Obtaining robust estimates of population abundance is a central challenge hindering the conservation and management of many threatened and exploited species. Close-kin mark-recapture (CKMR) is a genetics-based approach that has strong potential to improve the monitoring of data-limited species by enabling estimates of abundance, survival, and other parameters for populations that are challenging to assess. However, CKMR models have received limited sensitivity testing under realistic population dynamics and sampling scenarios, impeding the application of the method in population monitoring programs and stock assessments.

Traditional methods of estimating abundance and related metrics represent trade-offs in effort and precision of estimates. Abstract: Peripheral blood eosinophilia is a risk factor for thrombosis and the presence of other prothrombotic factors such as antiphospholipid antibodies can potentiate that risk. The authors present a case of acute pulmonary embolism which developed at the peak of eosinophilia, later found to have transient positive antiphospholipid antibodies in a male patient with right lower limb cellulitis and a history of intravenous drug abuse.

Objectives: Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients experience greater financial toxicity than other cancer patients. Research on financial toxicity has concentrated on patients despite many informal caregivers sharing finances and reducing work hours to provide patient care. Inference of such relationships can be difficult using biallelic loci due to the large number of markers required to obtain the necessary power. Background: Approximately 1 in 4 athletes returning to sports will sustain a second anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Psychological factors related to kinesiophobia, confidence, and psychological readiness are associated with second ACL injury; however, the evidence is conflicting.
Hypothesis: Athletes who sustain a second ACL injury (ie, graft rupture or contralateral ACL rupture) within 2 years of ACL reconstruction (ACLR) would have greater kinesiophobia, less confidence, and lower psychological readiness prior to return to sport (RTS) compared with athletes who do not sustain a second ACL injury.
Objectives: The American Academy of Otolaryngology clinical practice guidelines recommend cross-sectional imaging or fine needle aspiration for any neck mass in an adult that persists beyond 2 weeks that is not convincingly related to a bacterial infection. We aimed to assess the role of ultrasound in the evaluation and management of neck masses.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed of adult patients evaluated in the Otolaryngology clinic at a single institution from December 2014 to December 2015 for a visible or palpable neck mass persistent beyond 2 weeks who had an ultrasound exam as part of their initial workup.

Clinical genetic evaluations are defined by the knowledge and technology available at the time they occur. In the modern era, microarray and exome sequencing are first line tests for clinical geneticists; however, beginning in the late 1970s and continuing until the turn of the past century, a standard genetic evaluation consisted, in many cases, of an examination by a dysmorphologist as well as a conventional karyotype. In general, once a genetic diagnosis is established, it does not get revisited as more advanced methods become available.

Introduction: We examine whether the association between key plasma biomarkers (amyloid β [aβ] 42/40, total tau (t-tau), neurofilament light [NfL]) and cognitive trajectories (executive function [EF] and episodic memory [EM]) is mediated through neurodegeneration.
Methods: All participants were recruited from the University of California, Davis-Alzheimer's Disease Research Center ( = 473; baseline age range = 49-95 years, 60% women). We applied an accelerated longitudinal design to test latent growth models for EF and EM, and path and mediation analyses.
