Human autoantibodies and corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH)-specific antibodies have been used in a double-labelling immunofluorescence technique to demonstrate that immunoreactive CRH structures are co-localised with immunostaining produced by double stranded DNA-specific human autoantibodies within the nucleus of cultured ovarian cells of Chinese hamsters (CHO-K1). This co-localisation was confirmed using confocal microscopy. A metabolic labelling technique was used to investigate the role of the cytoskeleton in mediating nuclear translocation of proCRH within stably transfected CHO-K1 cells and showed that microtubule and actin disrupting agents had no effect upon the nuclear translocation of proCRH.

It gives the same results with live and fixed cells. The introduction of CEN14-based plasmids into haploid strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae resulted in reduced proliferation rates and significantly smaller (20%) cell size than in untransformed control cells. This could be useful to those yeast biotechnology processes that require high levels of gene expression but little or no yeast growth and proliferation. In diploids similar plasmids caused asporogeny, which was possibly a consequence of the reduced cell size.

Byssinosis is an occupational lung disease in textile mill workers exposed to the respirable dusts of cotton, hemp, and flax. This study investigated the influence of aqueous extracts from these dusts on overall lung permeability in the guinea pig as an index of respiratory epithelial damage. Recall of the final item in a spoken list is impaired by the presentation of a spoken to-be-ignored item following the list. The nature of the processes responsible for the stimulus suffix effect (as well as its magnitude) can be varied by manipulating the intrinsic characteristics of the relationship between the final list (target) item and suffix. A series of experiments show that systematic manipulation of both typicality of same-category membership of target-item and suffix (Experiment 1), and degree of synonymity between target-item and suffix (Experiment 2) result in differential attenuation in the magnitude of the suffix effect.

The perceived blur of moving images is less than expected given the sluggish temporal response of the visual system. This suggests that a motion deblurring mechanism may exist to preserve the positional acuity and sharpness of moving images. Furthermore, when sequences of blurred stills are presented, observers report that the moving image is in sharp focus raising the possibility that there is a mechanism which may sharpen the appearance of moving, blurred images.

The effects of sublethal concentrations of the membrane-active agent chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) on the growth rate and sporulation of Bacillus subtilis vegetative MB2 cells have been investigated. CHG increased the mean generation time (Mgt) of vegetative cells in casein medium. It also affected spore development: as CHG concentrations increased, spore index (SI) values decreased and sensitivity to both toluene and heat increased.

Three experiments were conducted using a repetition priming paradigm: Auditory word or environmental sound stimuli were identified by subjects in a pre-test phase, which was followed by a perceptual identification task using either sounds or words in the test phase. Identification of an environmental sound was facilitated by prior presentation of the same sound, but not by prior presentation of a spoken label (Experiments 1 and 2). Similarly, spoken word identification was facilitated by previous presentation of the same word, but not when the word had been used to label an environmental sound (Experiment 1).

The Achilles tendon inserts onto the calcaneus, and the retrocalcaneal bursa intervenes between it and the bone immediately proximal to the enthesis. In the ox cornea, more than half of the non-diffusible, matrix negative charge is derived from the binding of free chloride ions. Because the magnitude of the net matrix charge is the dominant factor which determines the degree of stromal swelling, we investigated whether this phenomenon, stromal chloride binding, also occurs in human corneal stroma. Intrastromal ion concentrations were measured with radio-isotopes when human (outdated Eye Bank) corneas or (fresh) bovine corneas, physically clamped to maintain a constant hydration, were incubated in buffered 154 mM NaCl.

The development of fibrocartilage in rat lumbar intervertebral discs has been correlated with an immunohistochemical analysis of the changing distribution of extracellular matrix components. Disc anlagen were first recognised by embryonic day 14 as segmental cell condensations. By E16, the notochord formed a series of bulges, each representing a future nucleus pulposus, and the annulus fibrosus had differentiated in the disc anlagen.
