Improving the Reliability and Accuracy of Population Receptive Field Measures Using a Logarithmically Warped Stimulus.

The population receptive field method, which measures the region in visual space that elicits a BOLD signal in a voxel in retinotopic cortex, is a powerful tool for investigating the functional organization of human visual cortex with fMRI (Dumoulin & Wandell, 2008). However, recent work has shown that population receptive field (pRF) estimates for early retinotopic visual areas can be biased and unreliable, especially for voxels representing the fovea. Here, we show that a 'log-bar' stimulus that is logarithmically warped along the eccentricity dimension produces more reliable estimates of pRF size and location than the traditional moving bar stimulus.

A gut-brain axis exists, and it is intricately connected to early life feeding and nutritional exposures.

Making goals count: A theory-informed approach to on-shift learning goals.

Supervisors often ask emergency medicine trainees for their learning goals at the start of a clinical shift, though they may do so without considering the reasons for this practice. Recognizing the underlying rationale for voicing on-shift learning goals and proactively considering solutions for some of the associated challenges can help learners and supervisors employ this practice to its full potential. Goal articulation is rooted in educational principles such as self-regulated learning, targeted performance feedback, and collaborative relationships between learner and supervisor.

Objective: To determine the frequency of physical therapy (PT) services and potential disparities in receiving PT among Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries with a history of spine pain who live in long-term care (LTC) settings.

Design: Secondary cross-sectional analysis of Medicare administrative data on beneficiaries with a history of spine pain from 2017-2019. We identified LTC residents using a validated algorithm, then identified and described PT episodes that occurred after the LTC index date.

Observation of super-Nernstian proton-coupled electron transfer and elucidation of nature of charge carriers in a multiredox conjugated polymer.

Nernstian proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is a fundamental process central to many physical and biological systems, such as electrocatalysis, enzyme operation, DNA biosynthesis, pH-/bio-sensors, and electrochemical energy storage devices. We report herein the discovery of super-Nernstian PCET behavior with two protons per electron transferred in the electrochemical doping of a redox conjugated polymer, phenazine-substituted ladder poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL-P), in aqueous electrolyte. We show that the super-Nernstian response originates from existence of multiredox centers that have a gradient of p on the conjugated polymer.

Background: Studies reporting on the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest and/or death (SCA/D) in athletes commonly lack methodological and reporting rigor, which has implications for screening and preventative policy in sport. To date, there are no tools designed for assessing study quality in studies investigating the incidence of SCA/D in athletes.

MigraineTracker: Examining Patient Experiences with Goal-Directed Self-Tracking for a Chronic Health Condition.

Self-tracking and personal informatics offer important potential in chronic condition management, but such potential is often undermined by difficulty in aligning self-tracking tools to an individual's goals. Informed by prior proposals of goal-directed tracking, we designed and developed MigraineTracker, a prototype app that emphasizes explicit expression of goals for migraine-related self-tracking. We then examined migraine patient experiences in a deployment study for an average of 12+ months, including a total of 50 interview sessions with 10 patients working with 3 different clinicians.

Nationwide trends of balloon pulmonary angioplasty and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (2012-2019).

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a sequela of a pulmonary embolus that occurs in approximately 1%-3% of patients. Pulmonary thromboendoarterectomy (PTE) can be a curative procedure, but balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) has emerged as an option for poor surgical candidates. We used the National Inpatient Sample to query patients who underwent PTE or BPA between 2012 and 2019 with CTEPH.

Recent developments within the IUCN and the Convention on Biological Diversity have affirmed the increasingly key role that effective population size ( ) and the effective size: census size ratio ( /) play in applied conservation and management of global biodiversity. This paper reviews and synthesizes information regarding the definition of and demographic and genetic methods for estimating effective size, census size, and their ratio. Emphasis is on single-generation estimates of contemporary /, which are the most informative for practical applications.
