Bariatric and metabolic surgery during COVID-19 outbreak phase 2 in Italy: why, when and how to restart.

Surg Obes Relat Dis

October 2020

Division of General Surgery & Bariatric Center of Excellence IFSO EC, Department of Medico-Surgical Sciences and Biothecnologies, Sapienza University of Rome, Latina, Italy. Electronic address:

In Italy elective bariatric and metabolic surgery was cancelled on February 21,2020 at the beginning of the so-called phase 1 of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. Gradually it was restarted on May 4,2020 at the beginning of the so-called phase 2, when epidemiological data showed containment of the infection. Before the outbreak in eight high-volume bariatric centers 840 patients were surgically treated developing a Covid-19 infection, during phase 1, in only 5 cases (0.

Gross primary productivity (GPP), the gross uptake of carbon dioxide (CO) by plant photosynthesis, is the primary driver of the land carbon sink, which presently removes around one quarter of the anthropogenic CO emissions each year. GPP, however, cannot be measured directly and the resulting uncertainty undermines our ability to project the magnitude of the future land carbon sink. Carbonyl sulfide (COS) has been proposed as an independent proxy for GPP as it diffuses into leaves in a fashion very similar to CO, but in contrast to the latter is generally not emitted.

  • - The study aimed to discover how ultrarare gene variants related to mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) contribute to sporadic focal epilepsies (FE) using genetic data from 121 Italian FE cases and 512 controls.
  • - Researchers identified a greater prevalence of eight significant ultrarare variants in the FE patients compared to the controls, indicating a genetic link to mTOR pathway genes.
  • - The findings suggest that ultrarare variants in genes associated with the mTOR complexes could play a role in sporadic FE, highlighting the potential for personalized treatment approaches based on genetic causes.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a major cause of liver damage and has a strong genetic component. The rs4841132 G>A variant, modulating the expression of protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 3B (), which is involved in glycogen synthesis, has been reported to reduce the risk of NAFLD but at the same time may favor liver disease by facilitating glycogen accumulation. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of rs4841132 on development of histologic steatosis and fibrosis in 1,388 European individuals in a liver biopsy cohort, on NAFLD hepatocellular carcinoma in a cross-sectional Italian cohort (n = 132 cases), and on liver disease at the population level in the United Kingdom Biobank cohort.

The choice of the best sampling strategy to capture mean values of functional traits for a species/population, while maintaining information about traits' variability and minimizing the sampling size and effort, is an open issue in functional trait ecology. Intraspecific variability (ITV) of functional traits strongly influences sampling size and effort. However, while adequate information is available about intraspecific variability between individuals (ITV) and among populations (ITV), relatively few studies have analyzed intraspecific variability within individuals (ITV).

The study of ecosystem processes over multiple scales of space and time is often best achieved using comparable data from multiple sites. Yet, long-term ecological observatories have often developed their own data collection protocols. Here, we address this problem by proposing a set of ecological protocols suitable for widespread adoption by the ecological community.

To limit nitrogen (N) losses from the soil, it has been suggested to provide urea to crops in conjunction with the urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT). However, recent studies reported that NBPT affects urea uptake and urease activity in plants. To shed light on these latter aspects, the effects of NBPT were studied analysing transcriptomic and metabolic changes occurring in urea-fed maize seedlings after a short-term exposure to the inhibitor.
