Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common type of hematological cancer diagnosed in human adults; however, it has been linked with a series of chromosomal abnormalities, the most common being deletion of 13q14. This chromosomal alteration leads to the deletion of the miR-15/16 cluster, as well as downregulation of DLEU7. Deletion of miR-15a and miR-16-1 causes overexpression of BCL2, an apoptosis suppressing protein, while the deletion of DLEU7 activates the NF-kB pathway.

May 2017

Department of Urology, Faculty of Medicine, Dokuz Eylul University, Balcova, Izmir, Turkey.

Hyperlipidemia is an important risk factor for atherosclerosis and is frequently seen in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED). This study was designed to evaluate whether the acute effect of native low-density lipoprotein (nLDL) on intracavernosal pressure (ICP) is reversible and related to plasma asymmetrical dimethylarginine (ADMA), endogenous inhibition of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) levels and eNOS expression in cavernous tissues. Hyperlipidemia was induced by a single dose of intravenous 4 mg kg nLDL.

Corals at the world's southernmost coral reef of Lord Howe Island (LHI) experience large temperature and light fluctuations and need to deal with periods of cold temperature (<18°C), but few studies have investigated how corals are able to cope with these conditions. Our study characterized the response of key photophysiological parameters, as well as photoacclimatory and photoprotective pigments (chlorophylls, xanthophylls, and β-carotene), to short-term (5-d) cold stress (~15°C; 7°C below control) in three LHI coral species hosting distinct Symbiodinium ITS2 types, and compared the coral-symbiont response to that under elevated temperature (~29°C; 7°C above control). Under cold stress, Stylophora sp.

Elevated lipoprotein(a), hypertension and renal insufficiency as predictors of coronary artery disease in patients with genetically confirmed heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.

Int J Cardiol

December 2015

School of Medicine and Pharmacology, University of Western Australlia, Perth, Australia; Lipid Disorders Clinic, Cardiometabolic Service, Royal Perth Hospital, Perth, Australia. Electronic address:

Background: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is characterized by elevated LDL-cholesterol and increased risk of premature coronary artery disease (CAD). Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] increases CAD in FH, although the independence of this association relative to other CAD risk factors remains unclear. In this study, we examined the association between Lp(a) and other cardiovascular risk factors and prevalent CAD in patients with FH.

Although caregiving has been studied extensively, most studies have focused on the activities performed by caregivers, problems encountered and caregivers' reactions. Less attention has been paid to measuring historical and interpersonal factors that may shape the situation and affect outcomes, but are not necessarily embedded in the role itself. The objective of this article is to report on the development and testing of the Elder Image Scale (EIS) which indexes the personal identity of the elder, the mental image the caregiver has of the elder derived from past associations, present observations, and the reconciliation of the past with present impressions.

A national sample of 1082 Israeli adolescents, aged 14-18, was questioned on the following topics: Respondents' sexual habits and HIV/AIDS prevention behaviours, HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and attitudes, and six kinds of HIV/AIDS-related denial. The main results showed that infrequent condom use was associated with a high level of denial, denial of personal relevance and of responsibility being the most salient. These results suggest that denial may constitute a major factor in HIV/AIDS-related risk behaviours, with implications for intervention programmes aimed at adolescents.
