Cyclic dimeric GMP (c-di-GMP) is a widespread bacterial second messenger that controls a variety of cellular functions, including protein and polysaccharide secretion, motility, cell division, cell development, and biofilm formation, and contributes to the virulence of some important bacterial pathogens. While the genes for diguanylate cyclases and c-di-GMP hydrolases (active or mutated) can be easily identified in microbial genomes, the list of c-di-GMP receptor domains is quite limited, and only two of them, PliZ and MshEN, are found across multiple bacterial phyla. Recently, a new c-di-GMP receptor protein, named CdgR or ComFB, has been identified in cyanobacteria and shown to regulate their cell size and, more recently, natural competence.

It is shown that the exchange repulsion energy, E, can be rationalized by partitioning the respective energy expression for two systems with Hartree-Fock orbitals into physically meaningful contributions. A division of E into a positive kinetic and a negative potential part is possible, but these contributions correlate only poorly with the actual exchange repulsion energy. A more meaningful partitioning is derived, where all kinetic energy contributions are collected in a term that vanishes for exact Hartree-Fock orbitals due to their stationarity conditions.

Background And Objectives: Patients with rare diseases like hereditary angioedema (HAE) are usually referred to an angioedema center to ensure guideline-compliant and experience-based therapy. Even though there are established guidelines and several approved therapeutics, there are still open questions and situations in the daily care of HAE patients, where an exchange between centers is needed.
Materials And Methods: A survey was conducted among physicians from German angioedema centers regarding challenges and issues in everyday HAE treatment.

Technological innovation has been crucial in the evolution of our lineage, with tool use and production linked to complex cognitive processes. While previous research has examined the cognitive demands of early stone toolmaking, the neurocognitive aspects of early hominin tool use remain largely underexplored. This study relies on electroencephalography to investigate brain activation patterns associated with two distinct early hominin tool-using behaviors: forceful hammerstone percussion, practiced by both humans and non-human primates and linked to the earliest proposed stone tool industries, and precise flake cutting, an exclusive hominin behavior typically associated with the Oldowan.

Lassa fever (LF) virus (LASV) is endemic in Sierra Leone (SL) and poses a significant public health threat to the region; however, no risk factors for clinical LF have been reported in SL. The objective of this study was to identify the risk factors for clinical LF in an endemic community in SL. Most neural prosthetic devices are based on electrical stimulation, although the modulation of neuronal activity by a localized chemical delivery would better mimic physiological synaptic machinery. In the past decade, various drug delivery approaches attempted to emulate synaptic transmission, although they were hampered by poor retention of their cargo while reaching the target destination, low spatial resolution, and poor biocompatibility and stability of the materials involved. Here, we propose a planar solid-state device for multisite neurotransmitter translocation at the nanoscale consisting of a nanopatterned ceramic membrane connected to a reservoir designed to store neurotransmitters.

Disease-modifying therapies for Alzheimer's disease (AD) are likely to be most beneficial when initiated in the presymptomatic phase. To track the benefit of such interventions, fluid biomarkers are of great importance, with neurofilament light chain protein (NfL) showing promise for monitoring neurodegeneration and predicting cognitive outcomes. Here, we update and complement previous findings from the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network Observational Study by using matched cross-sectional and longitudinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma samples from 567 individuals, allowing timely comparative analyses of CSF and blood trajectories across the entire disease spectrum.

Ischemic stroke consists of rapid neural death as a consequence of brain vessel obstruction, followed by damage to the neighboring tissue known as ischemic penumbra. The cerebral tissue in the core of the lesions becomes irreversibly damaged, however, the ischemic penumbra is potentially recoverable during the initial phases after the stroke. Therefore, there is real need for emerging therapeutic strategies to reduce ischemic damage and its spread to the penumbral region.
