Department of Oral Pathology, Faculdade de Odontologia-Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul-UFRGS, Porto Alegre, Brazil; TelessaudeRS-UFRGS, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; Oral Medicine, Otorhynolaringology Service, Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Objective: This retrospective study analyzed the errors generated by a convolutional neural network (CNN) when performing automated classification of oral lesions according to their clinical characteristics, seeking to identify patterns in systemic errors in the intermediate layers of the CNN.

Study Design: A cross-sectional analysis nested in a previous trial in which automated classification by a CNN model of elementary lesions from clinical images of oral lesions was performed. The resulting CNN classification errors formed the dataset for this study.

Palliative treatments for back pain usually include exercise, analgesics, physiotherapy, prostheses, and surgery in severe cases. Technologies for postural monitoring are growing, and they are important in preventing back pain and mitigating permanent damage. Remote work, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, made people spend more time than usual in chairs and environments not certified by the health aspects of work.

The use of recycled waste has been the focus of several studies due to its potential to allow a more sustainable use of construction materials and minimize improper waste disposal in landfills or incinerators. More specifically, garment textile waste has been examined as internal reinforcement of cementitious matrices to increase the deformability and control fissure formation. In this study, polyester textiles are analyzed and incorporated in cementitious composites in order to evaluate their mechanical properties.

Artificial neural networks (ANN) are artificial intelligence (AI) techniques used in the automated recognition and classification of pathological changes from clinical images in areas such as ophthalmology, dermatology, and oral medicine. The combination of enterprise imaging and AI is gaining notoriety for its potential benefits in healthcare areas such as cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, pathology, physiatry, radiation oncology, radiology, and endoscopic. The present study aimed to analyze, through a systematic literature review, the application of performance of ANN and deep learning in the recognition and automated classification of lesions from clinical images, when comparing to the human performance.

Peripheral body temperature rhythm as a marker of the severity of depression symptoms in fibromyalgia.

Biol Psychol

February 2023

Post-graduation Program in Medicine: Medical Sciences, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil; Laboratory of Pain & Neuromodulation, Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA), Porto Alegre, Brazil; Pain and Palliative Care Service at Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA), Porto Alegre, Brazil; Department of Surgery, School of Medicine, Federal University of Rio Grande Do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil. Electronic address:

Background: Circadian rhythm alterations have been reported in fibromyalgia (FM) and depression. Peripheral body temperature (PBT) is a reliable measure of the circadian system, so we compared the PBT rhythm between persons with FM and controls. We evaluated PBT correlation with depression symptoms and pain severity in women with FM.

November 2022

University of São Paulo, School of Public Health, Department of Epidemiology - Laboratory of Causal Inference in Epidemiology (LINCE-USP), São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Background: We aimed to calculate the weekly growth of the incidence and the effective reproductive number (Rt) of the 2022 Monkeypox epidemic during its introduction in Brazil.

Method: We described the case distribution in the country and calculated the incidence trend and the Rt in the four geographical states with the highest case reports. By using two regression approaches, count model and the Prais-Winsten, we calculated the relative incidence increase.

Stay-at-home policy is a case of exception fallacy: an internet-based ecological study.

Sci Rep

March 2021

Applied Computing Graduate Program, University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS), Av. Unisinos, 950, São Leopoldo, RS, 93022-750, Brazil.

A recent mathematical model has suggested that staying at home did not play a dominant role in reducing COVID-19 transmission. The second wave of cases in Europe, in regions that were considered as COVID-19 controlled, may raise some concerns. Our objective was to assess the association between staying at home (%) and the reduction/increase in the number of deaths due to COVID-19 in several regions in the world.

Producing of extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) containing pleasant sensory notes depends on fruits quality and production process and is strongly associated with their classification that is based on aroma and sensory taste. Consolidated as an efficient method, the direct headspace solid phase microextraction technique (HS-SPME) was utilized to characterize the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) profile, which contributes to the aroma of olive oils from southwestern (Serra da Mantiqueira region) and southern (Campanha Gaúcha region) Brazil. In this work, the relationship between the VOCs and sensory characteristics has been established; 19 EVOO samples (12 from Campanha Gaúcha and 7 from Serra da Mantiqueira) were studied.

Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agronomy, Núcleo de Estudos em Sistemas de Produção de Bovinos de Corte e Cadeia Produtiva (NESPro), Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The bioeconomic efficiency of cow-calf systems was compared by a deterministic dynamic simulation. The simulation model considered stable cow-calf systems differentiated by the maximum age for culling cows, lifetime, culled at 4-13 years old. The necessary supply of metabolizable energy for the herd was established as natural grasslands, cultivated pasture in the winter/spring, and pre-dried pasture produced by the system.

Article Synopsis
  • Sulfites are used in wine production for their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, while copper is associated with fungicides, exposing wine yeasts to both elements regularly.
  • Copper tolerance in wine yeasts is linked to the CUP1 gene that helps with copper detoxification, and sulfite resistance is mainly due to the presence of the translocation t(XVI;VIII) in the SSU1 gene, which aids in sulfite metabolism.
  • The study analyzed 253 Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains from different vineyards, finding significant variability in CUP1 gene copy numbers and revealing a correlation between the t(XVI;VIII) translocation and sulfite tolerance levels, while introducing a new translocation, t(XVI;XV
