The characterization and preservation of genetic variation in crops is critical to meeting the challenges of breeding in the face of changing climates and markets. In recent years, the use of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) has become routine, allowing us to understand the population structure, find divergent lines for crosses, and illuminate the origin of crops. However, the focus on SNPs overlooks other forms of variation, such as copy number variation (CNVs).

Further, counselor-crafted self-monitoring feedback is a core element of lifestyle interventions, although pre-scripted, modular feedback which does not require detailed counselor review may adequately promote weight loss. The current study explored the weight losses achieved in an online program that included facilitated group sessions, as well as outcomes when counselor-crafted self-monitoring feedback was provided.

Adopting an abbreviated approach to self-monitoring might reduce burden and potentially increase engagement while maintaining efficacy.
Methods: Using a Delphi-type study, experts were queried about abbreviated self-monitoring approaches that might best balance efficacy and burden and asked to identify when these approaches might best be implemented within a behavioral weight loss program.

Volunteer water monitoring programs generate new scientific knowledge, contribute data to decision-making processes, and increase social networks, technical knowledge, and skills of participants. Declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic threatened the ability of these programs to continue to engage volunteers to achieve such outcomes. A national water monitoring network hosted a brainstorming webinar to facilitate communication across programs to identify potential solutions to pandemic-influenced challenges.

The incidence of and risk factors for PH in those with prior VTE are poorly characterized. Methods and Results () codes from inpatient and outpatient medical claims from MarketScan administrative databases for years 2011 to 2018 were used to identify cases of VTE, comorbidities before the VTE event, and PH occurring subsequent to the VTE event.

Cells isolated using electrostatic cell sorters are subsequently evaluated in a variety of in vitro and in vivo applications. Thus, manipulations to the cells during the pre- and post-sort processing as well as when the cells are being analyzed by and passing through the sorter fluidics has the potential to affect the experimental results. There are many variables to consider when seeking to preserve cellular integrity and function during the cell-sorting process.

Core facilities have a ubiquitous and increasingly valuable presence at research institutions. Although many shared cores were originally created to provide routine services and access to complex and expensive instrumentation for the research community, they are frequently called upon by investigators to design protocols and procedures to help answer complex research questions. For instance, shared microscopy resources are evolving from providing access to and training on complex imaging instruments to developing detailed innovative protocols and experimental strategies, including sample preparation techniques, staining, complex imaging parameters, and high-level image analyses.

Methods and Results We conducted a case-cohort analysis, including Black and White REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke) study participants ≥45 years of age with prevalent ASCVD (ie, CHD or stroke) at baseline between 2003 and 2007. Baseline lipoprotein(a) molar concentration was measured in participants with ASCVD who experienced a CHD event by December 2017 (n=1166) or an ischemic stroke by September 2019 (n=492) and in a random subcohort of participants with prevalent ASCVD (n=1948).

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is one of the leading causes of post-operative morbidity and mortality. Over previous decades, heparin and warfarin were the predominant therapeutic options for post-operative thromboprophylaxis. However, their use is limited by drawbacks including a narrow therapeutic range, numerous food and drug interactions, and the need for regular monitoring for dose adjustments.

We conducted a nationally representative survey of parents' beliefs and self-reported behaviors regarding childhood vaccinations. Using Bayesian selection among multivariate models, we found that beliefs, even those without any vaccine or health content, predicted vaccine-hesitant behaviors better than demographics, social network effects, or scientific reasoning. The multivariate structure of beliefs combined many types of ideation that included concerns about both conspiracies and side effects.

Methods: We reviewed charts of consecutive patients less than 18 years old that underwent tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy at a single tertiary academic medical center 1 year before (July 2016-June 2017) and 1 year after (July 2017-June 2018) implementation of policy interventions targeted at opioid prescribing. Data collected included demographics, procedure performed, indication, complications, medical comorbidities, opioid prescribing practices (medication, dose, morphine milliequivalents, and postdischarge opioid prescriptions), and postoperative telephone calls and emergency department (ED) visits.

Cardiovascular disease surveillance involves quantifying the evolving population-level burden of cardiovascular outcomes and risk factors as a data-driven initial step followed by the implementation of interventional strategies designed to alleviate this burden in the target population. Despite widespread acknowledgement of its potential value, a national surveillance system dedicated specifically to cardiovascular disease does not currently exist in the United States. Routinely collected health care data such as from electronic health records (EHRs) are a possible means of achieving national surveillance.

An offset measure between the GF-predicted environmental association of adapted alleles and a new environment (GF Offset) is increasingly being used to predict the loss of environmentally adapted alleles under rapid environmental change, but remains mostly untested for this purpose. Here, we explore the robustness of GF Offset to assumption violations, and its relationship to measures of fitness, using SLiM simulations with explicit genome architecture and a spatial metapopulation.

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease consensus recommends biomarker dichotomization, a practice with well-described clinical strengths and methodological limitations. Although neuroimaging studies have explored alternative biomarker interpretation strategies, a formally defined three-range approach and its prognostic impact remains under-explored for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers .
Methods: With two-graph receiver-operating characteristics based on different reference schemes, we derived three-range cut-points for CSF Elecsys biomarkers.

Objectives: To investigate whether cardiovascular risk factors (body mass index, smoking, alcohol intake, hypertension, and diabetes) are associated with the risk of VTE in elderly and to assess the combined effect between cardiovascular risk factors and genetic risk factors for VTE (factor V Leiden/prothrombin 20210A, positive family history of VTE, and non-O blood group).

Aspirin is one of the most widely used medicines. Although aspirin is commonly utilized for the treatment of several medical conditions, its broadest uptake is for the prevention of recurrent ischemic events in patients with atherosclerotic disease. Its mechanism of action of inhibiting platelet activation via blockade of thromboxane A production is unique and is not covered by any other antiplatelet agents.

Background It is unknown if stroke symptoms in the absence of a stroke diagnosis are a sign of subtle cardioembolic phenomena. The objective of this study was to examine associations between atrial fibrillation (AF) and stroke symptoms among adults with no clinical history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Methods and Results We evaluated associations between AF and self-reported stroke symptoms in the national, prospective REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke) cohort.
