Genomic analysis of O1 isolates from cholera cases, Europe, 2022.

Euro Surveill

September 2024

Institut Pasteur, Université Paris Cité, Unité des Bactéries pathogènes entériques, Centre National de Référence des Vibrions et du choléra, Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers confirmed that the O1 isolates from these cases belonged to the seventh pandemic El Tor lineage (7PET) and identified virulence characteristics, antimicrobial resistance, and phylogenetic relationships among the strains.
  • * The study found that 46 of 49 high-quality genomes belonged to the 7PET lineage, with a dominant subgroup likely contributing to the rise in cholera cases; it emphasized the need for whole genome sequencing in high-income countries to track the evolution of strains and antimicrobial resistance.

Acute coronary syndrome due to a non-atherosclerotic, non-traumatic, or iatrogenic-induced spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare clinical condition that affects mostly young women of reproductive age. In this case, we present a 36-week-pregnant, 35-year-old G2P1 woman, with no previous medical history, who was admitted to our hospital with premature pre-labor contractions. During her hospitalization, she underwent a coronary artery percutaneous angiography revealing SCAD of the three coronary vessels, after an episode of acute-onset chest pain, tachypnea, EKG alterations, cardiac enzyme elevation, and bilateral pleural effusions.

Clin Nutr ESPEN

October 2024

Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Granada, Granada, Spain; CIBER de Epidemiología y Salud Pública (CIBERESP-Spain), Madrid, Spain; Instituto de Investigación Biosanitaria de Granada (IBS.GRANADA), Granada, Spain.

Background: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) widely considered the gold standard for evidence-based healthcare may be limited in their clinical usefulness in lifestyle interventions for adults with overweight, obesity, or metabolic syndrome.

Objective: In this systematic review of lifestyle intervention RCTs we delineated trial usefulness.

Methods: Following prospective registration in PROSPERO (CRD4202347896), we conducted a comprehensive search across Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library databases, covering the period from inception to December 2023.

Objectives: To assess the perceptions of patients with rheumatic diseases about the doctor-patient relationship and the impact on their treatment and their quality of life.

Methods: A quantitative study collecting data from patients with rheumatic diseases using the following tools: (a) the Doctor-Patient Relationship Assessment Questionnaire-16 (DoPRAQ-16), assessed the quality of doctor-patient relationship, (b) the Short Form 36 (SF-36) assessed the quality of life of patients, and (c) the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), assessed the functional ability of patients. From the statistical analysis, it appears that there is no linear correlation between the DoPRAQ-16 scales and the dimensions of the SF-36 Health Survey, except for the scale of negative emotions and the dimension of Physical Functioning.

Identification of Small-Molecule Antagonists Targeting the Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone Receptor (GHRHR).

J Chem Inf Model

September 2024

Centre for Neuroendocrinology, Department of Immunology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria, Private Bag X323, Gezina, Pretoria 0031, South Africa.

The growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor (GHRHR) belongs to Class B1 of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Class B1 GPCR peptides such, as growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), have been proposed to bind in a two-step model, where first the C-terminal region of the peptide interacts with the extracellular domain of the receptor and, subsequently, the N-terminus interacts with the seven transmembrane domain of the receptor, resulting in activation. The GHRHR has recently been highlighted as a promising drug target toward several types of cancer and has been shown to be overexpressed in prostate, breast, pancreatic, and ovarian cancer.

Several individual-based social deprivation and vulnerability indices have been developed to measure the negative impact of low socioeconomic status on health outcomes. However, their variables and measurable characteristics have not been unequivocally assessed. A comprehensive database literature scoping review was performed to identify all individual-based social deprivation and vulnerability indices.

  • The study examined 3,661 individuals suspected of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Greece over a 16-year period (2005-2020) to analyze the seasonality, demographics, and genotypes of VL cases.
  • Out of the cases analyzed, 219 were diagnosed as definite VL, predominantly affecting older adults (≥65 years) with symptoms like fever, splenomegaly, and hepatomegaly.
  • The research identified the circulation of ITS type A as the genotypic type present in Greece's VL cases for the first time, also noting a seasonal pattern with peaks in February and June.

Background/objectives: Failure to thrive (FTT) is mostly caused by insufficient consumption of nutrient-rich food, recurrent infections like diarrhea and intestinal worms, substandard caregiving practices, and limited availability of health and other vital services. Furthermore, there was a correlation between the educational level of mothers and the occurrence of FTT in children aged 6-12 months. Thus, the objective of the current research is twofold: (i) to investigate other factors related to FTT and (ii) to evaluate the impact of them on FTT in Sub-Saharan African countries and their urban areas.

Article Synopsis
  • Adenomyosis is a condition where endometrial tissue grows within the uterine muscle (myometrium), leading to symptoms like bleeding, swelling, and pain due to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle.
  • The condition can manifest either diffusely or as localized areas and is characterized by islands of benign endometrial glands surrounded by connective tissue, often with signs of recent or chronic bleeding.
  • Pregnancy tends to improve symptoms by inhibiting ovulation and causing hormonal and immune system changes, but adenomyosis can still lead to complications such as abnormal placentation and increased risk of bleeding during pregnancy.

This study aimed to explore the capacity of immobilized lipases on the acetylation of six aglycon flavonoids, namely myricetin, quercetin, luteolin, naringenin, fisetin and morin. For this purpose, lipase B from (CaLB) and lipase from (TLL) were immobilized onto the surface of ZnOFe nanoparticles derived from an aqueous olive leaf extract. Various factors affecting the conversion of substrates and the formation of monoesterified and diesterified products, such as the amount of biocatalyst and the molar ratio of the substrates and reaction solvents were investigated.

Introduction: Women, and mainly pregnant ones, have been always highly vulnerable to domestic violence/intimate partner violence (DV/IPV) throughout their lives. Covid-19 pandemic brought new unprecedented living conditions that raised the rates of DV during pregnancy. Investigating the association between Covid-19 and DV in pregnant women may help government and community groups seeking to reduce DV/IPV in vulnerable populations in order to better understand the prevalence of this phenomenon and its associated factors and thus find ways to ensure control and stop domestic violence, as the society and health care systems are still disorganized in the way they deal with the DV against pregnant women.
