Background: Nurses play a crucial role in caring for families of ill individuals in care, requiring high-quality relational and communication skills to care for them. Yet these skills remain underutilized, leading to reported issues of inadequate inclusion and communication. Education is crucial to enhance nurses' competencies in caring for families and informal caregivers.

Orofacial trauma (OFT) occurs frequently in children and requires thorough evaluation not only by paediatric dentists but also by all specialists involved in emergency services, particularly in cases involving children under 3 years of age, given their inability to directly participate in clinical-anamnestic evaluations. Addressing early childhood orofacial trauma resulting from maltreatment, this study explores the key role played by various healthcare professionals, including paediatric dentists, general dentists, maxillofacial surgeons, dental hygienists, and paediatricians, in the optimal management of these cases. In the event of trauma due to suspected or confirmed mistreatment, it is essential that all healthcare workers involved have precise knowledge of the appropriate course of action from both a clinical and legal point of view, guaranteeing maximum protection for the young patient.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to examine COVID-19 vaccine uptake among pregnant women in their 2nd and 3rd trimesters in Trentino, Italy, and identify factors affecting their vaccination decisions.
  • Conducted as an observational study, it analyzed data from 4,772 pregnant women through linked health records to estimate prevalence.
  • Findings show that only 33.3% were vaccinated in the specified period, with lower uptake linked to factors like citizenship, education, occupation, and age, highlighting a need for targeted vaccination outreach for vulnerable groups.

Background: Existing research demonstrates the association of shorter leukocyte telomere length with increased risk of age-related health outcomes including cardiovascular diseases. However, the direct causality of these relationships has not been definitively established. Cardiovascular aging at an organ level may be captured using image-derived phenotypes of cardiac anatomy and function.

Background: Systemic chronic inflammation plays a role in the pathophysiology of both heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease. This study aimed to investigate whether serum hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) levels were associated with the future risk of heart failure (HF) hospitalization in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and a normal left ventricular ejection fraction.

Methods And Results: The study enrolled consecutive individuals with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and normal left ventricular ejection fraction who underwent coronary angiography for suspected coronary heart disease.

The paper proposes a theoretical framework, based on a literature review, that analyzes the links between COVID-19 impacts and supply chain risk mitigation strategies, investigating the role of digitalization as a potential key resource to improve the effectiveness of supply chain resilience. Then, the paper empirically tests the framework through a hybrid causal mapping technique using the frameworks of Interpretive Structural Modelling and Bayesian Belief Networks methods to support supply chain decision making approaches. The findings of this paper can support managers in developing simple and traciable models for assessing interdependences among supply chain disruption sources and to invest effectively in resilience strategies.

Background Differences in the impact of contrast medium on the development of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) or a coronary angiography/percutaneous coronary intervention (CA/PCI) have not been previously investigated. Methods and Results Patients treated with TAVI or elective CA/PCI were retrospectively analyzed in terms of baseline and procedural characteristics, including preprocedural and postprocedural kidney function. CI-AKI was defined as a relative increase in serum creatinine concentration of at least 0.

Background: Infections of the spine and hip joint are not common and, as described in literature, they are occasionally linked by a psoas abscess. In patients suffering back pain with history of spondylodiscitis, the spine as primary source of infection for a secondary psoas abscess should always be included in differential diagnosis. A delay in diagnosis of the psoas abscess could lead to septic femoral head necrosis.

Background: This study aims to evaluate complications and early postoperative clinical outcomes of direct anterior approach (DAA) in total hip arthroplasty (THA).

Methods: Ninety-one consecutive patients who underwent primary elective unilateral THA between January 2013 and December 2019 were identified. Collected data included age of patient, BMI, ASA score, EBL (estimated blood loss), LOS (length of stay), operating time, and intra/postoperative complications.

In the last decades many innovations have improved the hip replacement and the hip reconstruction surgery such as the introduction of the robotic-arm assisted surgery associated with the direct anterior approach (DAA). This surgical approach for total hip arthroplasty (THA) is growing in popularity and its effectiveness has been demonstrated to improve patients' outcomes, especially regarding more accurate implant placement, less post operative pain, faster recovery and lower of prosthesis dislocation risk. The robotic-arm assisted surgery is another really great innovation for the orthopedic surgeons.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with severe aortic stenosis and coronary artery disease were analyzed to compare outcomes between FFR-guided and angiography-guided revascularization during transcatheter aortic valve implantation.
  • The study found that FFR-guided revascularization had a higher rate of event-free survival (92.6%) compared to angiography-guided (82.0%) at a 2-year follow-up.
  • A significant number of lesions in the FFR group were considered negative for intervention based on the conventional threshold, suggesting that FFR can lead to better clinical outcomes than traditional angiography methods.

Background And Aim Of The Work: Blood loss and transfusion requirements are common in total hip arthroplasty. Tranexamic acid is one of the most interesting options to reduce the need for blood transfusions in a variety of surgical settings. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of perioperative intravenous traxexamic acid regarding blood transfusion rate and volume of transfused blood without increasing adverse events after primary elective cementless total hip arthroplasty.

Background Apolipoprotein CIII (apo CIII ) is a crucial player in triglyceride-rich lipoprotein metabolism, but may also act pleiotropically, provoking inflammatory responses and stimulating coagulation. Elevated apo CIII plasma levels have been associated with increased activity of coagulation factors. Since these features of prothrombotic diathesis are linked with venous thromboembolism ( VTE ), we hypothesized that apo CIII plays a role in VTE .

Being a Surgeon today means taking on your shoulders countless responsibilities. It is definitely a high-stakes job but, even though the professionals do not go through the intense, focused and demanding training schedule as followed by the other equally risky fields, it doesn't yet require any practical training certification. Simulation was introduced in the aviation field in the early '30s with the "Link Trainer", designed to reproduce the most difficult flying case scenario: landing on an air-carrier.

Since target therapy with mTOR inhibitors plays an important role in the current management of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC), there is an increasing demand for predictive biomarkers, which may help to select patients that are most likely to benefit from personalized treatment. When dealing with formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) cancer tissue specimens, several techniques may be used to identify potential molecular markers, yielding different outcome in terms of accuracy. We sought to investigate and compare the capability of three main techniques to detect molecules performing an active function in mTOR pathway in RCC.

The pathogenesis of Achilles tendinopathy: a systematic review.

Foot Ankle Surg

September 2014

Orthopaedic Department, University of Verona (Italy), Surgical Center "P. Confortini", Piazzale A. Stefani 1, 37126 Verona, Italy.

Achilles tendinopathy is a degenerative, not an inflammatory, condition. It is prevalent in athletes involved in running sports. A systematic literature review on Achilles tendon tendinopathy has been performed according to the intrinsic (age, sex, body weight, tendon temperature, systemic diseases, muscle strength, flexibility, previous injuries and anatomical variants, genetic predisposition and blood supply) and extrinsic risk factors (drugs and overuse), which can cause tendon suffering and degeneration.
