophoretic injection of the pyrimidine nucleoside Urd was used to provide evidence for the presence of Urd-sensitive neurons in the thalamus and the cerebral cortex of Long Evans rats. Twenty-two neurons in the thalamus (24% of recorded neurons) and 17 neurons in the cortex (55%) responded to the direct iontophoresis of Urd.

Background/aims: The association of bone mass with body composition, bone turnover markers and gonadal steroids was examined in Hungarian children during pre- and midpuberty.
Methods: Two hundred and thirty-seven 7- to 16-year-old subjects (56% girls) were investigated. Bone mineral density (BMD), fat mass and total and appendicular lean mass were estimated with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (Lunar Prodigy).

A large database of invasive forest pathogens (IFPs) was developed to investigate the patterns and determinants of invasion in Europe. Detailed taxonomic and biological information on the invasive species was combined with country-specific data on land use, climate, and the time since invasion to identify the determinants of invasiveness, and to differentiate the class of environments which share territorial and climate features associated with a susceptibility to invasion. IFPs increased exponentially in the last four decades.

Recently it was revealed that the absence-like epileptic activity of the WAG/Rij (Wistar Albino Glaxo/Rijswijk) rat is associated with depression-like behavioural symptoms. Whether these depressive-like symptoms are accompanying epileptic activity (manifested in spike-wave discharges, SWDs, in the EEG) or whether they are causative for each other are open questions. Neonatally administered tricyclic antidepressant clomipramine is a well characterized animal model of major depression.

Ultrathin films of aligned cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were assembled on mica supports by using electric field-assisted shear. The relationship between polarization gradients and strain mechanics of the obtained films was examined by monitoring their deflection with an atomic force microscope operated in contact mode. The piezoelectric response of the films was ascribed to the collective contribution of the asymmetric crystalline structure of the cellulose crystals.

An exact wavelength separation of the spectrum cannot be accomplished when utilizing common ultraviolet (UV) light sources, so the dependence of photodegradation on wavelength cannot be done directly. The photodegradation of wood resulted in by laser irradiation on various wavelengths can be studied by comparing the changes in the DRIFT spectra of various wood materials. The analysis of the difference spectrum is a widely used method to investigate the changes in the infrared spectrum.

Topo-optical staining reactions were used to investigate the structures of bacterial cellulose, insect chitosan and alginic acid from brown algae. Polysaccharide complexes, glycosaminoglycans and sulfate groups were presented and demonstrated selectively. Chitosan and alginic acid are structurally similar to glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which are constituents of human amyloid fibrils.

Wheat is grown in most of the Indian and Chinese regions and after harvesting, the remaining straw offers considerable promise as a renewable source most suitable for papermaking and as a pulping resource. Delignification of wheat straw offers ample scope for energy conservation by way of the application of the process intensification principles. The present work reviews the pretreatment techniques available for improving the effectiveness of the conventional approach for polysaccharide component separation, softening and delignification.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are known to be activated in the brain by epileptic seizures and elevated MMP-9 activity has been found in a genetic model of generalized absence epilepsy (Wistar Albino Glaxo Rijswijk/WAG/Rij rats). In this study we posed the question, whether MMP inhibitory dose of doxycycline (20mg/kg) could affect the spike-wave-discharges (SWDs) of the WAG/Rij rat. We found that intraperitoneal (i.

The effect of centrally administered LPS on the absence-like epileptic activity is not known, however despite the important differences in inflammatory mechanisms. To examine the effect of centrally administered LPS on the pathological synchronization we intracerebroventricularly (i.
