Background In England online services in general practice encompass a range of provision from ordering repeat medication to having a consultation. Some groups of individuals may find accessing and/or using such services difficult and may require 'digital facilitation', that is the range of processes, procedures, and personnel which seeks to support NHS patients in their uptake and use of online services. Aim To gain insight, from the perspective of general practice staff and patients/carers, into how and why digital facilitation might lead to benefits, and the key processes involved in supporting patients to use online services.

In the United States, individuals with disabilities and those aged ≥65 can supplement their Medicare with so-called stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. Beneficiaries can switch their stand-alone prescription drug plans annually, but most do not. Indirect evidence has raised concerns that non-switchers do not even make plan comparisons (labeled "inattention"), but direct evidence is scarce.

Background: People hospitalised for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have elevated incidence of diabetes. However, it is unclear whether this is due to shared risk factors, confounding or stress hyperglycaemia in response to acute illness.

Methods: We analysed a multicentre prospective cohort study (PHOSP-COVID) of people ≥18 years discharged from NHS hospitals across the United Kingdom following COVID-19.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) has significant socio-economic and welfare impacts on the cattle industry in parts of the world. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, disease control is complicated by the presence of infection in wildlife, principally the European badger. Control strategies tend to be applied to whole populations, but better identification of key sources of transmission, whether individuals or groups, could help inform more efficient approaches.

Spatial-temporal regulation of the prostanoid receptor EP2 co-ordinates PGE2-mediated cAMP signaling in decidualizing human endometrium.

iScience

November 2024

Institute of Reproductive and Developmental Biology, Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction, Imperial College London, London W12 0NN, UK.

Decidualization denotes the differentiation of endometrial stromal cells into specialized decidual cells, essential for embryo implantation and pregnancy. The process requires coordination of progesterone and cAMP signaling, which converge on downstream transcription factors. PGE2 and relaxin, acting, respectively, through Gαs-coupled GPCRs EP2 and RXFP1, are putative candidates for generating cAMP in differentiating stromal cells.

Incorporating healthcare access and equity in economic evaluations: a scoping review of guidelines.

Int J Technol Assess Health Care

November 2024

Academic Unit of Health Economics, Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, University of Leeds, Leeds, UK.

Background: International development agendas increasingly push for access to healthcare for all through universal healthcare coverage. Health economic evaluations and health technology assessment (HTA) could provide evidence to support this but do not routinely incorporate consideration of equitable access.

Methods: We undertook an international scoping review of health economic evaluation and HTA guidelines to examine how well issues of healthcare access and equity are represented, evidence recommendations, and gaps in current guidance to support evidence generation in this area.

Despite the existence of established standards and guidelines for pathology reporting, many pathology reports are still written in unstructured free text. Extracting information from these reports and formatting it according to a standard is crucial for consistent interpretation. Automated information extraction from unstructured pathology reports is a challenging task, as it requires accurately interpreting medical terminologies and context-dependent details.

December 2024

Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, University of California Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA 90095 USA; Centre for Mechanobiochemical Cell Biology, Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, Coventry CV4 7AL, UK.

Much is known about the importance of macrophages for regulating diverse aspects of organismal physiology, alongside their essential roles in inflammation. Relatively unexplored are the processes influencing macrophages' and monocytes' ability to invade into the tissues where they carry out these functions. Drosophila plasmatocytes, also called hemocytes, show similarities to vertebrate macrophages in their function and their molecular specification; they have recently been shown to also infiltrate into tissues during development and inflammation.
