Introduction: Cardiac surgery is associated with significant morbidity and longer length-of-stay (LOS) than most other surgeries. Regional cerebral oximetry (rSO) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) on the patient's forehead monitors cerebral oxygenation during surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Its purpose is to detect and manage periods of cerebral hypoxia which may otherwise go undetected, thereby reducing morbidity.

The aim of this study was to synthesize several small molecules of the type 5-nitroimidazole-sulfanyl and evaluate biological properties against the main Leishmania species that cause cutaneous leishmaniasis in Venezuela. Final compounds 4-7 were generated through simple nucleophilic substitution of 1-(2-chloroethyl)-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole 3 with 2-mercaptoethanol, 1-methyl-2-mercaptoethanol, and 2-thyolacetic acid derivative. Compound 8 was synthesized via a coupling reaction between 7 and (S)-Methyl 2-amino-4-methylpentanoate hydrochloride.

Article Synopsis
  • Study Purpose
  • : The research aimed to analyze pain trends and characteristics in different facial areas of patients undergoing rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and how these correlate with age and gender.
  • Methodology
  • : Involving 85 subjects (45 males, 40 females), patients rated their overall facial pain (GPP) and localized pain (LPP) in specific facial areas using pain scales during the first two weeks of RME treatment.
  • Findings
  • : Pain levels peaked between days 2-3, with the highest discomfort reported in the posterior and anterior palates. Significant correlations were found between pain perception, age, and gender, indicating that these factors influence the experience of pain during

The deterioration of Venezuela's health system in recent years undoubtedly contributes to an increased impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding healthcare workers' (HCWs) knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) toward COVID-19 in the early stages of the pandemic could inform their medical training and improve their preparedness. A online national cross-sectional survey was conducted between May 26th and May 30th, 2020, to assess KAPs among HCWs in Venezuela.

Food Sources of Shortfall Nutrients among Latin Americans: Results from the Latin American Study of Health and Nutrition (ELANS).

Int J Environ Res Public Health

May 2021

Center for Excellence in Nutrition and Feeding Difficulties, Sabará Children's Hospital, PENSI Institute, São Paulo 012228-200, Brazil.

Increased consumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods can lead to inadequate intakes of shortfall nutrients, including vitamin A, D, C, and E, dietary folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and fiber. The objective was to examine the prevalence of inadequate intake of shortfall nutrients and identify food sources of shortfall nutrients in eight Latin American countries. Data from ELANS, a multi-country, population-based study of 9218 adolescents and adults were used.

Article Synopsis
  • The parasite Sparganum proliferum is rare but always fatal in humans, invading tissues and organs without clear understanding of its biology or life cycle.
  • Researchers sequenced the genomes of S. proliferum and a related non-fatal tapeworm to explore their evolutionary connections and identify genes tied to pathogenicity.
  • Findings revealed S. proliferum has a unique evolutionary path and mechanisms for asexual reproduction, contributing to its severe effects on human health, providing useful genome resources for future studies.

Curr Probl Cardiol

September 2022

Division of Cardiology, Kingston Health Science Center, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

Snakebite envenomation is a neglected tropical disease which can result in morbidity and mortality. Cardiac implications are poorly understood due to the low frequency of cardiotoxicity combined with a lack of robust information, as snakebites commonly occur in remote and rural areas. This review aims to assess cardiovascular implications of snakebite envenoming and proposes an algorithm for screening of cardiovascular manifestations.

This study describes the direct synthesis of 2-amino-4-(phenylsubstituted)-5H-indeno[1,2-b]pyridine-3-carbonitrile derivatives 5-21, through sequential multicomponent reaction of aromatic aldehydes, malononitrile, and 1-indanone in the presence of ammonium acetate and acetic acid (catalytic). The biological study showed that compound 10 significantly impeded proliferation of the cell lines PC-3, LNCaP, and MatLyLu. The antimetastatic effects of compound 10 could be related with inhibition of MMP9 in the PC-3 and LNCaP human cell lines.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNETs) are benign mixed glioneuronal neoplasms that frequently occur in children and young adults. We present the case of a 17-year-old male who arrived at the hospital following seizure-like activity. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan showed a 10 x 8 x 10 mm, oval-shaped, non-enhancing, well-defined mass within the right hippocampus.

Introduction: Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a reactive inflammatory vascular lesion of the skin and mucous membranes, characterised by the presence of enlarged venules and seamed and seamless capillaries with plump endothelial cells (EC), and numerous macrophages. EC activation upregulates the synthesis of galectins and induces their translocation to the EC surface promoting angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis, particularly galectin-1 (Gal-1), Gal-3 and Gal-8. However, the presence and distribution of Gal-1, -3 and -8, as well as their implications in the pathogenesis of PG, has not been considered.
