Microplastics (MPs) are in some ways the expected product of man-made plastics that are considered as a pollutant ubiquitous in the environment. This is particularly notorious in continental waters, along coastlines, and especially in the North Pacific Gyre, sometimes called the Pacific Garbage Patch. Even now, there is growing concern that MPs can harm wildlife, enter the food chain, and end up in the human body.

Immunohistochemical (IHC) tissue profiling is a standard practice in the management of metastatic breast cancer (mBC), that enables the identification of distinct biological phenotypes based on hormone receptors' expression. Luminal-like tumors primarily benefit from a first line treatment strategy combining endocrine therapy and cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors. However, IHC analyses necessitate invasive procedures and may encounter technical and interpretational challenges.

Unlabelled: The objective of this study is to evaluate whether early hypoglycemia is an independent risk factor for 2-year cognitive (COG) impairment in small for gestational age (SGA) preterm infants with gestational age (GA) < 32 weeks. We retrospectively reviewed data of 1364 preterm infants with a GA 24-31 weeks. Infants were classified based on blood glucose concentrations within the first 6 h of life (HOL) as < or ≥ 40 mg/dL (Glyc < 40 and Glyc ≥ 40, respectively) and subsequently by birth weight z-score as SGA or appropriate for gestational age (AGA).

Grapevine Pinot gris virus (GPGV) is an emerging grapevine virus associated with grapevine leaf mottling and deformation (GLMD) disease. Being a recently identified virus, the molecular biology, pathological properties, and etiological complexity of GPGV remain poorly studied. Previous research revealed that GPGV comprises genetically different variants, some encoding a larger movement protein (MP) and others a shorter MP due to a C/T polymorphic site in ORF2 encoding MP.

Introduction: Considering the elevated cancer mortality in individuals with psychiatric conditions, possibly associated with late diagnosis, this study investigated cancer screening participation rates among patients under the care of four Trieste community mental health centers (CMHCs).
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study on 1252 individuals with psychiatric disorders, retrieving their electronic health records up to December 2019. The study assessed participation rates in breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening programs.

Background: The use of FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 () as a crucial target for kinase inhibitors is well established, but its association with immune infiltration remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between mutations and immune checkpoint molecules (ICMs) in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
Methods: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) databases were used to identify the ICMs associated with mutations.

This study aimed to identify the clinico-pathological variables predictive of radiologic complete response (rCR) to first-line anti-HER2 therapy in patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer. Patients were selected from the database of the GIM14 study and classified according to the best radiologic response obtained to first-line anti-HER2 therapy and upon time-to-treatment-discontinuation (TTD). A total of 545 patients were included in the analysis.

: Endometrial cancer is currently the sixth most frequent cancer in women, and scientific research is focusing on the search for particular features of the endometrium that may explain a further predisposition to the onset of endometrial cancer, aimed at improving knowledge of the pathogenetic factors of this disease. The aim of our review is to analyze in detail the results of the literature on the endometrial microbiota in patients with endometrial cancer and to investigate its role. : We performed our research on the Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases.

Although rare in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), BRAF mutations present considerable therapeutic challenges. While the use of BRAF and MEK inhibitor combinations has significantly improved survival outcomes in patients with BRAF V600E mutations, no targeted therapies are currently available for class II and III mutations, leaving the optimal treatment strategy and prognosis for these patients uncertain. Additionally, despite immunotherapy typically showing limited benefit in patients with other activating genomic alterations, it appears to deliver comparable efficacy in BRAF-mutated NSCLC, emerging as a potentially viable treatment option, particularly in patients with a history of smoking.

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive primary tumor of the Central Nervous System (CNS) with a low survival rate. The malignancy of GBM is sustained by a bidirectional crosstalk between tumor cells and the Tumor Microenvironment (TME). This mechanism of intercellular communication is mediated, at least in part, by the release of exosomes.

The extent of biosynthesis of non-essential fatty acids (FAs) and the endogenous biosynthesis of long chain polyunsaturated FAs in human fetuses remains largely unknown. We used natural variations in the C:C (δ C) of plasma phospholipids of the woman at delivery and of cord blood to infer fetal biosynthesis of FAs. We studied 39 mother-fetus pairs with uncomplicated pregnancies and term delivery.

Objectives: To assess through an indirect treatment comparison (ITC) the potential benefit of faricimab over the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) real-life scenario, hereby defined standard of care (SoC), in Italy, that is, aflibercept, bevacizumab, and ranibizumab, in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) naïve to any anti-VEGF treatment.
Methods: Individual patient-level data from the phase III clinical trials TENAYA and LUCERNE (faricimab cohort) and the real-world study RADIANCE (RADIANCE cohort) were used. Efficacy was evaluated with changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central subfield thickness (CST) from baseline to 1 year (week 52 in the RADIANCE and week 48 in the faricimab cohorts, respectively).

The Indo-European languages are among the most widely spoken in the world, yet their early diversification remains contentious. It is widely accepted that the spread of this language family across Europe from the 5th millennium BP correlates with the expansion and diversification of steppe-related genetic ancestry from the onset of the Bronze Age. However, multiple steppe-derived populations co-existed in Europe during this period, and it remains unclear how these populations diverged and which provided the demographic channels for the ancestral forms of the Italic, Celtic, Greek, and Armenian languages.

Aims: To understand the role of simulation in ensuring the development of the competencies expected by newly graduated register nurses (NGRNs) from the work initiation up to 5 months of transition.
Methods: Mixed-method study design. A longitudinal phase employing the Nurse Competence Scale (NCS, from 0 to 100, excellent) to assess the perceived competencies among NGRNs (N = 151) at three time points (first day of work up to fifth month); followed by a qualitative phase involving four focus groups of preceptors (N = 16) to explore the potential role of simulation in the NGRNs' working transition.

The knowledge of pericardial diseases has now improved, including prospective and retrospective cohort studies focusing on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. The complex interplay between genetic predisposition (especially for autoinflammatory conditions), inflammation, and autoimmunity is now known to trigger recurrences of pericarditis. Moreover, diagnostic capabilities have improved with the implementation of multimodality imaging, particularly cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), to detect and monitor pericardial inflammation, to allow diagnosis in more complicated cases, and tailor the duration of therapy based on objective parameters.
