Two major types of defective vectors have been derived from herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), non-replicative genomic vectors (nrHSV-1), and amplicon vectors. This review recapitulates the main features of both vector types and summarizes recent improvements in our understanding of virus/vector biology, particularly with regard to the critical role played by the overpowering of antiviral cellular defenses and the epigenetic control of viral gene expression. Over the past years, significant breakthroughs in vector design, genetic engineering, and HSV-1 biology have accelerated the development of nrHSV-1 vectors.

Background: BK-polyomavirus (BKpyV) nephropathy (BKVN) is associated with end-stage kidney disease in kidney and non-kidney solid organ transplantation, with no curative treatment.

Case Presentation: A 45-year-old woman with a past medical history of double lung transplantation subsequently developed end-stage kidney disease, of undetermined origin. One month after receiving a kidney transplant, a diagnosis of early BKVN was suspected, and in retrospect was a reasonable cause for the loss of her native kidneys.

Effect of a comfort scale compared with a pain numerical rate scale on opioids consumption in postanaesthesia care unit: the COMFORT study.

Br J Anaesth

October 2024

University of Rennes, CHU Rennes, Inserm, COSS1242, CIC 1414, Anesthesia and Intensive Care Department, Rennes, France. Electronic address:

Background: The way that pain is assessed in the PACU could impact on postoperative pain and analgesic consumption. However, there is currently no evidence to support this speculation. The authors hypothesised that using a comfort scale reduces postoperative opioid consumption when compared with a standard numerical rating scale (NRS) to evaluate pain in the PACU.

Transcript analysis of uterus transplant cervical biopsies using the Banff Human Organ Transplant panel.

Am J Transplant

August 2024

Department of Clinical Pathology, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Region Västra Götaland, Gothenburg, Sweden; Institute of Biomedicine, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Uterus transplantation is being more widely implemented in clinical practice. Monitoring of rejection is routinely done for cervical biopsies and is dependent on histopathological assessment, as rejections are clinically silent and nonhistological biomarkers are missing. Until this gap is filled, it is important to corroborate the histopathological diagnosis of rejection through independent methods such as gene expression analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how different anesthesia techniques (general anesthesia vs. non-general anesthesia) affect outcomes in mechanical thrombectomy for stroke, with a focus on the location of the blood clot.
  • Researchers analyzed data from nearly 2800 patients, finding that general anesthesia did not lead to better overall outcomes but was linked to increased risk of complications in some cases.
  • The results suggest that the type of anesthesia used during mechanical thrombectomy should be chosen based on the specific location of the occlusion to enhance safety and effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore treatment strategies for tandem occlusions (TOs) during emergent carotid stenting in Italy, highlighting uncertainties in the best approach despite benefits from mechanical thrombectomy.
  • A survey of 66 centers yielded a response rate of 84.8%, revealing that most prefer a retrograde approach with a closed-cell stent and single antiplatelet therapy during deployment.
  • The findings indicate that practices for managing TOs are inconsistent across the Italian neurovascular community, emphasizing the need for more evidence to establish a standardized treatment protocol.
