Popcorn consumption is becoming increasingly attractive, and the effects of post-harvest operations are essential for the improvement of industrial processes. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of drying temperature on the morphology, technological, and digestibility properties from the isolated starch from red popcorn grains. Red popcorn grains were dried in oven-drying (30 °C) and fixed-bed dryer at 40, 70, and 100 °C.

Pain and Inflammation Management in Older Adults: A Brazilian Consensus of Potentially Inappropriate Medication and Their Alternative Therapies.

The aim of the present study was to develop and validate a Potentially Inappropriate Medications (PIM) list and alternative therapies for treatment of pain and inflammation in older people adapted to the Brazilian context. A preliminary PIM list suitable for the Brazilian market was developed on the basis of three published international PIM lists [Beers 2015, Screening Tool of Older People's Potentially Inappropriate Prescriptions - 2015, European Union (7) PIM list]. We used the modified Delphi technique (two-round) to validate concerns of use and alternative therapies related to PIM for treatment of pain and inflammation in older adults ≥65 years in Brazil.

Objective: In this article, we evaluate and compare the frailties of two different standards of disclosure of information regarding the risks of medical procedures applied in recent judicial decisions in the United Kingdom. As an alternative, we present the tenets and philosophical grounds of an agency model of consent and a person-based standard of disclosure.

Methods: Critical philosophical analysis of background assumptions of a new approach to bioethics, enriched with critical discussion of related philosophical literature.

Results: In Care and Respect in Bioethics, through an approach filled with hard cases, Dall'Agnol argues that the metaethics of respectful care has theoretical advantages over the intuitionist metaethics of principlism and the particularism of casuistry, offering an original comprehensive approach that crosses the three dimensions of ethical inquiry: metaethical, normative, and applied ethics.

The number of deaths from noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs) has increased worldwide. These deaths would be partly avoidable if prevention and follow-up measures were applied to reduce risk factors. Computing can help educate individuals, improving their knowledge about NCDs.

Fluorine 18-FDG PET/CT and Diffusion-weighted MRI for Malignant versus Benign Pulmonary Lesions: A Meta-Analysis.

Purpose To perform a meta-analysis of the literature to compare the diagnostic performance of fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT and diffusion-weighted (DW) MRI in the differentiation of malignant and benign pulmonary nodules and masses. Materials and Methods Published English-language studies on the diagnostic accuracy of PET/CT and/or DW MRI in the characterization of pulmonary lesions were searched in relevant databases through December 2017. The primary focus was on studies in which joint DW MRI and PET/CT were performed in the entire study population, to reduce interstudy heterogeneity.

Shift work, sleep duration, and body image dissatisfaction among female workers in southern Brazil.

We examined the association between shift work and sleep duration with body image dissatisfaction (BID) among shift-working women in southern Brazil. In this cross-sectional study, data of 505 women shift workers, between 18 and 60 years old, were collected between January and April 2011. BID was assessed using the Stunkard Figure Rating Scale.

Associations between postpartum depression and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Objective: To identify possible relationships between postpartum depression and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), as well as the associated risk factors for developing postpartum depression.

Methods: The present prospective descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among postpartum women who attended a public maternity hospital in Brazil between January 15, 2015, and January 15, 2017. The diagnosis and severity of HDP were based on blood pressure measurements (systolic ≥140 mm Hg or diastolic ≥90 mm Hg), proteinuria, clinical findings, and laboratory findings.

Vale dos Vinhedos appellation of origin has a very recent history as industrial wine making region. In this study we investigated the genetic and phenotypic variability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains isolated from South-Brazilian vineyards in order to evaluate strain fermentation aptitude and copper and sulphites tolerance. Merlot grape bunches were collected from three vineyards and yeast isolation was performed after single bunch fermentation.

Basal cortisol levels and metabolic syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

Objective: To perform a qualitative synthesis (systematic review) and quantitative analysis (meta-analysis) to summarize the evidence regarding the relationship between basal cortisol levels and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adults.

Methods: A systematic search was performed in the PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO databases for observational studies on the association between basal cortisol levels and MetS. The quality of individual studies was assessed by the Newcastle-Ottawa score.

The role of municipal public policies in oral health socioeconomic inequalities in Brazil: A multilevel study.

Objectives: It is known that fluoridation has a contextual effect on oral health socioeconomic inequalities, but broad public policies have not been investigated. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of municipal public policies on oral health across different social strata.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with 7328 12-year-old children and 5445 15-19-year-old adolescents from 177 Brazilian municipalities.

Effect of characteristics of pharmacotherapy on non-adherence in chronic cardiovascular disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

Introduction: Cardiovascular medications are effective in prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD); however, medication non-adherence contributes to morbidity and mortality.

Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to summarise the evidence regarding the relationship between characteristics of drug therapy (pharmacotherapy) and medication non-adherence in the CVD population.

Methods: Systematic searches in PubMed, LILACS, Academic Search and CINAHL databases for observational studies that enrolled adults with CVD were performed, from January 1960 to December 2015.

Pathogenic potential of environmental resident fungi from ornithogenic soils of Antarctica.

We assessed the diversity of cultivable fungi in the ornithogenic soil nests of bird species like Phalacrocorax atriceps, Macronectes giganteus, Pygoscelis antarcticus, and Pygoscelis papua in the Antarctic islands. From 481 fungi isolated at 15 °C, only 50 displayed growth at 37 °C, and were identified as 14 species of 15 genera. Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium chrysogenum, and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa were the most abundant species obtained.

Sleep-related problems and minor psychiatric disorders among Brazilian shift workers.

The aim of this study was to explore the association between sleep-related problems with the occurrence of minor psychiatric disorders in shift workers of southern Brazil. A cross-sectional study with 1202 workers (785 females) aged 18-50 years was carried out. Minor psychiatric disorders were assessed using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), and four sleep problems were collected and analyzed: sleep deprivation (≤ 5h), difficulty falling asleep, waking up during sleep, and sleep medication use.
