Focused ultrasound (FUS) thalamotomy is an emerging treatment for tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease (PD). We report the first postmortem neuropathologic study of FUS thalamotomy in a 68-year-old man with tremor-dominant PD, which was performed seven months before he died. Although the peak voxel temperature at the target was <54 °C, his tremor improved on intraoperative and postoperative assessments.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is an imaging modality applied in a broad field of medical specialties for diagnostic uses, guidance during biopsy procedures and ablation therapies and sonoporation therapy. Appropriate training and assessment of theoretical and practical competencies are recommended before practicing CEUS, but no validated assessment tools exist. Intra-operative contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a relatively standardized procedure in brain neurosurgery, but it is still underused in spinal cord and intramedullary tumor evaluation. We reviewed and analyzed the intra-operative data from a surgical series of patients harboring intramedullary spinal cord tumors who underwent surgery under CEUS guidance. CEUS was performed in 12 patients (age range: 13-55 y); all lesions had ill-defined boundaries or peritumoral cysts at preliminary intra-operative B-mode ultrasound.

Many forensic laboratories face growing demands for the processing of DNA evidence from sexual assault investigations. In these cases, evidence collected from the crime scene or from the victim in the form of a Sexual Assault and Evidence Collection Kit (SAECK) typically contains a mixture of cells from at least two donors. Isolation of DNA contributions to link a sample to an alleged offender requires precise chemical treatment of each sample with the goal of separating epithelial cells from non-sperm cells.

Methods: Clinical and radiosurgical data were prospectively collected and analyzed in patients with neuropathic pain who underwent Gamma Knife central lateral thalamotomy. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is an emerging modality for cancer treatment which combines ultrasound with sonosensitizers to produce a localized cytotoxic effect. This update was performed with extended followup for 3 years to determine potential differences between the approaches. Background: Maximizing extent of resection (EOR) and reducing residual tumor volume (RTV) while preserving neurological functions is the main goal in the surgical treatment of gliomas.
