The aim of this study is to investigate the prognostic role of body mass index (BMI) on survival from head and neck cancer (HNC). We performed a pooled analysis of studies included in the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology consortium. We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the adjusted hazard ratios (HR) for overall survival and HNC-specific survival, and we stratified the results according to cancer site.

While some previous studies disaggregated the Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (ANHPI) population to investigate survival for childhood leukemia, further studies are needed to understand the differences between subpopulations. The aim of our study was to estimate 5-year relative survival for patients with childhood leukemia and to investigate disparities in prognostic factors with disaggregation of the ANHPI population. We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program 17 database and included 1881 ANHPI patients with childhood leukemia and 8772 non-Hispanic White (NHW) patients with childhood leukemia.

Background: Immuno-oncology therapy (IO) is associated with a variety of treatment-related toxicities. However, the impact of toxicity on the treatment discontinuation rate between males and females is unknown. We hypothesized that immune-related adverse events would lead to more frequent treatment changes in females since autoimmune diseases occur more frequently in females.

Program in Medical and Population Genetics, Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, Cambridge, MA, USA; Center for Genomic Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, USA.

The 2015 American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics and the Association for Molecular Pathology variant classification publication established a standard employed internationally to guide laboratories in variant assessment. Those recommendations included both pathogenic (PP1) and benign (BS4) criteria for evaluating the inheritance patterns of variants, but details of how to apply those criteria at appropriate evidence levels were sparse. Several publications have since attempted to provide additional guidance, but anecdotally, this issue is still challenging.

Background: Limited data from prospective studies suggest that higher dietary intake of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCn3PUFA), which hold anti-inflammatory properties, may reduce endometrial cancer risk; particularly among certain subgroups characterized by body mass and tumor pathology.

Materials And Methods: Data from 12 prospective cohort studies participating in the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium were harmonized as nested case-control studies, including 7268 endometrial cancer cases and 26,133 controls. Habitual diet was assessed by food frequency questionnaire, from which fatty acid intakes were estimated.

Background: Since 2009, the Chinese government has been reforming the healthcare system and has committed to reinforcing increased use of primary care. To date, however, the Chinese healthcare system is still heavily reliant on hospital-based specialty care. Studies consistently show an association between primary care and improved health outcomes, and the same association is also found among the disadvantaged population.

Background: Limited data exist regarding which head and head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors will suffer from long-term dysphagia.

Methods: From a population-based cohort of 1901 Utah residents with HNC and ≥3 years follow-up, we determined hazard ratio for dysphagia, aspiration pneumonia, or gastrostomy associated with various risk factors. We tested prediction models with combinations of factors and then assessed discrimination of our final model.

Leptomeningeal dissemination: a sinister pattern of medulloblastoma growth.

J Neurosurg Pediatr

3Cancer Research Program, Research Institute of the McGill University Health Center and Department of Surgery, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Leptomeningeal dissemination (LMD) is the defining pattern of metastasis for medulloblastoma. Although LMD is responsible for virtually 100% of medulloblastoma deaths, it remains the least well-understood part of medulloblastoma pathogenesis. The fact that medulloblastomas rarely metastasize outside the CNS but rather spread almost exclusively to the spinal and intracranial leptomeninges has fostered the long-held belief that medulloblastoma cells spread directly through the CSF, not the bloodstream.

Histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) is the catalytic component of NCoR/SMRT corepressor complexes that mediate the actions of transcription factors implicated in the regulation of B-cell development and function. We crossed conditional knockout mice with knockin animals to delete in early progenitor B cells. The spleens of mice were virtually devoid of mature B cells, and B220CD43 B-cell progenitors accumulated within the bone marrow.

Background/aims: The serrated pathway accounts for 15-25% of sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC). In our study, we sought to accurately characterize sessile serrated polyps (SSP) in a population by electronically interrogating colonoscopy patients' endoscopy and pathology reports using a rules-based text search of pre-defined SSP-related terms. To this aim, we compared a sample of putative SSP and hyperplastic polyps (HP) using our algorithm to a determination of SSP or HP by pathologist and molecular examination to determine the feasibility of large-scale identification of SSP in electronic medical records.

The ability to find highly related clinical concepts is essential for many applications such as for hypothesis generation, query expansion for medical literature search, search results filtering, ICD-10 code filtering and many other applications. While manually constructed medical terminologies such as SNOMED CT can surface certain related concepts, these terminologies are inadequate as they depend on expertise of several subject matter experts making the terminology curation process open to geographic and language bias. In addition, these terminologies also provide no quantifiable evidence on how related the concepts are.

Medulloblastomas are malignant brain tumors that arise in the cerebella of children. The presumed cells-of-origin are undifferentiated precursors of granule neurons that occupy the external granule layer (EGL) of the developing cerebellum. The overexpression of proteins that normally stimulate proliferation of neural progenitor cells may initiate medulloblastoma formation.
