The Saimaa ringed seal () is endemic to Lake Saimaa in Finland. The subspecies is thought to have originated when parts of the ringed seal population of the Baltic region were trapped in lakes emerging due to postglacial bedrock rebound around 9000 years ago. During the 20th century, the population experienced a drastic human-induced bottleneck.

In heterogeneous landscapes, resource selection constitutes a crucial link between landscape and population-level processes such as density. We conducted a non-invasive genetic study of white-tailed deer in southern Finland in 2016 and 2017 using fecal DNA samples to understand factors influencing white-tailed deer density and space use in late summer prior to the hunting season. We estimated deer density as a function of landcover types using a spatial capture-recapture (SCR) model with individual identities established using microsatellite markers.

Background Substantial differences exist between different guideline-recommended pretest probability (PTP) models for the detection of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). This study was performed to study the performance of the 2021 American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) guideline-recommended PTP (AHA/ACC-PTP) model in assessing the likelihood of obstructive CAD compared with previously proposed models. Methods and Results Symptomatic patients (N=50 561) referred for coronary computed tomography angiography were included.

Herpes simplex viruses (HSV) are common human pathogens with a combined global seroprevalence of 90% in the adult population. HSV-1 causes orofacial herpes but can cause severe diseases, such as the potentially fatal herpes encephalitis and herpes keratitis, a prevalent cause of infectious blindness. The hallmark of HSV is lifelong latent infections and viral reactivations, leading to recurrent lesions or asymptomatic shedding.

In Finland, the distribution area of the taiga tick, (Schulze, 1930), is nested within a broader area of distribution of a congeneric species, the sheep tick, (Linnaeus, 1758) (Acari: Ixodidae). We assess whether distinct environmental adaptations or dispersal history provides a more parsimonious explanation for the differences in the distributions of the two common and medically important ixodids in Finland. We used an innovative spatially constrained randomization procedure to analyze whether crowdsourced occurrence data points of the two tick species had statistically different associations with any of the 28 environmental variables.

Background: With advancing age, physical capacity gradually decreases which may lead to decreased work ability, if the physical work requirements remain the same. Examination of the importance of physical fitness for work ability among aging workers will help to find potential strategies to promote work ability in old age. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between physical fitness and work ability among aging workers.

We compared a point-of-care HemoScreen hematology analyzer to an automated Sysmex XN analyzer for complete blood count (CBC) and white blood cell (WBC) differential, and evaluated its capacity to detect leukocyte abnormalities. A total of 100 K2-EDTA whole blood samples, median age 56 years (2 months to 92 years), were compared. For CBC and WBC differential we compared 74 samples with no confirmed abnormal leukocytes.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer survivors, specifically those who had childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), face higher risks of non-communicable diseases and ongoing inflammation, prompting a study on their inflammatory protein profiles.
  • A comparison of 21 ALL survivors aged 16-30 with age- and sex-matched healthy controls revealed that protein levels did not differ significantly at baseline, but an exercise intervention led to reduced inflammatory markers in survivors.
  • The findings suggest that physical exercise can be beneficial and should be encouraged for childhood cancer survivors to help mitigate their health risks.

Large areas of forests are annually damaged or destroyed by outbreaking insect pests. Understanding the factors that trigger and terminate such population eruptions has become crucially important, as plants, plant-feeding insects, and their natural enemies may respond differentially to the ongoing changes in the global climate. In northernmost Europe, climate-driven range expansions of the geometrid moths and have resulted in overlapping and increasingly severe outbreaks.

Current theory predicts that the intensity of biotic interactions, particularly herbivory, decreases with increasing latitude and elevation. However, recent studies have revealed substantial variation in both the latitudinal and elevational patterns of herbivory. This variation is often attributed to differences in study design and the type of data collected by different researchers.

Urinary extracellular vesicles (uEVs) are enriched with glycosylated proteins which have been extensively studied as putative biomarkers of urological cancers. Here, we characterized the glycosylation and integrin profile of EVs derived from urological cancer cell lines. We used fluorescent europium-doped nanoparticles coated with lectins and antibodies to identify a biomarker combination consisting of integrin subunit alpha 3 (ITGA3) and fucose.

Background: Road traffic crashes (RTCs) are a global public health burden whose resulting morbidity and mortality disproportionately impact low- and middle-income countries with stressed health systems. There is a paucity of published studies that evaluate the sociodemographic distribution of RTCs using nationally representative samples from the African region.

Aim: To examine population-wide associations between sociodemographic factors and involvement in RTCs in Kenya.

The aim was to evaluate the herpes simplex virus (HSV) seroprevalence and seroconversion among 285 pregnant women and their 120 male spouses in Finland during a six-year follow-up (FU) between 1998-2008. We also studied the effect of sexual habits, pregnancy, and other demographic factors on the acquisition of HSV infection. Combined HSV-1 and HSV-2-IgG antibodies were assessed in the first baseline serum samples with an indirect enzyme immunoassay method.

J Marriage Fam

February 2022

Departamento de Economía Universidad de Alcalá Alcalá de Henares Spain.

Objective: This study investigates whether and how fatherhood shapes the wage distribution in Britain, Finland, and Germany.

Background: Existing research debates whether fatherhood is associated with greater wages. However, it remains unclear whether the association between fatherhood and wages varies along the wage distribution as well as institutional contexts.

The impact of fitness landscape features on evolutionary outcomes has attracted considerable interest in recent decades. However, evolution often occurs under time-dependent selection in so-called fitness seascapes where the landscape is under flux. Fitness seascapes are an inherent feature of natural environments, where the landscape changes owing both to the intrinsic fitness consequences of previous adaptations and extrinsic changes in selected traits caused by new environments.

Photosystems I and II (PSI and PSII) are the integral components of the photosynthetic electron transport chain that utilize light to provide chemical energy for CO fixation. In this study, we investigated how the deficiency of PSII affects the gene expression, accumulation, and organization of thylakoid protein complexes as well as physiological characteristics of sp. PCC 6803 by combining biochemical, biophysical, and transcriptomic approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how blood pressure during different life stages (childhood, young-adulthood, and mid-adulthood) influences large artery stiffness in mid-adulthood.
  • Blood pressure measurements were taken from 1869 participants across these stages, and results showed that a cumulative increase in systolic blood pressure was linked to greater artery stiffness, with mid-adulthood pressure being the most significant factor.
  • The findings suggest that maintaining healthy blood pressure levels at all life stages, especially mid-adulthood, could help mitigate the risks associated with arterial stiffness.

Article Synopsis
  • * Research involving citizen scientists revealed that increased impervious surfaces (like concrete) around pedunculate oaks led to a decrease in insect damage, while more forest cover increased herbivory from chewing insects.
  • * Local canopy cover can mitigate the negative effects of impervious surfaces on certain herbivores, indicating that urban habitat characteristics play a crucial role in shaping plant-insect interactions.
