Cyclic dimeric GMP (c-di-GMP) is a widespread bacterial second messenger that controls a variety of cellular functions, including protein and polysaccharide secretion, motility, cell division, cell development, and biofilm formation, and contributes to the virulence of some important bacterial pathogens. While the genes for diguanylate cyclases and c-di-GMP hydrolases (active or mutated) can be easily identified in microbial genomes, the list of c-di-GMP receptor domains is quite limited, and only two of them, PliZ and MshEN, are found across multiple bacterial phyla. Recently, a new c-di-GMP receptor protein, named CdgR or ComFB, has been identified in cyanobacteria and shown to regulate their cell size and, more recently, natural competence.

What is the Exchange Repulsion Energy? Insight by Partitioning into Physically Meaningful Contributions.

It is shown that the exchange repulsion energy, E, can be rationalized by partitioning the respective energy expression for two systems with Hartree-Fock orbitals into physically meaningful contributions. A division of E into a positive kinetic and a negative potential part is possible, but these contributions correlate only poorly with the actual exchange repulsion energy. A more meaningful partitioning is derived, where all kinetic energy contributions are collected in a term that vanishes for exact Hartree-Fock orbitals due to their stationarity conditions.

Lassa fever (LF) virus (LASV) is endemic in Sierra Leone (SL) and poses a significant public health threat to the region; however, no risk factors for clinical LF have been reported in SL. Most neural prosthetic devices are based on electrical stimulation, although the modulation of neuronal activity by a localized chemical delivery would better mimic physiological synaptic machinery. To track the benefit of such interventions, fluid biomarkers are of great importance, with neurofilament light chain protein (NfL) showing promise for monitoring neurodegeneration and predicting cognitive outcomes. Ischemic stroke consists of rapid neural death as a consequence of brain vessel obstruction, followed by damage to the neighboring tissue known as ischemic penumbra. The cerebral tissue in the core of the lesions becomes irreversibly damaged, however, the ischemic penumbra is potentially recoverable during the initial phases after the stroke. Therefore, there is real need for emerging therapeutic strategies to reduce ischemic damage and its spread to the penumbral region.
