The growing knowledge about the harmful effects caused by some synthetic ingredients present in skincare products has led to an extensive search for natural bioactives. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the dermatological potential of five fractions (F1-F5), obtained by a sequential extraction procedure, from the brown seaweed . The antioxidant (DPPH, FRAP, ORAC and TPC), anti-enzymatic (collagenase, elastase, hyaluronidase and tyrosinase), antimicrobial (, and ), anti-inflammatory (nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6 and interleukin-10) and photoprotective (reactive oxygen species) properties of all fractions were evaluated.

The present study evaluated the potential for biogas generation from microalgae (MA) biomass and macrophytes used in vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCW). The samples were obtained by separation and collection of MA after a hydraulic retention time of 14 days, frozen and taken to the laboratory, while the macrophytes of VFCW were obtained, by pruning, every 6 months. The obtained results presented reductions of 63.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCA) is one of the leading causes of death among men, being related to several factors, including the aging male population, like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a histopathological and hyperplastic alteration associated to prostate aging. The FASL, BCL-2 and BAX genes are involved in cell apoptosis regulation and can be related to the development of both cancer and hyperplasia. This study aimed to investigate the association of FASL - 844 (rs763110), BCL-2 -938 (rs2279115) and BAX - 248 (rs4645878) polymorphic variants in Southern Brazilian PCA and BPH patients and healthy controls.

Gastrointestinal tract diseases are characterized by an imbalance in physiological functions, which may involve inflammatory and metabolic pathways and trigger chronic, multifactorial, and idiopathic inflammatory disorders. The association of probiotics with prebiotics has the potential to remedy these afflictive conditions, because they attenuate or even block the adhesion of pathogenic microorganisms in the enteric environment. This article highlights the importance of using probiotics associated with fibers from Psyllium as prebiotics to maintain a healthy intestinal microbiota.

Luteolin is one of the most common flavonoids present in edible plants and its potential benefits to the central nervous system include decrease of microglia activation, neuronal damage and high antioxidant properties. The aim of this research was to evaluate the neuroprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of luteolin-7-O-glucoside (Lut7). Undifferentiated and retinoic acid (RA)-differentiated SH-SY5Y cells were pretreated with Lut7 and incubated with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA).

Objective: Cognitive impairments are known to be a frequent cause of disability in bipolar disorder (BD) and major depression (MDD). Yet there is no consensus regarding the particular cognitive functions whose impairments can lead to disability in each domain of functioning. The aim of this study was to perform a longitudinal evaluation of working memory, inhibition, cognitive flexibility and attention in BD and MDD, investigate the relationship of these cognitive functions to disability and quality of life, and evaluate the impact of variables related to cognitive reserve (education and daily cognitive stimulation) on cognitive performance.

The aim of this study was to synthesize iron magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with histidine and nickel (FeO-His-Ni) to be used as support materials for oriented immobilization of His-tagged recombinant enzymes of high molecular weight, using β-galactosidase as a model. The texture, morphology, magnetism, thermal stability, pH and temperature reaction conditions, and the kinetic parameters of the biocatalyst obtained were assessed. In addition, the operational stability of the biocatalyst in the lactose hydrolysis of cheese whey and skim milk by batch processes was also assessed.

Current treatments for neurodegenerative diseases (ND) are symptomatic and do not affect disease progression. Slowing this progression remains a crucial unmet need for patients and their families. c-Jun N-terminal kinase 3 (JNK3) are related to several ND hallmarks including apoptosis, oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammation.

The treatment of Parkinson´s disease (PD) has benefited from significant advances resulting from the increasing research efforts focused on new therapeutics. However, the current treatments for PD are mostly symptomatic, alleviating disease symptoms without reversing or retarding disease progression. Thus, it is critical to find new molecules that can result in more effective treatments.

Marine natural products have exhibited uncommon chemical structures with relevant antitumor properties highlighting their potential to inspire the development of new anticancer agents. The goal of this work was to study the antitumor activities of the brominated diterpene sphaerodactylomelol, a rare example of the dactylomelane family. Cytotoxicity (10-100 µM; 24 h) was evaluated on tumor cells (A549, CACO-2, HCT-15, MCF-7, NCI-H226, PC-3, SH-SY5Y, SK-ML-28) and the effects estimated by MTT assay.

Parkinsons Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide, and is characterized by a progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. Without an effective treatment, it is crucial to find new therapeutic options to fight the neurodegenerative process, which may arise from marine resources. Accordingly, the goal of the present work was to evaluate the ability of the monoterpenoid lactone Loliolide, isolated from the green seaweed , to prevent neurological cell death mediated by the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) on SH-SY5Y cells and their anti-inflammatory effects in RAW 264.

Glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) is a potential target in the field of Alzheimer's disease drug discovery. We recently reported a new class of 9-pyrimido[4,5-]indole-based GSK-3β inhibitors, of which 3-(3-((7-chloro-9-pyrimido[4,5-]indol-4-yl)(methyl)amino)piperidin-1-yl)propanenitrile () demonstrated promising inhibitory potency. However, this compound underwent rapid degradation by human liver microsomes.

Background: Significant heterogeneity is observed in the cognitive profiles of bipolar disorder (BD) and major depression (MDD), characterized in part by differences in individual and clinical variables such as cognitive reserve (CR) and depression severity. However, no other study evaluated how this variables may interact regarding neurocognitive functioning. The aim of the present exploratory study was to evaluate the interaction between different depressive symptoms severity, CR and diagnosis with neurocognitive functioning.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the efficiency of bovine (CW) and buffalo cheese whey (BCW) as encapsulating agents for the spray-drying (SD) of endogenous ML 82 and the reference strain ATCC 8014. Their protective features were also tested for resistance to storage (90 days, 25 °C), simulated gastrointestinal tract (GIT) conditions, and for their application in orange juice. Survival rates after SD were approximately 95% in all samples tested, meaning both CW and BCW performed satisfactorily.

Natural products are still a promising source of bioactive molecules. Food and Drug Administration data showed that approximately 49% of the approved molecules originate naturally or chemically-resemble these substances, of which more than 70% are being used in anticancer therapy. It is noteworthy that at present there are no scientific studies to prove the effectiveness and safety of a number of plants used in folk medicine such as in the case of O.
