We assessed the cross-cultural role of Time Perspective (TP) tendencies [Past Positive (PP), Past Negative (PN), Present Hedonistic (PH), Present Fatalistic (PF), and Future (F)], the Deviation from a Balanced Time Perspective (DBTP) profile, the Deviation from a Negative Time Perspective (DNTP) profile, and mindfulness on life satisfaction (LS). The sample consisted of psychology undergraduate students (N= 867, M= 20.19, = 3.

Aim: This study aimed to examine the association of knowledge and self-efficacy as variables for behavior related to dental consultations among patients with type 2 diabetes, depending on the diagnosis of periodontal disease at a general hospital in Japan.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 198 patients with type 2 diabetes (mean age: 66.1 ± 10.

Background: Recently, attempts have been made to use the pulse rate variability (PRV) as a surrogate for heart rate variability (HRV). PRV, however, may be caused by the fluctuations of left ventricular pre-ejection period and pulse transit time besides HRV. We examined whether PRV differs not only from HRV but also depending on the measurement site.

One plausible reason for this is the possible deficiency of food allergy education during the training courses for registered dietitians. This time, we will investigate the actual situations of food allergy education practiced in the training courses of registered dietitians, and reveal the point at issue.

Biliary tract carcinoma (BTC) is a lethal malignancy. This lethality is essentially attributed to both slow carcinogenesis occurring under complex pathological circumstances and to the asymptomatic growth of BTC infiltrating the surrounding structures by varying routes. The disease is therefore usually detected at an advanced stage with a high frequency of distant organ metastasis.

Current studies have demonstrated that exercise increases regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), an index of neuronal activity. However, neuronal regulation of the increased rCBF in the brain parenchyma is poorly understood. We developed a running model with rats for monitoring hippocampal cerebral blood flow (Hip-CBF) and found that mild treadmill running increases Hip-CBF in a tetrodotoxin-dependent manner, suggesting that functional hyperemia, an increase in rCBF in response to neuronal activation, occurs in the running rat's hippocampus (Nishijima T and Soya H.

The advantages of triple-site ventricular pacing (Tri-V) compared to conventional biventricular site pacing (Bi-V) have been reported. We sought to identify the predictors of acute hemodynamic Tri-V responders. Acute hemodynamic studies were performed in 32 patients with advanced heart failure during Tri-V implantation.

A critical issue in adenovirus (Ad)-based cancer gene therapy is to improve the specificity of gene delivery to cancer cells for better efficacy and safety. We explored methods of retargeting Ad vectors for selective gene therapy of human biliary cancers using the Ad incorporating an IgG Fc-binding motif (Z33) from the Staphylococcus protein A (Ad-FZ33) combined with tumor-specific antibodies. Flow cytometry analysis revealed high-expression levels of epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on human biliary cancer cells.

Brain glycogen could be a critical energy source for brain activity when the glucose supply from the blood is inadequate (hypoglycaemia). Although untested, it is hypothesized that during prolonged exhaustive exercise that induces hypoglycaemia and muscular glycogen depletion, the resultant hypoglycaemia may cause a decrease in brain glycogen. Here,we tested this hypothesis and also investigated the possible involvement of brain monoamines with the reduced levels of brain glycogen.

Introduction: An increased left atrial (LA) stiffness reflects the structural remodeling and deterioration of the LA function. This study was designed to estimate LA stiffness by measuring a combination of the strain and LA pressure in patients undergoing pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) of atrial fibrillation (AF) and to evaluate the influence of the LA stiffness on the cardiac function, serum markers, and recurrence of AF after PVI.
Methods: In 155 consecutive patients with AF, the brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and aminoterminal procollagen type III propeptide (PIIIP) plasma levels were measured before the PVI.

Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is rising in clinical importance due to the increasing incidence worldwide, poor prognosis, and suboptimal response to therapies. New effective therapeutic approaches are needed for improvement of treatment outcome. A recent study showed that sorafenib, a multikinase inhibitor that acts predominantly through inhibition of Raf kinase and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptors, exhibited potent antitumor activity in a preclinical model of cholangiocarcinoma cells.

Purpose: The present retrospective study assessed the role of proton beam therapy (PBT) in the treatment of patients with Stage II or III non-small-cell lung cancer who were inoperable or ineligible for chemotherapy because of co-existing disease or refusal.
Patients And Methods: Between November 2001 and July 2008, PBT was given to 35 patients (5 patients with Stage II, 12 with Stage IIIA, and 18 with Stage IIIB) whose median age was 70.3 years (range, 47.

This paper examines how the Hippocratic corpus was passed on during the Enlightenment of modern Greece, introducing part of the latest Greek research on the history of medicine. Although classical studies at large had stagnated at the time under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, with the movement toward independence in the second half of the 18th century the Greeks raised their consciousness of the fact that they were the successors to their ancestral great achievements. From that time classical studies, including the history of medicine, had been activated.

In patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF), an extensive antiarrhythmic drug (AAD) therapy using class III AADs and class I AADs might be more effective in restoring sinus rhythm than class I or III AADs alone. However, the significance and efficacy of this treatment before radiofrequency catheter ablation is unclear. The present study included 51 consecutive patients with long-lasting persistent AF (>12 months) in whom > or =2 previous AADs had failed to restore sinus rhythm (SR).

Noninvasive identification of nonculprit lesions could improve preventive strategies for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We assessed the morphology, composition, and spatial distribution of nonculprit coronary plaques in patients with AMI using computed tomographic angiography (CTA). A total of 64 patients with AMI underwent 64-slice CTA within 2 weeks after admission, and 162 symptomatic patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP) underwent CTA and stress myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI).

A growing number of human studies have reported the beneficial influences of acute as well as chronic exercise on cognitive functions. However, neuroimaging investigations into the neural substrates of the effects of acute exercise have yet to be performed. Using multichannel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), we sought cortical activation related to changes in the Stroop interference test, elicited by an acute bout of moderate exercise, in healthy volunteers (N=20).

Today, approximately 80% of men with metastatic testicular cancer can be cured with chemotherapy combined with the appropriate surgery. The improved treatment outcome has led to the stratification of patients with metastatic disease by the consensus prognostic index; the International Germ Cell Cancer Consensus Group classification. Currently, the first-line chemotherapy with bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (BEP) remains the standard management of metastatic testicular cancer.

Targeting cytotoxins or immunotoxins to tumor cell surface receptors represents a new approach for the treatment of cancers. We tested the antitumor activity of a cytotoxin (IL-4-PE) composed of an interleukin-4 (IL-4) targeting moiety and a truncated form of Pseudomonas exotoxin A against human biliary tract carcinoma (BTC). Immunohistochemical analysis showed that cultured BTC cell lines and cancerous epithelia in BTC tissue (e.
