Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC), is a ubiquitous pollutant. As part of the Consortium Linking Academic and Regulatory Insights on BPA Toxicity (CLARITY-BPA), we sought to determine whether exposure of Sprague-Dawley rats to 2,500 μg/kg/day BPA (BPA) or 0.5 μg/kg/day ethinyl estradiol (EE) from gestational day 6 through postnatal day 21 induces behavior-relevant gene expression and DNA methylation changes in hippocampus and hypothalamus at adulthood.

Sensory Quality, Physicochemical Attributes, Polyphenol Profiles, and Residual Fungicides in Strawberries from Different Disease-Control Treatments.

Using alternative agricultural practices in combination with proper postharvest handling has become a major goal to improve fresh produce quality. Here, two different strawberry ( Fragaria × ananassa) genotypes were used as a model to study the impact of repeated, reduced-fungicide or no-fungicide applications on the sensory quality, physicochemical attributes, polyphenol profiles, and residual fungicide in strawberries. Strawberries grown under reduced-fungicide applications had similar or better physicochemical quality than conventionally and organically grown fruit and lower levels of fungicide residues than conventional fruit.

Macroion-Solvent Interactions in Charged Droplets.

Macroion-droplet interactions play a critical role in many settings such as ionization techniques of samples in mass spectrometry analysis and atmospheric aerosols. The droplets under investigation are composed of a polar solvent, primarily water, a charged macroion, and, possibly, buffer ions. We present highlights of our research on the relation between the charge state of a macroion and the droplet morphologies.

GLP-1 receptor agonists show neuroprotective effects in animal models of diabetes.

This study was designed to evaluate whether the acute effect of native low-density lipoprotein (nLDL) on intracavernosal pressure (ICP) is reversible and related to plasma asymmetrical dimethylarginine (ADMA), endogenous inhibition of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) levels and eNOS expression in cavernous tissues. Photoacclimatory and photoprotective responses to cold versus heat stress in high latitude reef corals.

Corals at the world's southernmost coral reef of Lord Howe Island (LHI) experience large temperature and light fluctuations and need to deal with periods of cold temperature (<18°C), but few studies have investigated how corals are able to cope with these conditions. Analysis of Genetic Algorithm for Rule-Set Production (GARP) modeling approach for predicting distributions of fleas implicated as vectors of plague, Yersinia pestis, in California.

More than 20 species of fleas in California are implicated as potential vectors of Yersinia pestis. Extremely limited spatial data exist for plague vectors-a key component to understanding where the greatest risks for human, domestic animal, and wildlife health exist. This study increases the spatial data available for 13 potential plague vectors by using the ecological niche modeling system Genetic Algorithm for Rule-Set Production (GARP) to predict their respective distributions.

The Elder Image Scale: a method for indexing history and emotion in family caregiving.

Although caregiving has been studied extensively, most studies have focused on the activities performed by caregivers, problems encountered and caregivers' reactions. Less attention has been paid to measuring historical and interpersonal factors that may shape the situation and affect outcomes, but are not necessarily embedded in the role itself. The objective of this article is to report on the development and testing of the Elder Image Scale (EIS) which indexes the personal identity of the elder, the mental image the caregiver has of the elder derived from past associations, present observations, and the reconciliation of the past with present impressions.

Denial of HIV/AIDS and preventive behaviour among Israeli adolescents.

A national sample of 1082 Israeli adolescents, aged 14-18, was questioned on the following topics: Respondents' sexual habits and HIV/AIDS prevention behaviours, HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and attitudes, and six kinds of HIV/AIDS-related denial. The main results showed that infrequent condom use was associated with a high level of denial, denial of personal relevance and of responsibility being the most salient. These results suggest that denial may constitute a major factor in HIV/AIDS-related risk behaviours, with implications for intervention programmes aimed at adolescents.
