Urbanization of estuaries drastically changed existing shorelines and bathymetric contours, in turn modifying habitat for marine foundational species that host critical biodiversity. And yet we lack approaches to characterize a significant fraction of the biota that inhabit these ecosystems on time scales that align with rates of urbanization. Four new tetradentate Schiff-base ligands were prepared from the 1 : 2 condensation of 1,3-diaminopropane and either 2-thiazolecarboxaldehyde (L2thiazole), 4-thiazolecarboxaldehyde (L4thiazole), 4-oxazolecarboxaldehyde (L4), or 5-bromopyridine-2-aldehyde (L5Br-pyridine), and complexed with [Fe(NCS)(pyridine)] to give four monometallic Fe complexes, [Fe(Lheterocycle)(NCS)]. Structural characterisation shows the expected octahedral Fe centres in all cases, with Lheterocycle occupying the equatorial plane and the two thiocyanate ligands to each other, resulting in an N coordination sphere. Solid state magnetic measurements showed that the two complexes with the thiazole-based ligands exhibit the beginning of a spin transition above 300 K, with = 350 K for [Fe(L4thiazole)(NCS)] and 400 K for [Fe(L2thiazole)(NCS)], whereas the 4-oxazole-based ligand gives [Fe(L4)(NCS)] which remains high spin at all measured temperatures (50-400 K).

This study introduces a novel approach in the realm of liquid biopsies, employing a 3D Mueller-matrix (MM) image reconstruction technique to analyze dehydrated blood smear polycrystalline structures. Our research centers on exploiting the unique optical anisotropy properties of blood proteins, which undergo structural alterations at the quaternary and tertiary levels in the early stages of diseases such as cancer. The clinical use of many potent anticancer agents is limited by their non-selective toxicity to healthy tissue. One of these examples is vorinostat (SAHA), a pan histone deacetylase inhibitor, which shows high cytotoxicity with limited discrimination for cancerous over healthy cells. Determining electrocatalytic activity for reactions that involve reactants with limited solubility presents a significant challenge due to the reduced mass-transport to the electrocatalyst surface. This limitation is seen in important reactions such as the oxygen reduction reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, and carbon dioxide reduction reaction. We introduce a new approach, which we call scanning bubble electrochemical microscopy, to enable the detection and high-resolution mapping of electrocatalytic activity with low-solubility reactants at high mass-transport rates.

Eliciting an antihapten antibody response to vaccination typically requires the use of constructs where multiple copies of the hapten are covalently attached to a larger carrier molecule. The carrier is required to elicit T cell help via presentation of peptide epitopes on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules; as such, attachment to full-sized proteins, alone or in a complex, is generally used to account for the significant MHC diversity in humans. While such carrier-based vaccines have proven extremely successful, particularly in protecting against bacterial diseases, they can be challenging to manufacture, and repeated use can be compromised by pre-existing immunity against the carrier.

Sexual reproduction of reef-building corals is vital for coral reef ecosystem recovery. Corals allocate limited energy to growth and reproduction, when being under environmental disturbance, which ultimately shapes the community population dynamics. Although a diagnosis of a life-limiting cancer is likely to evoke emotions, such as fear, panic and anxiety, for some people it can also provide an opportunity to live life differently. This article is based on research undertaken in Aotearoa New Zealand on the topic of exceptional cancer trajectories. Eighty-one participants who had been identified as living with a cancer diagnosis longer than clinically expected were interviewed, along with 25 people identified by some of the participants as supporters in their journey.
