Disclosing Lesbian and Gay Male Sexual Orientation in Later Life: Attitudes of Younger and Older Generations in Eight Latin American Countries.

The purpose of this research was to explore attitudes toward older lesbians and gay men disclosing their sexual preferences in eight Latin American countries. The sample consisted of 1,539 participants belonging to three age groups (18-29 years, 60-69 years, and 70 years and over). Their answers to two open-ended questions were content-analyzed, and binary logistic regressions were run on the extreme attitudinal categories.

GLIM criteria for the diagnosis of malnutrition - A consensus report from the global clinical nutrition community.

Pancreatic Beta Cell Death: Novel Potential Mechanisms in Diabetes Therapy.

Purpose Of Review: Describing the diverse molecular mechanisms (particularly immunological) involved in the death of the pancreatic beta cell in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Recent Findings: Beta cell death is the final event in a series of mechanisms that, up to date, have not been entirely clarified; it represents the pathophysiological mechanism in the natural history of diabetes mellitus. These mechanisms are not limited to an apoptotic process only, which is characteristic of the immune-mediated insulitis in type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Cardiorespiratory responses, nitric oxide production and inflammatory factors in patients with myocardial infarction after rehabilitation.

There is evidence that myocardial infarction (MI) patients have an inflammatory process that includes skeletal muscles, and exercise has been reported to reduce some inflammatory markers. The aim of this work was to study NO and some inflammatory markers in quadriceps muscle of MI patients before and after cardiac rehabilitation. Muscle biopsy was obtained in 17 MI patients before and after CR and only once in 11 healthy subjects.

Manual Compared With Electric Vacuum Aspiration for Treatment of Molar Pregnancy.

Objective: To evaluate uterine evacuation of patients with molar pregnancy, comparing manual with electric vacuum aspiration.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with molar pregnancy followed at the Rio de Janeiro Trophoblastic Disease Center from January 2007 to December 2016. The individual primary study outcomes were incomplete uterine evacuation, uterine perforation, development of uterine synechia, and development of postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.

Biochemical and clinical characterization of metabolic phenotypes: a cross-sectional study from Maracaibo city, Venezuela.

In 1980, Reuben Andresen observed that in certain individuals, obesity did not increase mortality, introducing an atypical phenotype called "healthy obese". Other studies reported that 10-15 % of lean individuals presented insulin resistance, hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. The objective of this study was to evaluate biochemical and clinical characteristics of metabolic phenotypes in Maracaibo city.

Ultrastructure of colorectal adenocarcinoma and peritumoral tissue in untreated patients.

In this study, we describe, compare, and discuss several subcellular alterations found in Colorectal Adenocarcinoma and peritumoral tissue using transmission electron microscopy, morphometry, and statistical analysis. Tissue samples from anterior resections were collected from patients diagnosed with Colorectal Adenocarcinoma in the University Hospital of Caracas. Samples were processed according to the typical protocol for their observation through transmission electron microscopy.

Comparison of 2 Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Immunoassays Commercially Available for Monitoring Patients With Gestational Trophoblastic Disease.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels in patients with gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) using 2 commercially available hCG immunoassays.

Methods: Serum samples were obtained from patients with GTD attending the Botucatu Medical School Trophoblastic Diseases Center of São Paulo State University (UNESP), from November 2014 to October 2015. Serum hCG levels were measured with both Architect i2000SR and Immulite 2000 XPi chemiluminescence assays.

Uterine artery Doppler flow velocimetry parameters for predicting gestational trophoblastic neoplasia after complete hydatidiform mole, a prospective cohort study.

Objectives:: Doppler ultrasonography can be used to assess neoangiogenesis, a characteristic feature of postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. However, there is limited information on whether uterine artery Doppler flow velocimetry parameters can predict gestational trophoblastic neoplasia following a complete hydatidiform mole. The purpose of this study was as follows: 1) to compare uterine blood flow before and after complete mole evacuation between women who developed postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia and those who achieved spontaneous remission, 2) to assess the usefulness of uterine Doppler parameters as predictors of postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia and to determine the best parameters and cutoff values for predicting postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.

Development of subcutaneous fat in Spanish and Latin American children and adolescents: Reference values for biceps, triceps, subscapular and suprailiac skinfolds.

Subcutaneous fat skinfolds represent a reliable assessment instrument of adiposity status. This study provides current percentile references for four subcutaneous skinfolds (biceps, triceps, subscapular, suprailiac) applicable to children and adolescents in Spain and in Latin American countries where data are scarce. The design consisted of a cross-sectional multicenter study performed with identical methods in 5 countries (Argentina, Cuba, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela).

Sudden death circadian rhythm in Chagasic patients compared to non-Chagasic patients.

Cancer and the metastatic substrate.

Seventy percent of cancer patients have detectable metastases when they receive a diagnosis and 90% of cancer deaths result from metastases. These two facts emphasise the urgency for research to study the mechanisms and processes that enable metastasis. We need to develop a greater understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that cause metastasis and also we need to do more.
